So why did they bother? Nobody’s going to notice that screen size increase, but the people for whom size and weight are already well beyond the sweet point certainly will notice a change in that.
3mm is the size increase vertically. It's close to twice that diagonally. Yes, people will notice. As for why they'd bother, it means more room for more battery.

This particular increase isn't as bad as I feared but we just had an increase from 6.1" to 6.2" and not long before that we had the increase from 5.8" to 6.1". If it keeps going like that the smaller iPhones will be Max sized by 2030 and the Max will be an iPad Mini.

Maybe that's why Apple refuses to refresh the iPad Mini? They'll just wait until the Max reaches that size and make up some ad of how the Pro Max 8" is now a phone and tablet all in one, the latest in content consumption, we think you'll love it.

Like I get it, big phone sell big to make big money. But maybe listen to the customers that say the only reason they bought an iPhone in the first place is that they didn't want an Android phablet.

I think you’ll be fine. They put on the A17 Pro the Neural Engine that the M3 didn’t receive. So if there’s a soft cutout of certain on-device features, that will probably include the A17 Pro and the M4 SoC
huh- I wasn't aware of that :)

Will be interesting to see how screen protectors handle this change. Currently a lot of them have the black border around the edge of the protector. A lot, if not all, cover up 1-2 pixels of the screen. Some say they don't but they do. Will they drop the black border? Will they make one that actually fits? Current ones that don't go edge to edge will be too short and cause rainbows.

Again, will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I asked what happens if he drops it or cracks the screen ... and has he ever?

"Oh yeah! I've replaced the phone 3 times now"

This year, Apple is set to increase the size of its premium iPhones, and it will be the first size update we've had in several years. While we've known for some time that the iPhone 16 Pro will measure in at 6.3 inches (up from 6.1) and the Pro Max will measure in at 6.9 inches (up from 6.7), we have not had a complete picture of every dimension, until now.

Despite being bigger phones, one dimension in particular that is reduced on the iPhone 16 Pro models is the screen border. Chinese Weibo-based leakers UniverseIce and Instant Digital have now corroborated rumored bezel sizes for both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, providing a comprehensive picture of the dimensions of Apple's next-generation devices ahead of the iPhone 16 series' launch around mid-September. Here they are compared to Apple's iPhone 15 Pro models.

Last year, Apple reduced the screen border on iPhone 15 Pro models using low-injection pressure over-molding, or LIPO. This year, Apple is said to be using Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology, which allows for a more compact and efficient layout of the circuitry under the display, resulting in even slimmer bezels.

As the tables show, the screen border on the iPhone 16 Pro is 1.2 mm (down from 1.71 mm), which is a 30% reduction. Meanwhile, the border on the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max is 1.15 mm (down from 1.55 mm), which is a 26% reduction. For a rival phone comparison, the border on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is 1.5 mm.

The reductions are expected to give Apple's premium smartphones the "narrowest screen frame in the world." But to get a better idea of the difference between last year's iPhone 15 Pro Max and the forthcoming iPhone 16 Pro Max, UniverseIce shared the following picture.

To users coming from an iPhone 15 Pro model, the screen border difference is likely to look slight, but it's worth remembering that the displays themselves are bigger on the iPhone 16 Pro models, and a narrower screen border will reduce how much bigger the chassis needs to be, so the effect is likely to be more significant when actually holding the phone and looking at the the screen in real life.

For those planning to upgrade from an older iPhone "Pro" model though, the screen differences are pretty obvious – UniverseIce provided the following comparison of the iPhone 16 Pro Max alongside the iPhone 13 Pro Max, released in 2021.

If slimmer bezels don't seem that big a deal on their own, the new iPhones also have upgraded camera technology, a new Capture button, new modem chips, new color options, and more. Didn't the Dynamic Island launch on the iPhone 14 Pro? How come the 13 Pro Max shown here has a Dynamic Island? did they mean the 14 Pro instead?

Yes, I think some are underestimating how significant a size change this is. It's both good and bad. Good in that it's a pretty significant screen size change, esp. when you add in the bezel size reduction, but bad that it will be noticeable for many people especially if they're putting them in pants pockets. I already find my 6.7" iPhone 12 Pro Max kinda large for my pockets and I'm not keen on going larger. If it was a 1 mm all around it's one thing, but a 3 mm height difference is something I'd likely notice right away.

BTW, I was playing around with our old iPhone XR and I'm actually OK with that physical size. I hadn't really considered it before, but for the first time I'm considering forgoing the Pro Max and going with the Pro.

iPhone XR - 1792x828 with 896x414 pixel points
iPhone 12 Pro Max - 2778x1284 with 926x428 pixel points
iPhone 14 Pro - 2556x1179 with 852x393 pixel points
iPhone 14 Pro Max - 2796x1290 with 932x430 pixel points

iPhone 16 Pro - ?
iPhone 16 Pro Max - ?

Any guesses as to the resolution and pixel points for the iPhone 16 series? I'm too lazy to go through the math right now.

I have never bought a screen protector with a black border. What's the advantage?

Yeah, that's just nuts. o_O

Oh Apple always suckering us with “innovative “ upgrades that in reality are nothing and calling it “revolutionary “ just stop please.

WHY are they making the Pro bigger at a faster rate than the Max?!?

If people want a bigger screen, sell them the Max.

Stop making the small(er) iPhone into the big iPhone!

There are plenty of screen protectors available without the black borders on them, Belkin for a start, which are one of the best quality and sold at Apple Stores.I have one of them.

What do you use now?
You feel like what you have currently would be accurately described as a "paperweight"?
A 15 Pro Max.I do like the Titanium finish but miss the weight of the 14 Pro Max I had before.I don't miss the fingerprint smudges though.

I for one wasn't really asking for wider or taller, I would have taken the bezel reduction technology to be put into being more hand comfortable with the same screen size

So, how much more usable screen area, accounting for the bezel change and bigger screen?

This is a measure that matters. Kinda.

dont want, a iPhone 5s sized phone would still be perfect. the 13 mini was also a perfect size phone
That is kind of a contradictory statement.

The iPhone 5s is a 4" phone measuring 123.8 mm x 58.6 mm.
The iPhone 13 mini is a 5.4" phone measuring 131.5 mm x 64.2 mm.

ie. There is a big difference in size between the two.

he said "was also a perfect size" meaning the person was fine with 5s, but also didn't mind the mini.
