I am fine with the iPad being always for the casual user. But the prices should reflect that. When you add a keyboard and pencil we are on MB territory prices and this is where I think it fails. The iPads should be way more reasonably priced at this point.

There are many options available for cheaper keyboards and stylus for iPad.

Casual users does not equal cheap. I'd argue that most of the big Apple spenders are 'casual' users.

And what's wrong with an iPad Pro being the same price as a Macbook? An iPad has many advantages over a Macbook. Its lighter, thinner, and more portable. For many its easier to use and has a touch screen interface.

This is like saying a Ferrari should be cheaper than a F350 truck because Ferrari's are used for casual/recreational uses. While the F350 is used for real work.

Exactly! As long as the iPad continues to run a blown-up iPhone interface with very few enhancements and optimizations, it can never be a fully viable alternative to a notebook or even the Surface Pro.
When was last time you actually used an iPad ? 2013 ?
Reality check: iOS differentiated iPhone from iPad since iOS 8, and even more with iOS 9.

You think nobody has ever struggled to play a video back on a Windows computer? Do you know how many support calls I've fielded on this issue from family/friends/coworkers??

The difference is, at least with a desktop os, you can try a multitude of different browsers, video playback software, and methods to get it to work. Not the case at all with ios.

This thing would be great if it had 3 or 4 GB RAM. Glad I have the 12.9". And honestly I don't think I could ever go back to a smaller size now. Split screen, slide over and PIP are all so much more useful on a larger display. I have a feeling we got the 9.7" version now because iPad specific software changes are coming with iOS 10.

I'm curious though, how does one define "Pro"? Is something only "Pro" if it runs x86 apps and has a file system and USB ports? Is there a standard set of features/specs that determines whether a device is "Pro" or not?
The whole question about what a "pro" is , is utterly ridiculous.
Consider a rich dude reading Mail, browsing the web and collecting photos on a $3000 Mac Pro. And the consider another dude working with an iPad mini managing gears worths $9 millions each (myself).
Who's the Pro ? The one using a "pro" computer or the one using an old iPad mini ?

Forums like this always amaze me for the quantity of BS I can read on ...

If you don't want to go back and read all the posts, here is a summarization of most of them:

Until Apple releases a proper iPad for me as a pro I think Apple has gone downhill. Being that I'm not a consumer as those are only grandmas who use computers for opening up a web browser. The new iPad is a POS. They need to add 16gb of memory, give it a keyboard, add a trackpad to the keyboard, preferably with force touch. Make the screen bigger and add a 1TB drive and have it run full OS X applications. I also want it to have a file system so it's more usable. Maybe attach the screen to the keyboard permanently so it's not as wobbly as the surfacebook. I think an intel processor in there would be good too because the iPad I haven't even seen yet feels slow.

Reviewers are definitely getting paid billions by apple to make their products seem better than they are. I mean come on? It's not even an iPad PRO. I tried running full version of adobe effects on it, and guess what? It didn't work! Wouldn't even install!! What a POS. It even sucks as a consumer device. I installed the full version of battlefield 4 and the damn thing a) doesn't load and says, you cannot run this windows exe on an iPad. It is NOT a replacement because it requires a PC since iPads don't even have Direct X. Talk about being behind the time apple. I'm surprised reviewers didn't mention anything about that, those kiss as**s. They are definitely getting paid and get free tickets to the events for omitting my needs from their reviews which clearly reflect all the other professionals.

Even though I haven't used it yet, I can't believe they only put 2gb of ram. I need more RAM. I'm a pro damnit! Pro's need at least 16gb of RAM. I don't know anything about memory optimization, but I do know that Android tablets and surfaces have more. Apple is just losing their touch, Steve would never allow them to only put 2gb of RAM on the device. I mean... with only 2.. it's like... you know, not enough RAM. We need more RAM. Otherwise it's a consumer device with less RAM. I think it would be ok if they put at least 3GB of RAM and then Apple would just RAM them all.

There you have it, the new Apple wishlist everyone wants.

What can I say?

Coming from a Windows PC, laptop, Android Phone and Android Tablet. Then switching to Mac, iPad, iPhone has been night and day. Apple products JUST WORK.

Same here since 1984, 1st Mac.

But, if you read this forum it seems like the PC world is perfect and Apple only produces garbage.

The iPad Pro is really sweet. I'll buy one eventually, when I can spare the cash. Can't decide whether the 9.7 inch or the huge one would be better. Portability vs. screen real estate. Always comes down to the same thing.

The difference is, at least with a desktop os, you can try a multitude of different browsers, video playback software, and methods to get it to work. Not the case at all with ios.

Only true to an extent. The most likely video type that could not be played was Flash, and there are a multitude of browsers in the app store that will access this content. From the point of view of most end users, if a video doesn't play, it doesn't play and their ability to do anything about it is limited. An iOS device probably has better web compatibility for video out of the box than any other type of computer available today. And if your website isn't compatible with iOS, well, you're an idiot.

Is it not impossible to cater for casual professionals now? you can still be professional if you're wearing a TShirt and jeans surely? No wonder Apple is moving away from their IMac line when people have to buy a suit and tie to use it. o_O

Pretty sure that the review "tag" in the headline has always been the case. For the casual user, the iPad has always been a great alternative.

Exactly. The iPad has always been for a casual user. It's great for watching YouTube, and reading email, and playing games, and whatnot, but it is still not a laptop replacement. Most professionals will still need a real computer.

Reality check: iOS differentiated iPhone from iPad since iOS 8, and even more with iOS 9.

Before iOS was poorly redesigned, the previous UI took much better advantage of the larger display canvas but now, it's quite obvious that iOS 7+ was not designed with the iPad in mind, almost an afterthought. Many UI elements as well as many of the core stock apps simply look blown-up from the iPhone interface. It's most apparent on the larger iPad 'Pro' especially with the unnecessarily huge gaps between the home screen icons.

Hopefully iOS gets a more proper and better thought-out redesign soon that gives the iPhone and iPad equal attention and treatment.

The problem isn't the hardware, it's the OS. iOS is not a substitute for OSX (or windows). Microsoft got that with the surface. I'm watching a number of my mac-using friends switch to surface/windows 10 because of the hybrid data entry - and it's still a real OS, not a toy.

Apple needs to have a non iOS answer for the surface - it's too locked down and limited to ever replace a full computing OS for most users (they could start by adding true, non-cloud, local storage and a USB 3 connector).

name me the last turd Apple released?

Apple has earned its reputation of producing quality products.

Except their software. They need to spend some of that cash horde on a bunch of bug hunters.

I wonder if we will ever see another non-pro tablet update in 9,7" size

I hope so, it desperately needs USB 3. Moving 128GB on USB2 is *painful*

Most professionals will still need a real computer.

That's a false statement. Many Teachers, Doctors, Lawyers, Chefs, Drivers, Installers, Artist, do fine without a 'real' computer.

And what the hell make a computer a 'real' computer? Sounds like someone imposing his opinion on the masses.

Fair point. I still hate the fact that we still have crappy website developers that think we still need mobile websites. Often these work worse than the desktop site being accessed with a mobile phone. Buttons that don't work, can't find anything, half the features are hidden or non existent of the main site. the button for the desktop site works once, then all subsequent pages redirect to mobile. Barf.

Great to read mails and surf. I cannot connect anything. Cannot expand anything. Has no card reader. No file manager, no finder. Where are your files on an iPad?icloud? And if you have no connection?
But with keyboard and mouse and pen you can buy a real computer. The iPad is great but it is quite far from being a laptop replacement.
