Order a four pack of Chipolo Ones after reading this. They're on sale for $75 off a pack of 4... and they come in multiple colors, which is nice.

Chipolo can do something the AirTag cannot.

You can pick up your Chipolo, press it, and your iPhone will play a sound. Why? When you forgot where you put down your iPhone, it’s your Chipolo’s turn to be the one helping you find your misplaced iPhone.

"There is no equivalent feature on the ONE Spot because it doesn't have an Ultra Wideband chip, but even if it did, Apple doesn't let yet third-party companies access the U1 chip in the ‌iPhone‌ (though this is coming).

Just for the record, check out this article in that deadbeat rag macrumors: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/04/07/third-party-find-my-devices-u1-chip/. Only kidding but you have to admit it's funny when one macrumors article contradicts another one. So if you please, which article needs to be corrected?
Neither article. But your comment might need some correction.😂

The only question I want answered and that the article did not address is whether it is more effective for stolen items. I did a test with coworkers and my airtag that I gave to a buddy alerted him he was being followed within 20 minutes! For whoever steals my camera bag one day they are going to get plenty of warning to dig through for a hidden tracker and dump it. If this product offers the Find-My global network but doesn't alert to being tracked so frustratingly quickly I will return my 4 pack of airtags. Obviously I know the "airtag isn't designed for theft" so don't @ me, but its frustrating how close it is to being perfect.
This is also what I want to know. I have a few AirTags, but I’d also like a tracker that doesn’t have the “tracking alert” feature of the AirTag so that lost item tracking more effective. Was thinking for example that I’d stash one in my car.

So far read two reviews of this unit and neither addressed that aspect. My assumption would be that Apple would mandate the feature on their platform as part of them controlling privacy not only for their own tags but third parties, but haven’t found confirmation. It would seem odd for Apple to advertise the anti tracking capabilities of AirTags and then allow 3rd parties to leverage their same device network for stalking, so I’m not confident this will do what I’m after.

Tile slim has a great form factor. The problem is it has to WORK. As a long time Tile user, I find Airtags much better in terms of actually responding when i want them to. I can’t tell you how many times Tiles have not responded when I try to ring them. I find the item myself first and can’t get the Tile to wake up until I press the button physically. The hole and form factor everyone keeps harping on are pretty secondary to whether the item works consistently.
Tile is fixing that issue by suing Apple. Problem solved.

How do they contradict each other? The earlier article says, "Apple says that its U1 specification will be available to device makers 'later this spring,' so it will still be some time before we see Ultra Wideband-compatible accessories that work with the ‌Find My‌ app."

A ONE Spot with a UWB chip and better water resistance could be a success. One thing I didn't like about the AirTag when I got it is how the metal disc sticks out from the body. But, since it doesn't have a hole, and needs to be in a holder, that disadvantage is eliminated.

Sorry but the lack of U1 support is a dealbreaker. Yesterday I misplaced my wallet in my room and the sound didn’t indicate where it was located (the sound was muffled due to it being inside something). Only when I went into Precision Finding did I quickly locate it.

I’ll stick with the $25 AirTag + $13 Belkin holder for that feature alone.
Well, + $200 minimum to get the lowest-priced iPhone that can take advantage of the feature.

I anticipate Apple to buy Chipolo next month and rename the One Spot to beatsTag, thus eliminating the competition and creating a beats branded AirTag.

I hope Apple goes with a common sense approach and allows Find My trackers to be built into devices without the stalking alert notifications if those devices would be unlikely to be used for such a purpose, for example a bike.

Airtags leverage such a vast network they can give GPS a run for it's money, but that network isn't very useful for lost items. I don't need a billion devices to help me find my keys in the couch. It would be great to help find something stolen though.

The issue is how does Apple know if a device was stolen, or if the technology is being misused? They obviously can't. But, they can mandate rules that if it is built into another device that isn't easily hidden then it does not need to comply with the anti stalking measures. That would make the tech really boom. Imagine high end cameras having Find My built in, or a suitcase.

Chipolo ONE Spot — prices compared, exchange rate of today according to google:

price in the US: $ 28 = € 22,96
price in EU: € 30 = $ 36,58

That's a 60% premium you pay, just for being in the EU.

So basically, it's buy 3, get 2 if you pay in euros. I smell an opportunity for people who travel a lot, 'smuggling' iTags / ONE Spots.

Obviously I know the "airtag isn't designed for theft" but I’m really surprised to find that it isn’t designed for theft. And, I know, I know “the M1 Macs aren’t designed to allow you to install a partition and boot into Intel Windows”, but I’m kinda surprised that the M1 Macs aren’t designed to allow you to install a partition and boot into Intel Windows.

What was Apple thinking when they left out the hole?
That they had a license agreement with a third party that would cover all the folks that REALLY want a hole for cheaper than what Apple would have made it for?

Apple’s trackers are high resolution location tags. I woulndn’t be surprised if there was a future use case where having these as small and light as possible would make them easy for slipping into a pocket on, say a golf or batting glove to get biometrics during the swing.
