To each their own for sure, and I thought the Air was great when I had it, for so many reasons. But this is ultimately why I returned the Air - my device is also a tool, and I need it to be more utilitarian than what the Air provided for me (though it coverered probably 70% of it for me). I don't like the idea of having to think about bringing anything else with me to accomplish what a single phone could accomplish with another model. Not a criticism of your situation - as the Air was truly an incredible piece of tech and enjoyable to hold and use.

I think there is a spectrum of types of people in the world, some attracted to beauty and some attracted to pragmatics, and all variations in between. Those that lean towards the pragmatic side just can't wrap their brains around why anybody would choose beauty at the cost of pragmatism, and vice versa on the beauty side... hence some of the pretty defensive posts around this phone. Personally I fall somewhere in the middle with phones and technology. But when I'm on the fence, I always end up landing on the more pragmatic side, for better or worse!
I would add to your spectrum of people, the ones that value weight and pocket-ability without sacrificing things that important to them like screen size, good battery life, Promotion, etc. The Air is such a pleasure to use carry around having used the 16 Pro and the 15 Pro prior to that. That weight, combined with the thinness, makes it much more hand holdable for extended periods of time. So while I find this phone to be beautiful, it's not the main reason I love it so much.

Why wouldn’t you come back to the BEST once you’ve used it ……anyway all these people touting the Ultra Wide if they didn’t have it for a month they wouldn’t even know it existed, is really not that big of a deal and certainly not worth 98% better features you got with the Air lol……. anyway, Apple still hasn’t gotten anywhere close to the N series Nokia …that’s the phones that have the cameras, I had them and they were way way ahead of their time.
If you go back and read threads when 12 Mini was introduced, people complained about the ultra-wide lens. They said a telephoto lens would have been better because ultra-wide is useless. Now, it is important all of a sudden. People will never be satisfied. To most, it's FOMO.

100% agree. I think if you took a survey of Air owners a much higher percentage would be in the same camp. I think most people purchase the air more for the lighter weight and usability improvements as opposed to it being the better looking device. That's why I laugh when I see people saying the Air is form over function. The primary function of a mobile device is mobility. Improving the usability improves its core functionality. If anything, the air is function over features.

After long internal fight gonna order iphone air… only thing i will miss is wide angle camera (quite often i do make pictures of various texts and macro is really important), but the weight and feel of air is so tempting… but, what freaking colour should i buy?! Decissions…

Is this on a Pro phone? Because the Air camera focuses much closer than the main camera of the Pro.

but, what freaking colour should i buy?! Decissions…
Light Gold. It’s too subtle to be garish. Instead it looks very special. The polished titanium edges are amazing in this colour.

Sky Blue looked better on the Apple website than in my hand, where the sides weren’t as shiny and the back seemed a little cheap or plasticky-looking (not feeling).

Space Black is heavy and unsuited to the Air in my opinion.

Cloud White … definitely an option but a bit boring. Sky Blue and Light Gold are more interesting “whites”.

Cloud white only choice imo , timeless classic colour , personally I’m not into the muted of blue and gold and black I like a lot but overtime will not age well.

no way i could. the screen is too small.

17 Pro Max Ultra is the answer for you.

I have had two 17 Pro models and returned them both, they just don't feel like the future or offer anything new that the 15/16 pro didn't already.

The Air is just amazing to hold, it is the best iPhone since the iPhone X and hopefully next year it gets even better.

The only people moaning about the air are those who only buy the pro because they feel insecure about themselves.

Or those that need a .5 wouldn't buy a iPhone with out it.

You clearly don't need the best features on an iPhone and thats absolutely fine, a lot of people don't. The Air isn't the best iPhone since the X in terms of features, its simply a slimmed down iPhone (literally) and it feels nice to hold. It is a feature stripped iPhone though and people are questioning its pricepoint and place in the line up, legitimately I'd say.

This is an enthusiast site and I've witnessed many years of anything under the Pro models being scrutinised for lacking features and now we've got an iPhone that offers less than the mainstream standard iPhone and costs £200 more. I think its reasonable to question that and to understand why the consumer hasn't embraced it as much as expected by some.

