Would you complain if the car was better than adverstied?

Excuse me mr. salesman. This car has features and accessories I didn't ask for or pay for. I want the car I paid for. Not some better version.

Don't be so simplistic. What about, hey mr.salesman, the model I bought wasn't supposed to include mags. I bought a set thinking to I'd put them on, but here I find that they're already there. Guess what, the store won't let me return mine either. Well, looks like I'm SOL, sorry for complaining, I'll just bow my head, bendover, and move along like a good little consumer Mr. Businessman. I should just shut my mouth and be thankful everyday you're willing to take hardearned money from a little nothing like me.

I was going to buy a mini, but I don't want to buy it without the upgrade.

The 5400 is going to be the real speed pop, the 1.42 to 1.5 i think is marginal, so that is not really necessary. I think the VRAM will make SOME differance, but not much.

But, I don't want to buy it, EVEN GETTING WHAT IS LISTED ON THE BOX, and not getting the upgraded model,

so, apple has effected a delay in my purchase, could have helped them with the quarter.

So you were going to buy a 1.42GHz Mini with 4200RPM drive, but now that you might get a 1.5GHz Mini with 5200RPM drive as a bonus you are delaying your order?

Just wait a week or so for the new model to be officially listed on Apple's website if you want to be sure. Otherwise nothing has changed.

Err.

"Hi Apple, I bought 83MHz of processing power, and now you've included it by default!"

"Hi Apple, I bought a 32MB VRAM chip die ..."

"Hi Apple, I bought an external Firewire hard drive, and now ... oh wait, it is still a 60GB hard drive and I've got a 7200 RPM 250GB hard drive, and I bought it for the extra capacity anyway"

What idiot buys peripherals for a system before buying the system anyway? That makes no sense.

Stop making up ABSURD complaints.

"bought it for the extra capacity"... I love it when people sound so confident when they obviously are just pulling comments out of their a--. If you'd read a little bit, you'd know that the slow HD is the single biggest thing choking off the mini's performance, the extra capacity would just be a side benefit of a FW drive.

And yeah, that sure does sound crazy buying things like RAM or other add-ons before the computer arrives. Maybe some of us are on tight schedules, and maybe some of us buy online and therefore it makes sense to buy in advance so you're not left using a suboptimum system while you're waiting for your order to arrive. Really INSANE stuff! Part of the reason manufacturers make specs available is just so people can plan purchases AHEAD of time.

All this buzz, this complain, just don't make any sense!!!

C'mom, guys, just stop acting like and old lady and wait a few days to buy the renewed version of the Mini.

This is simple to solve.

Save some "compaint ammo" for later... Oh, why don't you point your guns to the lack of powerbooks upgrade???

Let me help:
Oh Steve you creep! Upgrade the Powerbooks now, you sadistic!!!

at first, I thought maybe APPLE had trouble getting newly printed boxes, and was using older ones.
Not so:
----
Sources have informed Think Secret that Mac mini box labels will continue to list the older specifications with no indication of whether the newer or older systems are contained within. The motivation behind this is to help clear current inventory without lowering prices.
You will either get a mini "equal to" or "better than" whats listed on the box.
----
Well, im not sure this scheme shows respect for their customers-making them play 'russian roulette'

Obviously, most every one will want the updated model, but APPLE is playing a shell game to get rid of old stock at regualr prices.

not cool.

You said it! I'll add that I cannot, for the life of me, remember the last time that I checked the specs on a shipping box.. I only cared about what was inside the box, and I certainly would not complain if the product exceeded what I thought I was buying!

I still don't get why you are complaining.

They don't promise X and deliver X-, they promise X and may deliver X+.

It says on the website and the box that it's 1.42 GHz, 32MB VRAM, 4x Superdrive, and that's what you should expect to get if you order.

If you want to gamble on getting an updated Mac Mini, don't be disappointed if you get the current spec. If you gamble, you have to accept you may lose. Don't bitch if you lose.

As for people delaying ordering until the new specs are announced, that's what happens BEFORE EVERY REVISION.

The clown below must be guiding all the complainers in this forum...again, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO GET WHAT IS ADVERTISED, so if you don't like it, don't buy it...I have never seen so much crap in one topic:

"Stephen Baker, who follows the retail PC market for NPD Techworld, called the move "highly unusual," saying that meaningful changes to a computer's hardware specifications typically are designated by a new part number.
Not adding one could irritate some retailers and even cause headaches for Apple in its own retail stores, Baker said. Customers who end up with only the advertised specifications may decide to return their product, knowing that better models exist."

Source: the CNET article linked in a post above.

Look at this pearl: "Customers who end up with 'only' the advertised specifications may decide to return their product, knowing that better models exist."

ONLY THE ADVERTISED SPECS? HUH?

Mr. Baker, stop smoking crack with our fellow whining ladies and get a clue, please...unless the return policy specifically allows for that, NO ONE, NO ONE, NO ONE has the right to get a better Mini, wherever you are in the globe...WAKE UP MAN!

Here, another car analogy, just what you wanted...

You and a friend go into a car dealer together, buy the exact same car feature for feature and pay the same price. As you leave you notice your friend's car has nicer rims, xenon headlamps, leather seats and a sunroof. What's your first reaction? Be honest now. Is it...

A) I'm so happy for you! [High five]

-or-

B) Son of a bitch! [Run back in to yell at salesperson]

Wow! You need to calm down.

"Some Mac Mini systems may contain components that slightly exceed the published specifications," Apple said in a statement. "There are no changes to the published specifications or part numbers."

