I wonder what the bar does if the laptop is plugged in

You would think it stays on, but I don't know. If you can find out, post.

I need to be more patient with this, but i sort of want one and had been planning on it. And patience in this forum is......;)

What issues are they having ?!?

The biggest issue is that the Touch Bar model seems to take a huge hit on battery life in real world usage when the bar is constantly on. I also don't like how the TB turns on and off automatically, but that's a minor issue compared to the battery one.

Given that you have a 14 day grace period upon receipt, you can always test the touch bar in store etc. That may or may not help with your decision.

I wish Apple would have offered another model that just had Touch ID ability. I would have gone for that one.

This.

I am curios if anyone has noted what the Touchbar does in Non-Supported Operating Systems. The love of my old MacBook Pro was that I was able to install LINUX and Window on it for times when I needed something off those Operating Systems, when working out on location.

Is it Just a BLACK LINE? What happens? I imagine BootCamp will do some wack driver for it, but what about Linux?

Supposedly it just shows the regular function keys in Boot Camp. I'm hoping it does the same in Linux.

Probably needs a hack. Just the thing hackers love to do, no?

Looking at those benchmarks make me realize how much of a trouper my 15" i7 2011 with an SSD is. The GB scores for my 2011 are 2512\7487. The 13" (i5) is 3,876/7,504. So single core is about 1/3 better and multicore is about the same. Now, that's not accounting for things like bus speeds, SSD speeds. And a much better screen. Obviously, the 2016 15" i7 is much better at 4,309/13,367. But I paid like 1900 for the 15" and the baseline 15 starts at $2300 now.

I'm not in the market for a new computer anyway. Since I have the 15" and a 2014 Air -- and a lot of my mobile needs are taken care of with my iPad Pro -- it makes sense for me to keep saving my pennies until I can afford and need whatever the top end 15" is. Because that's clearly where the bang for the buck is.

they don't seem to be raving.

there's this feeling of "Apple could have done way better". and I guess they're right.

It's hard to imagine how Apple have done way better. These incredible new machines are the best MacBook Pros Apple has ever built. And the previous generation models were already the best in class high-end professional laptops.

Apple is so far ahead of the competition at this point it is embarrassing.

There should be a user review section in this forum. Looking forward to some real user experience with the touch bar.

It stays on for me so far, until the main screen times out if you have that set to do.

The 'competition' will be using the same and better components and an OS with better APIs and drivers.

If you want to talk hardware performance, then hats off to Samsung, Intel and AMD. The credit goes to them.

Why is it a huge problem if it goes off, just tap the touch bar and it's back isn't it?

Be nice to have some control over this, like anything else. I can understand content restrictions, but this I would actually want control of.

Yeah, maybe in later OS releases it could be possible, but I suspect its due to some battery-saving implementation too.

So, I think I am going to cancel my order, what's the best alternative? Looking to spend around $2000

Woah, that bad? What made you change your mind?
Just feels like I am making too many compromises. I absolutely believe that USB-C is the future but today none of my devices are using USB-C. The keyboard is another compromise, I liked the old keyboard and the new keyboard feels like a pseudokeyboard type thing like Surface Pro type covers. Battery life seems to be fine in Ars review but then there's other reviews that say otherwise. Touchbar is basically a gimmick, every review i have seen/read has said that. If anything I'll just grab the 2015 model and wait for a revamp but these are pretty disappointing machines.

You can do what I did and order a non-TB version. Seems like a solid machine with excellent battery life. Then potentially upgrade to a Touch Bar version when the next revision comes out and they address the problems with the first build.

I have both a TB and non-TB on order. I'll decide which one to keep once more users start giving some feedback about battery life on the TB version.

I struggled. But being the consummate Apple whore that I am, I gave up. "Your out... and they pull you back in"

What's the use? :)

Sure, the touch bar is lipstick on a pig, but the space grey is a great color lipstick

Funny, I did exactly this tonight. I simply decided, that at least for now, given the battery issues and the lack of development for the touch bar (at the moment), I would go with the 13" non-touch bar base model. Ordered it 30 mins ago. Will be here in 2 days. Im coming from a mid-2012 15" rMBP, so I wonder if I will feel constrained or relieved to not have to carry that weight around on travels. I'll use the non-TB for six months and if I love it....GREAT / DONE. And if I don't love it, or find it's underpowered for my use, I'll give it to my daughter who is in high school. She is still on a 2011 MBA, so that will be quite a jump for her. I imagine that by this coming summer, Apple should have worked out some of the bumps on the 13" touch bar version and perhaps even release the next version...then Ill get that one.

Fast forward to 3.49min!! The most incredible thing for me is that the 15" is now the same size as the old 13" Air!! Actually makes me consider getting the 15' for travelling!

This guy "SERIOUSLY" to needs to cut down on his caffeine intake!!! What an overly energetic review!!!

It's time to put your glasses on (joke). The rMBP 15-inch 2016 was clearly larger. It was wider (not sure if it was deeper?) and it's quite a bit heavier. It's a great deal slimmer in all directions compared to the rMBP 15-inch 2015 and it has lost some weight as well. But it's still not in the same ballpark as the MacBook Air 13-inch.

The rMBP 13-inch 2016 on the other hand seems to be smaller in all directions, thinner (if you ignore the wedged/thinnest side of the MacBook Air) and it weights about the same as the MacBook Air 13-inch. That's pretty impressive considering it features a full-voltage CPU compared to the low-voltage one in the MacBook Air.