People don’t complain about high end sports cars not having adequate storage space. But most people also buy traditional vehicles instead. Doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for the high end ones however…

The iPhone Air is an EXPERIENCE. And to me personally, one that is in fact worth an extra $200 over the base 17. Especially since the Air has a more powerful (and efficient) chip, 50% more RAM, the fastest storage of ANY 256GB iPhone, all on top of this absolutely ****ing gorgeous design that I personally consider to also be the best overall size of a phone as well.

As an enthusiast I absolutely love it. But even as a general consumer I think I would as well. Because most people don’t use the other camera lenses OR listen to audio/video with their phone speakers. And those are the only two real cons with the Air.

The general public is right to question whether the value is there or not, and if they REALLY need an ultra-wide lens or dual speakers the base 17 is the better option. But I think there’s enough of a difference outside of just being thinner and lighter that makes the Air an enticing option as well (namely the Goldilocks sized display and near Pro level performance that SOMEHOW genuinely lasts a full day in most use cases).

I might be ready to go to the 17 Pro. While I really like about the Air is how thin/light it is, plus the bigger display than the 17 Pro. When you hold it, you marvel about how Apple was able to design/engineer the Air. However, I do miss the Pro Cameras. There are little things that pop up over the month of using it that could cause me to get the Pro.

-If you shop at a store that has scan/pay, the scan is not always able to scan the product codes. This never happened with my Pros. Small inconvenience, but an annoying one that wastes time, by having to type in the UPC code.

-Battery life is worse than my 16 Pro when using the Air for calls/Teams meetings and in places where cellular signal is 1 or 2 bars. While not worse by a lot, it is noticeable. I know, I can get the battery back for the Air, but that totally defeats the purpose and don’t want to carry that around.

There are some other minor drawbacks. If Apple would have just put a normal camera on this it would be a winner. Maybe next year and who knows I may still keep it and just live with the drawbacks.

That's odd. You shouldn't need macro/ultra wide to scan a code. You tried zooming in (cropping), I assume?

What do you mean "normal"?

Having handled the Air to see what the fuss was about, I fail to understand what the ‘experience’ is tbh. It’s a thin iPhone and that’s about all I got from it. The pro chip throttles due to poor heat dissipation on the tests I have seen, so the advantage is largely lost. It’s a thin SE and if the thin aspect is the experience you are referring to, that’s subjective as to whether that’s a bonus or not. Once the phone is put in a case, it thickens and hides much of the thinness anyway. You think that’s worth £200 more? Not sure what the ‘high end sports car’ reference is about? The Pro is the high end option, followed by the standard 17.

People are buying the Pro and standard models in higher numbers because features are the selling points in what is now a very mature market. People have expectations as to what a phone needs to do. The Air is feature stripped and riding off its thin claim, and not very well by all accounts.

I personally do not want my main device to be made from aluminum, due to how soft and dent/scratch prone it is, particularly as a caseless phone user. So that automatically writes off the rest of this year's lineup for me. The Air is for those who are tired of phones getting bigger and heavier, but also want the premium build quality and materials Apple is known for, that are not found in the base model or Pro.

Just because YOU don't like it or see the vision, doesn't mean everybody else has to feel that way. And sales alone do not determine whether a product is a worthwhile purchase or not. The sense of joy and wonder I feel every single time I pick up the Air is something I personally haven't experienced since the X all the way back in 2017. That, to me, is worth $999. But it's clearly not to you. And that's fine. Let us have our joy, and go enjoy your own phone vs trying to make us feel less than for going with the one we prefer...

What on earth are you doing for these tests to apply to you? What are you doing when you’re being ‘throttled?’ Or are you just spouting off weird brochure specs YouTubers have pointed out for their edge cases?

An SE has traditionally had outdated hardware. Air has the same processor and ram as the Pro. Weird comparison.

There's genuinely NO reasoning with the anti-Air crowd, so save your breath. They made their decision about it before the device was even a reality...

so I have the air and the main reason is it’s something new fresh and love the looks and has imo best size screen . I came from a 15 pro max and I love the air , camera is fantastic the battery life is better than I thought more than enough.
I would not say the camera is fantastic, since it is missing the Macro Mode and Ultra Wide. I think the normal pictures are slightly better on my wife’s 17 Pro max and the Pro also focuses faster. The camera is definitely very good though, but not fantastic compared to the Pro’s. Definitely acceptable in most situations. 🙂
