you did not catch up with the latest news? they fork Kodi to another app called Mrmc and remove add-on/python so that it is compliant with apple policy. it is still in beta testing, and hopefully it will be the app store before Christmas.

Apple is making a big splash with ATV, and developers want to join.

So whats it going to do? Just be a media player?

Ahh. I see. So they removed functionality and renamed it.

Not sure I'd call that Kodi at that point. Plex itself is basically that.

Kodi is very different from Plex, beside both are streaming app.

Plex depends on a dedicated server to transcode. so if you have a Mac as a server, then you have to leave it on all the time. or streaming from a NAS with powerful CPU enough to transcode.

Kodi transcode on the device itself, ATV 4. it does not need a server. you can stream from any NAS.

I hate to start another thread about this, though I'm returning my 64gig Apple TV within a few days. The App Store is getting better, though I'm not seeing a reason to upgrade from my Apple TV 4 as of now.

I love my new apple tv 4, the apps and games are amazing.

I also have roku 4, roku 3, and all the old versions of apple tv.

But this new apple tv is the best I have seen so far. Playing the games you love in your iphone in a big screen is great. There are also some great apps to view live photos.

Today I returned home and used ATV4 after a 2 weeks and I'm REALLY impressed. So much great new apps like weather, webcams, games, awesome infuse and airplay is now working perfectly. I really love it and I'm very happy that I returned ATV3 (I hesitated so much). This is awesome, but you need other apple devices for maximum benefit.

did you mean that you did not use your ATV 4 for the last two weeks?

Yes, but just because I can't, I wasn't at home. And now I see a big step forward.

Wondering if this is some hack Amazon did with their app to prevent full enjoyment or just a feature of AirPlay in itself. Unwatchable unless as a last resort

iPads are 4x3 devices. All you're seeing is a mirror of that when you airdrop it. The App isn't set up to function in the 16x9 world. Its why I laugh when people say..."Just air drop it!"

With respect. What were you looking for that you did not know before you bought it?

I'm generally happy with my 32gb ATV4. Only 2 major dislikes are the new black on white interface verse the old white on black and the "missing' Amazon Prime app.

Regardless, do any of the alternatives have a hard wire ethernet input? The FireStick doesn't. My ethernet clocks 85-100Mbps with NO spooling. My previous ATVs, which also had an ethernet port, occasionally spooled to the point where I threw the towel in. I recently ran an ethernet cable to my video room and it was a huge improvement. No wifi FireSticks in my future or any other wifi only device for me.
To be fair, AC blows 100Mbit away. My AC is up to 867, I connect at 434, my 200/20 fibre gives a speediest over wifi of 205/23. AC for the Apple TV is better than the 100Mbit ethernet option on it

Are you screen mirroring Amazon Prime or using native AirPlay support? I've been using native AirPlay to stream Amazon Prime from my iPhone 6S+ to my ATV4 and the picture is the same as running the built in app on my Samsung TV. The ATV4 remote controls the playback, including Siri commands. Subtitles can be turned on/off. Really no different than if I had accessed the video via a native app -- currently on episode 7 of The Man in High Castle :)

Pretty sure a pirated content centric app is going to always be sideload only.

And yet Plex, a prior fork of XBMC (Back before it was Kodi), which can be extended by channels, some of them pirated, gets a free pass? I suppose the difference is its the server that is streaming the content to ATV client, rather than ATV app itself do the work, but that would be semantics, really.

I mean its trivial to repackage a downloaded MKV to an MP4 and put it into itunes and then use Homesharing. Is Apple now facilitating piracy? Not to mention MP3s on the audio side, no work involved at all.

Kind of a double standard no?

Maybe a different perspective here: having used the atv3 since it came out, we have it setup for Plex using plexconnect and it generally provides the familty with a simple movie/tv show viewing experience. I was eager to get the atv4 wanting to eliminate plexconnect. So far my experience with the atv4 has been luke warm. Yes we can still do the same things and a few more but the plex app is no where sophisticated as pleconnect. Guess I can get use to the new remote but it's the harmony remote we use and while that basically works with the atv4 it appears the plex app has bugs not dealing correctly with it. There is more to dislike but I'm going to take the approach that a fair amount of this will eventually get corrected. So until then, I'll put it on the shelf and revert to the atv3.

We are keeping our ATV4, but it is now the least used streamer we have behind the new FireTV and the new Roku. It feels a little bit like a downgrade since some features that the ATV 3 had were removed. My hubby spent hours one day trying to pair various BT keyboards with it, and then trying to get the remote app to work with it, until I came home and told him Apple had removed support for both those items. He was not happy.

I don't like the new light colored interface, and we use a Harmony remote, so the new remote has no use for us. I assume we will eventually get back BT keyboard/remote app support to make searches easier, it's just unfortunate it didn't release with that function.

Overall the new FireTV is our most used streamer. They fixed the Dolby Digital bug within a week of release, and it's been running like a champ ever since. The new Roku tends to get really hot, but it's nice to have M-go and Vudu access, so we keep it. We pretty much only use the ATV4 for iTunes stuff now.

Actually, it's not just semantics, you hit on the exact issue right there.
Nice work!

Bought one yesterday and it's okay. Just a little redundant since I already have a PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, etc. so far it doesn't have enough unquie apps that make it worth my time :(

Did ATV3 has access to Amazon Prime? I wonder if they are waiting until after the holidays to put forth an amazon app.

I can't remember if the prior ATV had an Amazon app. It seems like at one point there was one, although it was a pain to use because you couldn't rent stuff directly through it. I might be imagining that tho.

I am sure in app purchases are the problem and probably why we won't get it anytime soon.

Bought a $25 roku stick from Best Buy this week. Will be selling my Apple TV. Just can't justify $200 for my Apple tv right now. Perhaps six months, or a year from now the App Store will make it worth it. If that happens, I will purchase it again. But as of now I feel that I am not getting enough bang for my buck. But I will say it does have the potential to be good one day.

I bought a product and didn't like it. So I returned it. Let's all talk about it.

I think folks like to find others to complain to and make a statement that they are so fed up with said product that they felt the need to return it and hope to find others that will commiserate with them. If that makes them feel better, so be it. Sometimes it's best playing the "wait and see" approach prior to making a pricey purchase.