- This is Apple's comment on the matter. Sounds like they are in for the long haul on this. It could be weeks or months.

Industry watchers were confounded by Apple's decision not to explicitly label the upgraded models.

"It doesn't make sense to me why they would do this," said Technology Business Research analyst Tim Deal, who added that Apple's tactic creates something akin to a "grab bag."

- It's not just those of us posting on the messageboards. The PC and electronics industry feels this is not only highly unusual but a really bad move as well.

"Most retailers are pretty careful to make sure that what's on the box is what's inside and that the customer gets what they believe they are buying," Baker said. "It's a measure of trust. Whether it's better or worse isn't even necessarily the issue."

Now of course I'm not going to risk buying one now and I'm sure many others will not either. Why would anyone who knows about this buy one now? I'll wait but this could go on for months or even until the Intel versions are ready. There's no way of knowing.

I would say "son of a bitch" but still how could I complain if what I bought was as advertised? Where's this overwhelming sense of entitlement that so many of you have coming from?

This isn't even like taking part in a blind auction - the specs are open, if you buy and are really lucky, you get an upgraded machine a week or two early.

If you don't want to risk it, wait.

Who's getting screwed? Not those who get the updated machines, not those who get what's advertised.

Please, no ,more car analogies! We are talking about a $400-700, bottom of the product line, computer... We are talking about slight hardware and performance increases..

Cars may get updates every couple years (some a lot longer than that), computer makers such as Dell, HP, and IBM have minor updates to their product lines constantly!

I'll give you this, I think it is a little crappy the way that Apple is handling this, but nobody is getting short sold, they are getting exactly what is listed on their website or better. Not worse. I understand your analogy, but it is now public knowlege that Apple has an update coming out and if people are going to get this wrapped around the axle about some minor upgrades, they really just need to wait until Apple officially starts selling the updated mini...

lottery

i see it as a temporary lottery

if you dont get the updated version dont start yapping... you got what you paid for... if you got an updated version... good for you, youre lucky

but I guess MOST of us will just wait out the official upgrade and buy one then

no need to risk my money right now, I mean why would I fork out 600 bucks for something thats going to be worth 500 in a couple of weeks?

or maybe less!!!!!!

no sense at all from apple's part

stupid stupid stupid

It still isn't as if you won't still be able to use the extra Firewire drive you purchased is it? It won't annihilate the Mac Mini in a big anti-matter explosion simply because the Mac Mini now has a 5200 RPM hard drive. I'd say that capacity was a far more important reason for buying an external Firewire hard drive, but maybe there are a few people that must boot their Mac Mini from one and have completely disabled the internal one ...

At the very worst you've not lost any money over what you were going to get originally. I fail to see what the whole issue is!

I have a mental image of you with a throbbing vein on the side of your forehead right now

As one of the ladies, I don't see why you should get all worked up if we who are potential mini buyers are upset with Apple's moves in this matter. I mean if it doesn't bother you, that's fine, go ahead and roll the dice. Who am I to get in the way of you assuming the position and letting S.Jobs have his way with you. I've often wondered why people called mac owners like myself lemmings, and now I'm starting to get an inkling. We've got to tow the party line it seems, just happily accept whatever Apple deigns to throw our way, even the introduction of this mini 'shuffle' (remember, the randomness is a feature, not a defect :D )

What the person who got the lesser car should have realized right away, he failed negotiations 101.

C) I am an idiot and do not know how to negotiate

or better yet he a total losser...

D) The sales person must have liked my friend more (he is cuter than me)

Cars are a bad example because it all comes down to the negotiations and how many cars they need to move that month to pay thier mortgage.

By the way, Car companies update car features all the time and add improvements through out the model yr and do not change the model number or price. So what apple is doing is no different. The only way to know about the difference is to know the serial number

LOL! Funny analogy, but I don't think someone has been able to make one comparable to a what's going on with the mini. Take the price of the nicer rims, the xenon headlamps the leather seats and the sunroof and you could be talking about more than $3000 dollars of better equipment on your friend's car. That's a hell of a lot of money (and difference) to complain over. You can't see it as a percentage of the whole price, because money is money. If I have $100 dollars and give you 60%, and you have $1000 dollars and give me 60%. Guess who has more money...

The car analogy would work probably if one car's motor performed with 142 hp and the other with 150 hp. The person driving wouldn't notice, only a true professional driver or geek. That would be in terms in performance. The other things (video ram, higher RPM hard drive) can't compare to a car-car situation, so I suggest to drop those analogies.

Now for a more real-life situation. Imagine you and your friend buy each a Mac mini at the same store from the same retailer. Go and tell them about the mistake. I'm pretty sure they'll be more than glad to give your friend a Mac with the same specs as yours if that'll make you happy, but not the other way around. Your friend will truly love you for this.

I like the one response to the article:

So Apple delivers some machines that surpass the promised specs at the promised price and people are whining about it?

I do think Apple could have handled this better, but that being said I just can't bring myself to agree with some of the complainers on here since some of them sound so ridiculous. :p

Has anyone tried calling Apple to see if they will ship an updated mini versus the older mini if you ask? I may try this later today when I have time...

Ok You hit it right on the head, so many people feel they are entitled to what everyone else has or got.

As a friend once said, "why not just cover it all with communist peanut butter and make eveyone less happy. God help us if some has Jif"

Ditto. Knowing what you know you can wait until the upgrade is formally released and buy then. If anything people should be thankfull they are getting a better machine than they paid for...
