It's the trade off for having an edge to edge display (plus makes Apple devices stand out, which I expect they like for marketing reasons).

Would you prefer TouchID, mounted under the screen / in the power button / on the rear? Genuine question. Personally, I quite like FaceID on the iPhone, though would prefer it to be on the longer edge on the iPad (as they've now moved to).

What we want, I imagine, is under-screen Face ID and camera that are simply invisible, without quality compromised. This is becoming increasingly possible through marvelous technological advances.

Dynamic Island can be there for notifications, and then the island vanishes, as if it was on the back of a giant turtle…

Sure, but under-screen FaceID cameras aren't possible (at least, not yet). So what would we have wanted Apple to do in the meantime? Stick with TouchID (perhaps under the screen)? Or go with the notch? Because those are the only two options, short of using some other ID tech I'm not aware of.

I’m okay with the Dynamic Island for now. I actually quite like it a lot more than the notch. But one day it will have to go. When the tech is there.

Don’t make it bigger, my pocket size can’t grow that much. Battery size may be compromised to keep small. If inevitable, than it should be worth. I would not upgrade until the 3 lenses are 48 mpx, and given in a reasonable shape. Main/aux. lens differentiation must be left in the past, all should be treated equal as possible.
