Shame. mine had a much better run, and outlived my s6 in terms of useful battery life.

edit:
that said, expecting more than 5 years out of a high tech device is being pretty optimistic. this had a good run.

That’s about right. The Series 5 and 6 have another year left in them, but ultimately they need to be phased out. Apple’s stupid insistence on supporting significantly weaker hardware holds back the development of better software. I wish they would kill these things a bit sooner.
Honestly, the CPU differences between models seem pretty underwhelming and shouldn't be limiting anything. The Series 4 appears to have 16 GB memory which was increased to 32 with the Series 5, which could explain this cutoff, as their CPUs were pretty much only different in name, IIRC, and my Series 4 still functions well. The only major jump currently is in the Ultra 2 with 64 GB, so the earlier generations shouldn't be holding anything back CPU wise that isn't exactly as Apple intends. There is no reason the other additional hardware features of the watches themselves should hold back the software, either, so it isn't like Apple would add suddenly more features than they already intended.

It’s technology. A 2 year old computer is considered old and out of date…. Let alone a 7 year old one.
In the 1980 and 90's yeah, but these days, more often than not the computers are waiting on the user.

I'm typing this on my 2020 Air M1 even though I've got a MacBook Pro M3 Pro sitting in a case in the same room. It is overkill for surfing the net.

Because it stops receiving updates, new apps stop working. After that, you find the newest IOS on your phone can't talk to the watch. And worst of all, Apple stops making repair parts.

Think about those who thought they would make a mint by buying a first-generation solid gold watch. Rather than a valuable antique, they now have e-waste that can not legally be dumped in the trash.
Speculation doesn't always work out well. Dumping gold in the trash is always a fail, though.

I'm typing this on a 2012 iMac 27" Core i7 22nm that I am intending to replace with a

- $950 2022 Studio Display 27" 5K
- $499 2024 Mac mini M4 3nm 16GB 256GB

This is a better deal than any possible $1799 iMac 27" 5K base model if one were to be offered with a 3nm M4 16GB 256GB.

I intend to keep this 2025 setup until 2035 then upgrade to a 0.5nm M14 chip.

Yes. Yes they do. Anyways, I guess that makes sense for the 4 but I’m wondering how they will handle the 6-8 since they are all three essentially the same watch minus a sensor or two and slightly bigger screens.
Interesting? In the tech world that’s ancient. 5 years is a bachelors degree working on a masters. 5 years was BEFORE the pandemic. That just seems like such a long time to me. But I think the longest I’ve gone between upgrades has been 2 years so I’m a weirdo like that

Oh well though. People with older watches don’t have theirs burst into flames or anything from Apple stopping support. They can still use them as long as they want

It was a good watch though it was lacking always on display. Expecting series 5 to be added to the list around same time next year.

Yeah I really don't know anyone that updates there stuff at that clip other than their phones, and even that is getting rarer for me to see nowadays. 5 years for a watch that cost $400+ is nuts. I suspect since the watch has matured since S4, S5, that the generations after will last 6-7 years of OS updates like Macs, iPads, iPhones, etc going forward but of course thats up to Apple if they want to obsolete things prematurely.

Still rocking my Series 3 which was released in late 2017. I really appreciate long-lasting tools; I also take a bit of pride in how long I can make use of them. If tech didn’t significantly improve I’d be happy using all my devices permanently.

Does that mean, when I get battery service, they will ship me the next most recent Apple Watch??
lol no. Vintage just means repair will be done only for limited parts. If they don’t have your part or watch they’ll reject your repair. Obviously all repairs are at your expense.

After 7 years they will reject repairs all together.

I’m still rocking my SS bought on launch day. Screen is still pristine and battery is at 73% which is pretty darn good after 6 years of daily use. I’m going for the Ultra when the right deal pops up!

Anyone else thinks 5 years is a bit quick nowadays?

Remember Apple Watch is a digital, rechargeable watch. It's lifeline dictated not only on SoC, but also battery health. While 5 years is a short time for a wristwatch, the battery is probably dying lots sooner than that.

I always say I want to keep my watch for as long as possible. Then a new one comes out and I find some reason to buy it. I need an intervention.

I think we might actually be hitting a peak for most things though. Watched, iPads, iPhones. They all feel pretty much the same. Upgrades are smaller every year. Hell this years iPhone was “Apple intelligence!” Which is a feature it didn’t even get at launch and the 15 pro gets anyway.

If I can make it 3 years with my series 10 watch, I’ll be proud of myself

Naw I know people that used the S3 for 6+ years just fine until the battery went on that.

I am still on my Series 4 and I don't see a single reason to upgrade. Apple made micro updates the last 7 years and nobody needs more than this beautiful watch from 2018. It's also by far the best looking of all smart watches.

Maybe it’s just me, but I remember when companies would only support their products for a year maybe two. Five years sounds great. Does anybody actually keep their devices for longer than that? That’s like from 2019 until now.

Edit: these “disagree” reaction are so funny. Yes. Reality here. 5 years is a good run with any modern device and even then, you can keep it longer. You’re not forced to buy anything. But the simple fact is yeah…5 years is quite awhile. Disagree all you want
A five year lifespan for a tech gadget should be the minimum if we hope to do anything to slow climate change. You could get way more out of our devices if you could repair them for longer. Reality has a way of biting you on the ass if you don’t keep your eyes up.

Apple is not extending support, it is shortening it with yearly discontinuations, increased parts pairing and gatekept OS updates. We should be moving from a yearly throwaway cycle to a keep, repair and upgrade parts model.

The newly elected us president thinks climate change is a Chinese made hoax. Climate change wasn’t even a topic during the elections. People are more wasteful than ever despite people trying to sound the alarm for decades.

I remember watching Al gore’s an inconvenient truth when I was younger. We have made startlingly small progress in that time to the point we reached the tipping point of no return I believe just a few years ago. Or maybe I’m wording that wrong.

The general population doesn’t care. Apple pretends to care for image. I am completely cynical about any future in which we address this issue so yes while it would be nice if Apple supporter products forever, they won’t. The rest of society doesn’t care either.

Bought my S4 in the refurb store right about the time the S5 came out. Still wearing it everyday and battery health is not an issue. S4 is connected to my iPhone 12 mini and I don't plan to update that until 2026. Watch replacement in 2025 seems likely.

I’m still using my series 4 every day. Too bad apple slowed down the performance a few years ago. Takes 5-8 seconds just to open any app on the watch

Apple realized how luxurious Stainless Steel Space Black Series 4 is, ever since it became exclusive to Hermès.
People who don't know would think titanium is the same, but it's not.
