Apple effectively writing off older models is getting seriously irritating. First off if you have an Apple Watch but your iPhone is too old you can't update it then when your Apple Watch is a little too old they start taking features away from it.....it is absolutely ridiculous. Latest one I noticed was the removal of the ability to pay with an Apple Watch when you are logged on your iMac. You could click on Apple Pay and it would chime on your watch and you were good. Now I can't.
What's funny to me is the jet black iPhone 7+ being too old to pair with the first matching Apple Watch, jet black Series 10

Phew, luckily I recently cashed in a $50 trade in value for mine

IS it only me who thinks that Apple is real good at making perfectly good hardware obsolete? for a company that constantly talks about the environment, they contribute significantly via this practice to electronic waste and environmental manufacturing pollution to replace "obsolete" hardware.

Nonsense. Apple is one of the leaders in (a) responsible manufacturing, and (b) effective recycling programs. There should be no such thing as "electronic waste". You can walk into any Apple store to have your old electronics recycled responsibly. No electronics should ever be tossed into the waste bin, ever. Anyone doing that is the one being irresponsible, not Apple.

Here in my Canadian province, we don't have many Apple stores, but we have recycling depots that accept all forms of electronics and appliances, totally free and no questions asked. It's a province-wide program. No electronics should ever be tossed into the garbage. Sends shivers down my spine to think people still do that!

Computer technology evolves. These are not your calculators or microwaves that have "firmware-based" functionality that never needs to be changed. Computers, or smart watches, are constantly receiving new features, and that sometimes requires corresponding hardware upgrades.

I still have mines with cellular data i got it when it first came out the screen have a crack in it i was gonna get it repaired awhile back but apple was charging over 200 to fix it so i said f it it still works anyway

Was a great watch, worked like the day I got it until the end. Took it to Apple for recycling and got the Ultra 2, which I also plan to keep for 5-7 years.

Have 6 releases broght exponential improvements?.
Lets see:
Same "full day battery".
A few millimeters larger screen
Always-on screen
Blood pressure sensors?. Nope.
Blood sugar sensors?. Nope.
Huge performance improvements in user experience?. Nope.
New ways to interact with the watch?. Yes, sensing the wrist to identify a "virtual" click.
Following Apple working way, what do you think will bring Watch 16?. 1.5mm larger screen?, real 1 day battery?. If marginal improvements keep comming, a Watch 10 might easily last 6 years without needing to "upgrade".

Wow,
Went to the apple store today to replace the battery and they told me the series 4 was not supported which surprised me, as I did not see it on any vintage list...
I was hoping to get another 3 years out of the watch with a new battery...
Now I read this news. crap timing I guess..

A well, will have to use it with the current state of battery then. Maybe order an ifixit kit down the line.
Still does everything I need and I track stuff 3-4 times a week. Only problem is the short battery life. Getting worried I may not be able to track a full day of skiing this year with 74% battery health.

Huh??? One has nothing to do with the other.

So two more years before my Series 6 is considered "vintage"? 😂
That’s about right. The Series 5 and 6 have another year left in them, but ultimately they need to be phased out. Apple’s stupid insistence on supporting significantly weaker hardware holds back the development of better software. I wish they would kill these things a bit sooner.

I'm still wearing my Series 4 every day. 82% battery health remaining. :)
91% for me. I wish my iPhone SE battery (or it's replacement) had been as good as my Series 4.

Edit: It wasn't until I got the watch that I realized just how bad my iPhone had gotten, as people were complaining about the watch's short battery life, yet it was outlasting my in-standby iPhone.
