When I bought my (rMBP) 256GB SSD from ebay there were some 768s at around £650. That's half of Apple's price in the UK (or less if you factor in that you part exchange the HDD). Personally I still consider that way too expensive, and looking at the price of smaller capacity drives, I'm sure the going rate will drop further very quickly.

Current 512 rate seems to be around £360 at the moment.

Yeah, the saving is is not as big in the US than it would be for me in the UK - where Apple's SSD prices are even higher.

I don't suppose anyone has found a reasonable source for some VHB tape in Canada? I haven't found any online, and places like Home Depot and Rona only seem to carry garden variety double sided tape.

Have you tried Staples? Via Ebay you can obtain the 3M 4926 VHB tape which was posted in this thread earlier. I believe the seller will ship to Canada on request.

NAPA Autoparts has a good selection, or try Part Source.

Sears has it according to their web site ... don't know if you have any Sears near you in Canada however. Some Amazon vendors also have it, but a lot of them only have very large quantities available for $$$.

I've ordered the 27" with the 1TB fusion drive. I was going to open the machine to replace the hard disk with a SSD as I was under the impressions that it was 5400rpm however I've seen some reports that the 27" has a 7200 drive as part of the fusion drive.

I cant find any tech specs. Could anyone who knows for sure or has opened their machine confirm?:)

The 21.5" uses a 5400rpm 2.5" drive and the 27" has enough space inside to fit a 7200rpm 3.5" drive.

Go to:
http://www.apple.com/uk/imac/specs/

Scroll down to the storage sections and it shows for the 27 inch "1TB (7200-rpm) hard drive"

And for the 21.5 inch it shows "1TB (5400-rpm) hard drive"

Thanks, yes I know but I didn't order the 1TB drive which specifically mentions 7200rpm. They don't mention the speed of the spinning hard drive as part of the fusion drive and since there is likely to be a lot of background operations going on moving data back and forth, it possible they used a 5400 to reduce noise. I'd just like to know for sure so I can order the 840 pro.

I have 1TB Fusion and the spinning disk is a Seagate, 7200rpm, ST1000DM003. The flash part is a Samsung, SM128E.

The Fusion Drive is 128GB flash storage installed in the iMac along with the traditional 7200 rpm 1GB hard drive, for the 27 inch iMac.

Has anyone had any luck adding a 256 GB blade SSD to the iMac and setting up a fusion drive?

I'm considering doing this, but also partitioning the SSD so it'll house boot camp too

(partial take apart guide from Apple)
PDF of the tools Apple uses, as well as part number and procedure for display removal and reapplying adhesive.

I noticed in the guide above (thanks for that!) that the PSU is a 300w unit. Does anyone have an idea as to whether it would drive some of the more thirsty drives e.g. a blade SSD and an OWC Viper 2tb 3.5 sata3 (obviously these aren't available yet, but 300w for the whole system seems a bit meagre). Could it be that Apple have given just enough juice for the configurable options with little or no headroom for these mods (bear in mind fully utilised usb3 ports and thunderbolt bus power at the same time)?

Be careful, if you look at the parts drawing http://www.scribd.com/doc/118836055/2012iMac

The hard disk cable attachment is different for "units w/o HDD"

That is the same HD power/data cable (923-0312) another poster sent me.

But .... what is the "Mechanism" which has different part # for units with and without HDD? I can't tell if it is a mounting bracket, or an electronic part.

I haven't found a source for the cable yet.
Guess I will also need a different "Mechanism" as well.

Thanks for pointing that out. :)

the mechanism is the bracket piece that essential holds the iMac stand and helps distribute the weight. so it may be that a sturdier/tougher mechanism is necessary for the stand/back housing.

Formerly, the mechanism would be what would hold a VESA mount adapter on previous iMacs

So, I may not need that if I am just adding another lightweight SSD drive in there? I can simply "velcro" the drive in place if necessary.

Perhaps the only difference in the "Mechanism" is the tension of a spring or something to maintain the balance point with a hard disk in there.
