Desperation...

Although Apple devotees steadfastly defend the company based on its massive cash pile, the top executives seem obsessed about cramming "laptop replacement" thoughts down our throats.

Our throats? Probably best to speak only for yourself.

And with that, how strange that you feel your throat is being crammed. Why do you let Apple have so much power over your life to feel that way? That doesn't seem very healthy.

My iPad has replaced my laptop. I haven't booted up my laptop in over 2 years.
As a grad student, I would always need a actual laptop...if I wasn't in school I probably could use the iPad pro as my laptop replacement...things like presentations, word, and excel need mouse support so my ipad pro is more of a media consumption and note taking device....

I know exactly why the hate. THink about it - the apple product costs a lot more than competitor and return less value for the dollar in their own eyes. If you spent $1000 on something that is only good for email and surfing the web then you'd be pissed too.

The mentality is simple - we all want everything cheap - not just cheap as in quality cheap but price has to be cheap, product has to do everything we want. Or else it's considered a ripoff. It's considered overpriced.

Before I bought my apple Smart Keyboard I was not in the market for that accessory because of the high price - FOR A KEYBOARD. It wasn't until I went to the store and actually used it - I was amazed at the fit and finish and quality. Apple does have high standards when it comes to product quality. It's amazing vs those Amazon $19.99 covers/keyboards.

But majority of people don't see pass the price tag and only want cheap dollar and high value items. that's why there is so much hate.

Are you serious?
And what if "Word" cost 99$?

I expect Apple to come up with some solution to display tabs side by side (Safari) and documents too (iWorks)...

Well you can't open two of the same instances of an app at the same time. There is no work-around. I see no other way than to use one word app and split-view with an iWork app opening another word document to get what you want done. Is this stupid? Hell yes but it works fine. I just wish they'd stop letting marketing dept. run the software UI development group at Apple.

Also factor in that Microsoft NEVER advertises the Surface without the optional TypeCover. Microsoft themselves know that the Surface is a sub-par tablet.
The Surface isn't a tablet at all, it's a Tablet-PC, which means it promises to run PC software made for keyboard and mouse. Not necessary a physical keyboard, but a keyboard with ESC, CTRL and ALT keys, with F1...F12 keys, PgUp PgDn Home End keys, four cursor keys and separate keys for DEL and BCKSP as well as ENTR and RTRN. Even without German umlauts the 101-keys standard IBM PC keyboard is a nightmare when cramped on a 10 or 7 inch tablet. But they can't omit a single key, because some old program might need it.

I agree with everything you wrote. On that subject, I would also add it doesn't seem to be enough for them to come to the conclusion the value doesn't make sense for their particular situation and can easily move on. They feel compelled to make it their life's mission to try and foist their views on others whose life situation may be totally different. Very unhealthy.

For example... Mercedes makes very nice cars with some of the best and latest tech out there. I would love to own one. Because of their price and my economic situation, that's not an auto I'll be driving anytime soon - the value proposition doesn't make sense for me personally. However, I would never make it my mission to project my views onto others who may very well be in a different economic situation and find that a Mercedes is indeed an excellent value.

To claim the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement is just dumb.

I can't use Sketch, any full Adobe apps on it, but then I don't want to. There should always be a clear line of separation between iOS and Mac OS.

In either case I suspect many, if not most of those intending to do some serious stuff on their tablets are going to buy the Pro. As noted before, in effect Apple basically just upped the baseline price for the 9.7" by $100.

The Air2 might languish for a year or two, and once sales drop off significantly, they could quietly discontinue it.
And we get basically to what some people is noticing: in front of declining sales, once the Air2 is discontinued, customer's choice will be limited to higher entry-level prices.

Well. Sometimes you just reach a dead end. :)

The guy basically called me a liar. Sorry, I'm going to defend myself when someone makes those accusations.
[doublepost=1459202987][/doublepost]yeah. apple is really pushing it on the low end :(

i can't endorse the ipad pro. i wish they released a 64gb version for $599 or make the 128gb version for $699

this storage thing is really getting on my nerves. i would've bought it day one if it had 64gb at $599

Of course. Only non-technical people call the iPad Pro a "laptop replacement".

I think we can all thank Phil Schiller for those lies. The man has no limits to lying. If he didn't mention those 600 million PC's and how he felt sorry for people using those 5 year and older pc's, there wouldn't be that much of he hatred going around.

If you have 5 year old PC - I wouldn't use it to surf the web, do anything on it. I still have my 2008 early aluminum MBP 15" and damn, I use it for EE work! WIth a new SSD it is a bit faster than with a traditional HDD.

Some will also argue about that Mercedes not having all the features their Hyundai has and how it is not worth the money or bad in dollar/value ratio. You can't satisfy everyone especially ignorant people who still insist on buying cheap PC's and then comparing to an iPad (Pro).

