I shall be returning mine. The weight of the phone pulls the vents downwards, then the weight makes the grips slide off over a short period of time.

I've been trying to get this for the wife but Apple ain't shipping until like mid January.

I’ve had mine for almost a month now after picking it up from my local Apple store. Haven’t had the phone fall once. U-turns, quick stops, quick acceleration. I don’t have wireless CarPlay so I would still need to plug in.

I like the idea of a Magsafe car mount, but not a vent one. I'd get one if it had a suction cup mount that can attach to my windscreen and that includes charging via Magsafe. Currently using the Belkin universal car phone mount which i really like. Turn that into Magsafe with charging and i'm sold!
Vent clips invariably destroy the vent fins, especially with the heaviest of the phones. Been there, and it isn't a cheap repair.

It should be pretty obvious, but if it were made of aluminum then the $40 price point could be debatable. $40 for a plastic mount is not.
Hang on a minute, we are talking about aluminum, right? Looks like some people tend to think it's some kind of premium material just because it's cold to the touch. Let me tell you, aluminum is dirt cheap.

Do you have 12 pro max or the regular 12 size?

Good question. From what I read it seems some Apple cases seems to strengthen the magnetic hold.
Is this the difference between those that feel it is a weak hold vs those that say it sits really firm?

I bought one today and it works great with my pro. I use an apple case so that may make a difference. The magnet is very sturdy and keeps the phone in place without any issues. Maybe some others have had a product in need of replacement or been using third party cases. I did see one video review where the guy said his third party case didn’t work well with the holder. You need to push the holder into the vent quite firmly to get it to stay properly. Instruction leaflet indicates that.

I didn’t send mine back in the end, I took it apart (with some scratches) but now it fits perfectly in my vans original mount, so no more sliding of air vents.

Some folks are recommending traditional magnetic car mounts, but Apple does not recommend them.
I wonder if there is a problem with attaching an Apple MagSafe charger puck to a traditional magnetic car mount, then attaching the phone to the MagSafe puck. See post #65 by gianic.

They aren't strong enough, at least with the 12 ProMax (it falls off).

I amend my review; I took a drive last weekend and my iPhone 12 Pro Max (and the mount) fell off of my vent, and it was just standard city and highway driving. No crazy turns or anything. Faulty design; wish I was within my return window.

I ordered this off Amazon; with the hook it should stay attached to the vent. Magnets are strong, but it’s not officially a MagSafe accessory. It does charge via Qi.
