Lol dude...why take such offense? If someone doesnt like it and calls it a downgrade...so what? Its just an ipad

I'm not taking offense. I am simply stating a counter point, so when other people with iPad 4s ask the question? "Should I upgrade? I mean, I read it's a downgrade" they don't get misled. Why do you assume I am taking offense? Because I am trying to be as polite as I can and asking people not to take offense at my comments?

Please help me understand how I am supposed to respond without apparently "seeming" to take offense, act like the "lord of upgrades", or any of the other slights taken to a simple statement of FACT. There's 20 other ways I could have stated this, 15 of which would have been REALLY offensive, but I opted not to.

I have a 3 and an Air. I consider myself a heavy user for work. The ipad has been great for my travel needs.

I actually can't tell any increased speeds for the apps I use. So my biggest benefits are:

1. Less weight for travel. (Which my 3 gen has never bothered me).
2. International LTE in countries I travel to a lot.

Last year I spent 6 months teaching in the Philippines. Their local SMART carrier has LTE. My AT&T 3 wouldn't connect to their LTE only 3G. The Air will connect to SMART LTE.

So my personal debate is $829 plus case worth slightly less weight and LTE internationally?

That's a lot of $ for those two features.

I have 11 more days to make up my mind.

Do some comparisons with PDFs, both importing and rendering to read. Try importing and editing images using Snapseed or Aviary, do some browsing comparisons, even a simple process like changing the wallpaper, the differences are stark, hugely apparent.

My comparisons were with an iPad 4, so you might see even more difference to your iPad 3.

Thanks for the info. I've done PDF comparisons already. I use my iPad to prepare the lessons that I teach in PDF format as well as grade students lessons in the same format. In these uses I've not seen any real speed increases using adobes reader.

As for as editing images I haven't done any of that yet. I also can't even remember the last time I actually changed my wallpaper.

$829 for a faster wallpaper change is probably not worth it to me. However the other things you mentioned could very well benefit me.

Thanks again for the info.

I keep all my PDFs in iBooks (and download new manuals from the net when needed). The difference in processing into iBooks is easily apparent, opening a PDF manual with images on the iPad 4 has a few seconds of fuzziness (for want of a better descriptor) while the page opens perfectly legible on the Air.

Tested with the same PDF files on both.

The Air is quite possibly the most perfect device ever created to date. Sure it's not THAT much of an upgrade from the four, but stop posting bullshot threads about your buyers remorse.

yeah I was really disappointed with the screen on the Air too (too bluish and hollow feeling). So I returned it in favor of my 3.

Disappointing how? It's the same screen as the iPad 3 and 4, just a bit thinner.

We bought one and it had a big pink patch in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Thankfully I opened it in store to check for such things (I've had issues with Apple's QC with my MBP), so I exchanged it immediately. The replacement had a far more uniform screen, only it had a nasty yellow tinge to it- greys appeared olive, blues appeared more green than they should etc.

We returned it and walked out of there without one. Not impressed.

Can you markup the PDFs you save in iBooks? I'll go try out the speed differences right now. Thanks or the very helpful info.

The screen is better looking than my 3, MacBook Pro, i5s, or nexus 7 2013. I guess it varies.

Not that I'm aware of, when I used to have the need, I used to use PDF Master Pro.

I use iBooks for reference manuals and magazines these days and don't need to annotate on them.

My 3 is up for sale so I still have it. When o hold the 3 and then the Air the different it's dramatic. I have noticed the speed as apps launch instantly and the games I play are very smooth. I'd definitely consider returning and staying with the 4 a downgrade. Aside from the thinness and lightness, the A7 is a major upgrade over the iPad 4.

Let me get this straight, you have an iPad 3, not an iPad 4 and because the jump from the 3 to the Air is dramatic, you're saying the jump from 4 to Air will be the same? Sorry, doesn't really work that way. The iPad 4 is noticeably faster than the iPad 3. Sure, the Air is noticeably faster than the iPad 4, too, but the difference isn't as dramatic. Heck, performance-wise, going from 3 to 4 is actually more noticeable than 4 to Air.

If weight and form factor isn't an issue, there's nothing wrong with keeping the 4 and saving the funds to get the new iPad next year.

Short answer of it is that the only benefit I'm seeing from the iPad Air is faster browser load times and WiFi speeds. It's lighter, but doesn't change anything. It's still heavy to not change my usage pattern.

Drawbacks are there - memory management really. Yes, if they upped to 2GB of RAM, I wouldn't feel like I was spending $800 on a step back.

So, I'll be getting a Retina Mini instead, at least then I get the real benefits of portability instead of feeling like I got a downgrade in some ways as well.

WoW!

Why is apple so cheap? Cheap android has 1gb ram. Entry level android has 1gb ram.

Ios7 also work like android in the sense that apps are running in the background or if im wrong? U need at least 2gb even if its not needed. Dont they ever think about future enhancement on new games and apps? U dont want to run Bloodmasgue, pause it and everythingelse refreshes.

The lighter, thinner, smaller - is good and all, but doesn't change anything about the iPad usage. It still gets heavy and still too big to shove into jackets or pants.

Speed improvements are only noticeable on Safari, then you take a step back in memory pressure and footprint.

The 64Bit aspect of A7 is completely a non-factor.

I would say the only real upgrade to this generation is WiFi and CPU speeds, but the fact that iOS 7 still lags, and you can't keep as much apps in memory... is almost a wash. The smaller and thinner is nice but not enough.

Yes, if you need a new iPad today, I would buy an iPad Air. But as an iPad 4 owner, I'm buying an iPad Mini Retina, as that would actually change my usage pattern by being able to take it with me everywhere and is a significant upgrade to the existing mini.

Why buy a iPad mini retina?
Where can you take a iPad mini that you can't take an iPad. makes no sense to me.

Loved the iPad 4, but it seems like a brick compared to the Air. Definitely keeping the Air.

Keeping your IPad an not upgrading might be a good idea

But please, please, don't feel the need to justify this by making up ridiculous arguments, that piss everyone off

Team Air :D

Well that clears it right up.
