I have to agree here. It just seems more custom/uniform when it’s actually built into the dash, and I do feel that the higher viewing angle with the display ‘sitting on top of the dash’, just kind of gives it more of an obstruction in field of view, even though that seems trivial.
And visibility in modern cars isn't so great to begin with. I'd way prefer to not have a screen intruding into my field of vision above the dashboard.

Love wireless carplay. Got a free upgrade from the dealer (edit: not for a Honda). Wireless carplay starts automatically and "just works".
Actually wasn’t a civic. Was discussing the wireless CarPlay aspect rather than the car aspect.
What brand? I'm curious to know what make is handling this upgrade the "right" (at least in my view) way.

...unless you're going out of your way to not reveal this info?!? OpSec concerns or something?

Wireless CarPlay should have been the norm since the start. Why the wire??? Just to make money. And those expensive dongles to convert to wireless, so stupid.
Or, you know...the time it takes for technology advancements to be developed, scaled, tested and released.

"Why the dock connector? iPhones should have been Lightning from the start!"
"Why Intel? Macs should have been Apple Silicon from the start!"
"Why Compact Flash? Should have been microSD from the start!"
"Why Ethernet? Should have been Wi-Fi from the start!"

It’s an Infiniti, I bought the car a year and a half ago, no wireless CarPlay. About a month ago I received an email for a free software update.

I really don’t like the look of these popup displays. They should be built in. It looks better.
Hard agree. This configuration makes the screen look like such an afterthought, like the engineers forgot about it and duct taped the screen on at the last possible second.

Even some "luxury" brands do this! Hideous. The worst car interior design trend of the last 30 years.

Edit: Grammar.

Expensive? I bought a chinese one for $65 and it is awesome. From a dealership you will end up paying hundreds if not thousands for wireless feature.

Not everyone uses wireless charging and it’s nice to have the phone kept charged...
Also, wired connections are still the most reliable and my preference if given an option.
It depends on how far you drive. If i am driving multiple short trips, wireless carplay is a godsend and i do not care much about charging. I just do not want to fish the phone out of my pocket and connect it for a 5 minute journey only to pack it up again.

If i drive for an hour or more i don’t mind connecting a cable.

Off topic, but is anybody using an iPad as a GPS/entertainment in their car? I'm toying with the idea of getting a cellular 5th gen iPad Mini on sale, mounting it in the middle of the dash and connecting via Bluetooth so I can have a larger map and stop having to use my iPhone.

The main downside I'm imagining is that I'd probably have to take the iPad out when parking for a while so nobody steals it.

I too wish they had it in the lower trims. I just gave my daughter a 2022 Civic Sport for Christmas and we took it on a road trip over the past few days. Carplay worked perfect, but unfortunately on her trim it had to be plugged in. It did come up quickly once connected. This is better than my much more expensive Tesla that has zero Apple Carplay, as we all know...which is lame.

I would guess that it works like Bluetooth. You can have multiple devices configured to connect to the car, but can define one device to have priority over the other.
If I can choose which phone I want to connect then no problem. If it picks a phone by default and then is a pain to switch once it's connected then that's not great.

Car bluetooth generally connects automatically and is a real annoyance when trying to work with multiple phones. I'd like to see a phone selection screen after pushing a CarPlay button on the car's screen.

Not every device has wireless charging capabilities. not every car has wireless charging built into it.

I went with a 2022 Accord EX-L hybrid that has wireless Android Auto/CarPlay. I can place my phone on the wireless charging pad while I use CarPlay or AA. Earlier Thursday, I was using CarPlay and it simply dropped out and my Note 10+ took it's place. The car will look for something to connect to if it loses a connection. I've found that while I was using CarPlay to listen to a podcast, the Accord was also connected to my Note 10+ for phone calls. It constantly searches for other devices to stay connected to.
