Dear god, if there’s one thing I absolute DO NOT WANT it’s “deep AI integration” into my car, the thing in my life I need to absolutely, positively, always have, without a doubt, work and do exactly what I want it to do every single time
His reasoning: “Since CarPlay will be obsolete in the future, we will not offer it today.”His reasoning is not even valid. CarPlay doesn’t have to take over every pixel. There are plenty of cars that implement CarPlay next to their own interface.
People who buy a Rivian or Tesla maybe, but they’re already decided on their car, it’s a biased sampls. The majority of the cars on the road support carplay, and most people seem to want that - hence ford’s comments about keeping it recently, and the backlash to GM’s phase out on their EVs (though notably *not* on the majority of their vehicles, their ICE vehicles all still have carplay AFAIK, seems like they’re using their limited EV market as beta testers for what is, so far, an abysmally poor option)I am reading the opposite, people seem to like the Rivian and Tesla option...but they want choice even more.
That's not even possible. No one can integrate with iMessage. This is an obvious lie from every automaker who states it.Instead, Rivian prefers to offer its own interface with "end-to-end integration."
That number will increase enormously once they get R2 production going, which should be imminent. The longer term is of course completely unknown.Rivian sells 50,000 vehicles a year. They are also expensive and unreliable.
Another self-serving quote. We will never purchase a vehicle that does not support CarPlay.Read- we want to sell your data
They sell 0.2% of vehicles.
Totally agreeCarPlay support is literally my number one factor for buying a vehicle. No CarPlay, no buy. What an out of touch CEO.
Yeah wait until potential customers find out that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not supported. It will be a deal breaker for so many for all of the resons stated in this thread. That number will increase enormously once they get R2 production going, which should be imminent. The longer term is of course completely unknown.
My Audi has a great interface, and I often prefer its nav guidance because of the beautiful, informative graphics that are mirrored in the HUD and thus more useful than on-dash AppleMaps when on unfamiliar roads. That said, the Audi system is limited and can't play programming from favorite iOS apps (e.g., 91.5 WBEZ for Chicago's NPR, podcasts, 92.9 WLDF "The Torch"). Maybe Tesla can, but I will never know.Well when the vehicles own system works well and has the functions people want, it decreases the desire for Carplay.
That is why a lot of Tesla owners are happy without it including myself. My Model 3 has Apple Music, so I am good there, the integrated navigation works great, and the UI works well. The car has everything I want and need built in.
Carplay shines when the cars own system sucks. Rivian is right there with Tesla on how their system works and setup( aka well). Do it right, and people won't desire Carplay.
This guy needs to learn how to communicate clearly rather than in corporatespeak"a lot of that will be now completely reshaped into a world where it will become an agentic integration that presents itself into a wholesome user experience to the user"
Bensaid has a point. I wanted Apple CarPlay in my other cars because their infotainment systems were vastly different from one maker to the next and the quality was generally poor regardless of auto manufacturer. Lack of CarPlay kept me on the sidelines from Tesla for a while, but with FSD improving, I held my nose and got one anyway. And honestly, the only thing I miss from CarPlay is having Waze for my map/navigation versus the Tesla map. Everything else has a 'good enough' substitute in the Tesla system--Apple Music (or Spotify, etc.), Podcasts, calendar, text messages, phone, etc.
On the latest episode of The Verge's Decoder podcast, Rivian's software chief Wassym Bensaid explained why the EV maker still refuses to offer Apple CarPlay.

In short, Bensaid said Rivian does not want CarPlay to fully take over the software experience.
"The challenge with screen mirroring solutions is that they take over every single pixel in the car," he said.
Instead, Rivian prefers to offer its own interface with "end-to-end integration."
Bensaid added that "deep AI integration into the car" will eventually make the debate over offering CarPlay in vehicles "completely obsolete." He believes that Rivian owners will be able to access the core functionality of many apps through an AI agent, rather than needing to rely on CarPlay or Android Auto.
"I really believe that the way you interact with apps which are mono-threaded, single buttons, single icons, a lot of that will be now completely reshaped into a world where it will become an agentic integration that presents itself into a wholesome user experience to the user," Bensaid explained. However, he admitted that an AI agent becoming an "alternative solution" to CarPlay apps will take time to materialize.
Already, Rivian owners are increasingly less interested in CarPlay, according to Bensaid. He said that Rivian's internal statistics showed that more than 70% of customers wanted CarPlay when their vehicles first launched around five years ago, but he said a recent survey showed that figure is apparently less than 25% now.
"With the level of features that we have shipped to customers, with the level of end-to-end integration, with the level of convenience that we are bringing, CarPlay is, or Android Auto to that extent, is no longer the topic of discussion," he said.

Navigation is a big thing for me too. My car has a heads up display and I love the fact that it’ll show my navigation right there… but only if I’m using the car’s built in navigation. And my complaint about that is it’s just not as good as Apple’s. Its phrases are clearly Japanese translated to English and its steps just aren’t as clear. So I sacrifice having navigation on my heads up display in favor of better navigation. For me, the crucial thing about Carplay is navigation, specifically, using my phone to hit an address link or search on Google Maps and then have it show up on my car screen. Dealing with navigation on the actual dash screen has always been archaic in comparison.
Not Rivian, but electric vehicle companies like Fisker and Nikola did. Rivian's stock market value crashed by 90% at some point, but then they made some deals that kept them afloat, including with Amazon to make their delilvery vans, and Volkswagen invested billions to share technology with them.Bruh.. I thought Rivian went bankrupt lol.
