Two tips to run ML smooth:

1.- Auto-hide the dock
2.- Change the "display as" of your documents & downloads dock folders from "stack" to "folder".

Now my base rmbp runs spaces and mission control smooth !!

That's not true. I've returned things before with the student discount. You still have to do it within 14 days though.

I've tried to return it through the official internet-based procedure....they didn't allow me to proceed.....

I think it's really, really smooth. I switching spaces, scrolling, zooming on webpages, and every other UI element seem to be running flawlessly.

This. we discovered in the other thread by working together, now if someone can figure out why the calendar month switching animation is so laggy that would be golden!

quoted for truth! this makes mountain lion extremely smooth on my rmbp :)

Ah, so the $3-4k rMBP on ML can be rigged to not lag in one situation by disabling a feature. Lovely. SMH...

It's a bug in the Intel GPU drivers causing the CPU to stall while it waits for results from the GPU. Using the discrete card should alleviate that.

I think the problem is people are trying to run disply setting more than 1440x900 which it says best for retina. I have not upgraded yet to ML but Lion runs smooth at 1440x900 settings. I have the base rMBP. Run your setting at 1440x900 and I bet the lag will go away. Run it higher and the setting tell you it's not best for retina. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Resolution seems to have nothing to do with it. It's almost as if programs are purposely lagging when it detects a rMBP.

There's shouldn't be any lag at all at native 2880x1800, but it's still there in certain programs.

He's right, you CAN return it even if you bought it with student discount. I just did. ML didn't fix much for me, and I returned it within the 14 day period.

Using Discrete card on base model runs a lot more smoother. Not sure if Intel 4000 can't handle the resolution or it is just a bug...Hope it is a bug because battery drains a lot faster by running discrete card at all times...

Same....
I've a macbook pro retina 2.7 16GB, i.e. the fastest you can buy.

On the other hand safari is way better on ML...but seriously the UI lag on ML IS in some cases worse than L....

the only thing that comfort me is that the lag is evidently a software optimization issue since now safari is way faster and it uses only the integrated intel chip....

It seems that I've to wait more and more to have my >3000$ pc working as expected.....veeeeeeery disappointed!!

A new safari was released at the launch of ML. Did you also check Safari 6 on Lion?

I was able to do step #1 but cannot find where to do step #2.

Spending over $2000 on this machine, we shouldn't have to put up with these kind of UI lags. Does Apple not test their softwares on the rMBP before releasing them?

Have you tried calling Apple? I think you'd have success if you spoke to customer service.

I did. They continue to say that they are sorry, that they will solve the problem asap, etc. They also asked a video to see the problem with their eyes.

The point is that except for this lag issue, the computer is nothing less that a power champion and I want it. BUT the UI lag IS extremely annoying in general and I think it is UNACCEPTABLE on a >3000$ computer.

Come on! I bought the most expensive pc on earth and the user experience is less smooth than my previous 2009 MBP 13" base model?!?!?!

I totally agree with you!!!!

Listen...In my case...the UI lag IS present at the 1440x900 settings.....if I switch to 1900x1200 the lag is embarrassing to say the less...

Right-click on the documents or downloads dock folders and then you can choose between "stack" and "folder".

I thought you could return it without having to justify your decision... Ask them to provide you a formal document which state their reasons for not accepting the return, and then sue them...

Does AC warranty covers HW and/or SW lags? :p

I think Apple will have to offer a discount to all affected rMBP owners in the next retina revision...

I can't...I bought it using the student discount.....I discovered after purchase that this means that you cannot return the product if you don't like it....

100% incorrect. Don't know where you "discovered" this, but it is wrong. You have the exact same return options as if it were purchased full price.

every identical rmbp machine screen perfomrs completely different and nobody knows why. ive seen videos of two identical configurations. one stutters like crazy and the other looks like a classic. mystery. id like to see in a few months someone get to the bottom of it..

Looked for such videos, but didn't find any.. I'd be interested to see one..

Fry-man is correct. I had to return a rMBP that I purchsed on a government discount. When you called Apple, and they said that they were trying to resolve the issue, did they tell you that they would not accept a return or exchange?
