Have you looked at the older articles and threads? Half of them are "new powerbook on tuesday???" or something similar. Nothing but Mac-related news is just boring. I like that MacRumors provides general Apple-related and technology-related news

The thing is, macrumors is (sadly) a collection of rumors posted on other sites, appleinsider for instance :(
But that's more or less a good thing, because this site has a simpler design and the community here is huge.

Back to the topic:
I didn't realise the new iPad used so much more energy compared to the iPad2!

I wonder if there is a way to check if you get the 2,4 without turning it on, maybe a serial number on the box?

Once a month??? I know people like to exaggerate but come on... The iPad probably has about a month battery life on standby. I probably charge a couple times a week, which is pretty good for my usage.

No Seriously, if that. I use it in the morning to browse the web and listen to music before going to work and at night to do the same before bed. I also take great care of my batteries, never leaving it sitting on charge at 100% and proper power cycling when I purchased it. The battery just LASTSSSSSS

I am gobsmacked...just bought ipad3 two weeks ago now iPad2 variant is better than iPad 3.... I am feeling i'm cheated

I don't see why so many people down voted this comment. By all intents and purposes other than the screen it SEEMS by benchmarks at least, that this revised iPad2 IS better than the NEW IPAD that we spent more money on!

It seems perfectly reasonable to me that Kasu should feel slightly gobsmacked! If I had the choice between the retina iPad and the iPad2 which blows it out of the water in speed, battery and thinness, I would choose the iPad2.

This really makes me wonder why Apple didn't put forth it's best tech for the latest iPad if they had the materials on hand. I am sure they tested the product so knew what it was capable of....

I'm still saving up for the new iPad, quite sly of Apple to make these quiet changes though, but I'm definitely still getting myself one when I can save enough...if only I knew this weekends lottery results then I'd be sorted!

I have retina display on my iPad 2. They have a hack/tweak on Cydia.

I don't think you understand what "Retina Display" means.

It's when the resolution is so high, it is difficult/nearly impossible for the average human retina to identify the pixels when held at a certain distance from the eye.

The iPad 2 is a 1024x768 device. That is not a "Retina Display" as the pixels are easily visible. This cannot change. Especially not from any software "hack" or "tweak" performed on it. The new iPad runs at 2048x1536.

If you're talking about RetinaPad; that is just something that forces a program to use its 960x640 graphic elements - which is still a lower resolution than the iPad 2's non-retina 1024x768 display.

wait, what? That's like saying the Ford engine in my truck is a Ferrari engine because of a fuel additive I like to use.

Retina is hardware. Quadruple pixel density for same screen area. No software can 'hack' one pixel to display four different colors simultaneously.
You can get 4G speeds on your original iPad or iPad 2 if you use this.

;)

Nice, I have a 2,4. Picked it up at the apple store about a month and a half ago.

I'm not really sure what you think Apple should have done.

You essentially have a choice between an iPad that has the retina display, or an iPad that's a little bit more streamlined without the retina display: a bit lighter, a bit thinner, a bit longer battery life.

The retina display was an all-or-nothing thing. It's not like Apple could say "OK, we can fit 3/4 of a retina display in there and keep the iPad 3 at the same thickness and weight and battery life as the iPad 2, so let's do that."

They could have put in a smaller battery to keep the size and weight down, but then we'd complain about the poor battery life. Or they could have put in an even bigger battery to keep ahead of the iPad 2, but then we'd complain about it being too big and heavy.

What would you have had them do?

Now you're just trolling. With all due respect there is no WAY you only charge once a month "if that" and still use it twice a day. No matter your battery care (the leaving it sitting at 100% doesn't matter anyway. The OS stops charging once the battery is full)

How did you even JB with a statement like that?

Lawls. I bet the shady dealer he bought it from convinced him to pay extra because it was "unlocked" and had "over 100 extra features" and was pretty much "retina display" anyway. Oh, and it had better battery life.

So an Apple A5X-R2 32nm would be 57% the die size and 15-30% more battery life. About a $15 part cost savings per unit.

Given a $499 price and 50% gross margin that's 15/250= 6% cost reduction. While improving battery usage and heat expression. That's cool. ;)

You have to run Geekbench to see if your iPad 2 wifi only is a 2,4.

Here comes the guy returning his iPad 2,1 for the 2,4. He's on his 25th iPad with still no luck. Maybe the 26th!

That isn't possible.

So a software hack that shrinks the physical pixel element dimensions and back fills the extra space with additional pixel elements? ...now that is one amazing software hack.

You are still limited to 1024x768 graphics.

Guys, guys, guys.
Its a joke.
He's poking fun at all the jail breakers (applies equally to android fans I guess) who every time Apple announces any new features jump all over the comments saying "I've had that for years on my jailbroken iPhone...
Have a sense of humour!

I knows what's going on here... Your wife charges the iPad during the day.

Also Apple devices do a discharge recharge while sitting at 100% so that wouldn't affect the device.

Odd having just released the iPad 3
Not really. It doesn't really improve anything with the iPad 2 other than battery performance so it's not really something they can market.

The biggest benefit to Apple is that the die shrink should result in cheap components. Smaller die = more chips per silicon wafer = lower unit cost.

This also allows their semiconductor manufacturer partner to perfect the new process with an existing design without the demands of ensuring enough supply for a major new high-volume product (i.e., the next generation iPhone) based on a new chip design.

Once they have this process optimized, they can be comfortable in having enough capacity to supply tens of millions of chips for a major iPhone production ramp.

It's possible that Apple will eventually use the 32nm A5 in the iPhone 4S since it is likely that Apple will continue manufacturing those after the sixth-generation iPhone is launched.

Note that this is the same chip that is currently powering the Apple TV, albeit with one core disabled. A dual-core 32nm A5 chip that has one defective core can still be earmarked for use in the Apple TV. This practice is called "binning" in the semiconductor industry and results in greater yields (and thus lower costs).
