Tile slim has a great form factor. The problem is it has to WORK. As a long time Tile user, I find Airtags much better in terms of actually responding when i want them to. I can’t tell you h I’ve many times Tiles have not responded when I try to ring them. I find the item myself first and can’t get the Tile to wake up until I press the button physically. The hole and form factor everyone keeps harping on are pretty secondary to whether the item works consistently.
Good point. Granted, the lack of a hole means having to buy an extra accessory (more times that not). However, if you can't get the device to function as it should, the rest is rather moot.

I’ve bought one. Curious to see what they’re like and can just stick it on an extra key ring. Now the hype has died down, the practically of a hole is good for some use cases.

Does that built-in button in Chipolo has any other functionality? Or it’s only used for activation purposes?

This is how they could actually differentiate. Use it like a camera button? Or like in their original Chipolo - you can double-click it and your phone would ring. So you don’t use only your phone to find your keys, but your keys to find your phone as well. Helped me out a few times as I don’t have an AW for such purposes.

It's a lose-lose situation for Tile. I kind of understand why they went with their lawsuit even if I don't agree with it. If they join findMy they are actively destroying from their Android (and existing iOS) user's network and becoming an AirTag clone. If they don't they have to deal with the enormous disadvantage of owning and maintaining a less effective and populated network that won't appeal to iOS users.
I believe they could pursue a dual pronged approach. Keep the current network on android (until they copy findMy), keep the network on iOS for those who opt in, and allow the findMy for customers who opt into that. It seems the limitation is an either or on a per customer basis, primarily so data can't be gathered and tracked for the FindMy network.

also, they are concerned that they lose their customer data to Apple who doesn't gather it or keep it so LOL to that.

I don't understand the fascination with the shinyness of the AirTag. How often will other people see it?

Also, it's ridiculous that you have to pay for a way to attach it to something. Deliberate profiteering by Apple. There are many things Apple makes that are premium for a usable value (AirPods and voice calls, for example). This is not one of them. And the delay on opening up wideband to competitors smells like another monopoly practice to juice sales and market share.

Lacking any mention of the power situation? Is it user replaceable/chargeable or just like a Tile?

*EDIT* found on their website, same 2032 battery replaceable with up to 2 years life.

Same issue with mine tile. They are simply not reliable.

People make a big deal about the hole. I guess if some people are into the utilitarian look of chipolo then they have an alternative. It seem for some the extra expense on a nice keychain is too much.

NEVERMIND. There's the Chipolo ONE and the Chipolo ONE Spot. The Spot is newer and more expensive than the plain ONE (but still has a hole!) New pre-orders for the ONE Spot are said to ship in August.

Chipolo ONE (not Spot) is available in single quantities for less than $25 on Amazon or a 4-pack for $75, with several colors to choose from (including black).
And Chipolo has a slimmer device for wallets--but it's been pointed out this device doesn't work with Find My (thanks DoubleFlyaway).
Add $8-12 just to add a hole to each AirTag.

The problem is that Chipolo's slim device doesn't work with Find My. It works with their legacy network. If it worked with FindMy, I'd give it a shot.

I don't want to put a keychain on my pet's neck.
For my keys, I don't want even more weight.

I loved Gruber trying to find reasons why not having a hole was a good thing, on his latest podcast 😂

The only question I want answered and that the article did not address is whether it is more effective for stolen items. I did a test with coworkers and my airtag that I gave to a buddy alerted him he was being followed within 20 minutes! For whoever steals my camera bag one day they are going to get plenty of warning to dig through for a hidden tracker and dump it. If this product offers the Find-My global network but doesn't alert to being tracked so frustratingly quickly I will return my 4 pack of airtags. Obviously I know the "airtag isn't designed for theft" so don't @ me, but its frustrating how close it is to being perfect.

One Spot has another designed just for a wallet and I'll be getting that. If they have a feature that warns me I've been seperated from my item, I'll buy a whole bunch.

Both Tile and Chipolo have a version just for the wallet. Also, Chipolo has a killer feature that will warn you if you've become seperated from your item which is way better than having to go looking for it perhaps hours later. I don't know if Tile has that. I'll be getting some Chipolos for that feature and and for the wallet.

EDIT+++ Tile does have Smart Alerts to tell you you've been seperated or forgot the item, but they charge you a monthly fee of $2.99 while Chipolo doesn't chare for this. This feature is critical and it's missing from Airtags.

Wallet vetsions have to be sent back when battery dies and pay a fee for replacement... and possibly different models as well. Too convoluted at Chipolo to figure it out. So beware. Hmph!

So if we want the hole it has to be that big. I can see why Apple went smaller
Yes, but once you wrap the AirTag in an accessory that allows you to attach it to your keyring, the size and weight will be the same or more.
You get the flexibility and won’t need it if you just want to slide it in, but … the iPhone is slim until you apply it’s protective cover, the AirTag small until you want to attach it to something … Those guys give you a useful feature at a slightly larger size.

It doesn't do anything that I know of. No response when I press it.
Per the instruction manual on Chipolo’s site, the button on the One Spot has 2 functions:

1) During the initial pairing with phone
2) To do a factory reset on the tag

Note: On the Chipolo One (the model that’s not compatible with Apple Find My), the button has these same 2 functions. But it also it can be used:

3) to ring your phone
4) as a remote phone camera shutter.

These additional 2 button functions are not possible on the One Spot.

So this thing is bigger than an airtag, uglier than an airtag, and has less functionality...

Why would anyone buy it? Surely not to save $1.

I'm not sold on the built in keyring hole. You can't comfortably have something this large on a keyring it needs to hang down an inch or so like an airtag does with the various accessories.

So you don’t use only your phone to find your keys, but your keys to find your phone as well. Helped me out a few times as I don’t have an AW for such purposes.
These days, you can just ask siri where your phone is. As long as the mic can hear you, it'll ring.