I said the iPad is a replacement for MANY of those professions. Not ALL. Your exception does not mean its the rule.

How am I qualified? Because I see people with those jobs use iPads instead of laptops as their primary work computer.

Sure, if all your work applications are web based. Many, many professionals need actual software running natively on their PC. It's quite a stretch most professions consist of email, web browsing, and light productivity app use. Not everyone is someone's admin assistant. There are people out there doing real work with real data using proprietary software to offer a unique product to the people they serve.

What's wrong with casual users?

I didn't say there was anything wrong with casual users.

Through the years we've seen the iPad marketed as the beginning of the post-PC era, a laptop replacement, a pro machine, etc. We all know that none of these things are--maybe partly--but not wholly true. That's what I was implying. Tim Cook would never say that the iPad is "great for casual users." He would say that "the iPad is the future of mobile computers."

on the iPad its as simple as downloading the correct app. Windows the trouble shooting would require downloading the correct codecs, which might not be that simple for some users

That's not an option in my scenario, sorry.

Much faster CPU/GPU
Smart Connector for a better keyboard experience (don't have to deal with flaky bluetooth)
Better speakers
Better screen
More future proof

You've said Bluetooth twice now and I wonder what you think of the iMac since its included peripherals are Bluetooth. Are they flaky? Should they be wired instead?

So we have prettier screen + better sound == pro.

the problem with companies is that they will not want to expend more than they need to. Think about it - if you worked for a company that made water jets for cutting metal would you bother to write software on an iPad to somehow integrate that into the CNC machines you design? I mean that's even if the iPad can even do that in the first place. You'd use cheap Windows XP machines to do all the grunt work because it is cheap and better to write software on that platform due to the cheap costs of the components needed to build a PC.

In this world it comes down to economics - every company doesn't want to lose money - Apple is not in it to lose money and many see them as a WTF company - who are they to make an iPad and iOS and then tell me that I need to use this over a $100 computer I can make on my own (not including the costs of Windows OS software). WHy should we let Apple dictate this is the future of computing that is on an iPad using iOS?

If companies did make software designed to run on iOS then that would be awesome - but in our legacy software industry people don't change for the sake of changing. There is zero incentive for any established company who's software is the foundation of their business to switch out and use iPads just because it's hip to do so. That's why these legacy software they are using are so susceptible to viruses, malware, ransomware you know it it'll have included.

If I am to start up a company today and if I can possibly write software to support my company's operations I would definitely invest in Apple because in the long run I would not have all these issues PC's (Windows) have. I'd be sure it will be awesome to be able to run my company from mobile devices and not have to be locked down to old PC hardware.

Unfortunately the world is huge and no one wants to spend the money so they are stuck with legacy crap they must support into the future. They can't benefit from any of these new gadgets that can make work easier. This is why we have not advanced far as a species yet because it comes down to profit margins and the way of life is basically the pursuit of materials things and not to better humanity. Sad :(

/end soap box rant.

A lot of points here but basically I was responding to the claim that an iPad is ready to take on these tasks. As you point out, it is not.

I think you'll find that a Windows PC used in an industrial environment may cost thousands and isn't going to be replaced without good reason. Also, apps rebuilt from the ground up lose a lot of functionality and take years to get it back. This is the case right in the Apple ecosystem.

On the bright side, I do see iPads being leveraged more and more. Just look at what it has done to POS for small businesses.

On the not so bright side, it's a little depressing to hear people say the vast majority of the population is basically computer illiterate. The US is going to continue to get trounced if this is really true. People should be doing more and more with computers, finding better ways to do things and synthesizing new knowledge. I want to hear that the iPad can do more to meet people's needs, not people's needs are so minimal that an iPad will do just fine.

Enjoyed reading your thoughts.

Arguing about the "Pro" moniker is pointless. Everyone has different needs and expectations.

For me personally using a device that can't stay connected to an SSH session for more than 3 minutes is laughable. Because of its many restrictions it's just not fit for purpose. My decade old Nokia s60 phone is more "Pro" in that regard.

If it works well in your field then good for you. You'd probably find that Nokia completely useless and that's fine.

You are American and you can't understand your own language? They said it could a LAPTOP REPLACEMENT for casual users, not that it's a tablet for casual users only...

Please so define what a pro is... Because I'm quite sure I am a professional and I'm using iOS devices to do actual jobs.
I'd really be interested to hear what sort of professional work you've done completely start to finish on an iPad, aside from making a drawing or writing a blog post.

Your insult about me not knowing my own language was a pathetic attempt to deflect the topic at hand. Casual laptop users do no more than casual tablet users: They check their email, browse the web, post to social media, and look at photos.
