This damn thunderbolt licensing is driving me insane. You can't buy any decent hub without spending loads.

I think that has relatively little to do with Thunderbolt licensing and more to do with the fact that most Thunderbolt docks are acting as full desktop docks such as the PC world has been using for decades. These have fairly expensive internals to support all the various connections, and hefty power supplies to support the dock and laptop combined. PC docks have pretty much always gone for $200 or more.
 
I wish some of these docks supported sata/ esata.. At some point I’m going to need it.

I boot from an old TB goflex interface with an ssd plugged in. Those aren’t available anymore.. When it fails, what’s the most cost effective way to externally plug in the ssd again? (My iMac doesn’t have the latest TB) - the only caddy type things I’ve seen have been expensive and for RAID/multiple drives?

The Caldigit TB3 dock has esata ports for same price as Elgato's.
