I don't really consider it "losing money." My money is gone as soon as I pay the CC company. It's not like it's an investment where I'm hoping for a return. It's a purchase, which typically are in valuation free-fall the moment you use it.

Instead I think of my Mac purchases as self-financed leases. My goal is to spend $25-35/month on each computer I own, depending on their capabilities. And that is about what they cost me after I've sold them after a year. The key is to sell them just before a new model is announced. After that it's cheaper to keep them for another year b/c the big resale value hit comes right when the new model is released, then stabilizes until the next speed bump is announced.

Well, maybe you need a better CC company. I can tell you from my own experience that American Express's service is fantastic. All I had to do was tell them when I bought the item and they looked it up. I had the choice of using their repair service and they'd send me a box or I could use mine and they'd reimburse me after I faxed them a copy of the repair bill. I also had to charge the repair to my AMEX. No headache at all, and I still had $300 in my wallet.

1.) Where do you sell them?

2.)What you do in that in between time, when you need to use a computer?

Since i bought mine at best buy(they did match the student price) i'm buying the best buy laptop warranty plan. 350$ for three yrs, covers Spills and drops.

I didn't buy AppleCare yet, but that is only because if I did, I wouldn't have had enough cash leftover to pay my phone and fuel bills. I completely intend on purchasing it some time in the next month or two though, as you have up to a year from the purchase date of your mac to buy AppleCare.

Exactly. I bought my (now sold) MBA last September. If I'd kept it, I'd have gone for AppleCare in August, but buying it at the time would be spending money I might not get back when I resold it. Instead the friend I sold it to has the choice to get it or not, with no impact on my wallet.

And who knows? There might be a "gotta have" change on the next refresh! :D

as a student i get applecare for £50 ($77), so it was an easy decision.

'Applecare' for a student isn't really retired, unless you need telephone support. Whilst it's probably good to have, you get 3 years hardware warranty included when you buy through university. I'm not sure the same applies in college.

Woah, woah, woah, are you telling me I've just spent £50 on free phone support? Like i need phone support!? I'm at uni and bought while on my uni network. Why was it not free? Please help, i'm about to cancel my order!

EDIT: I've just checked through the terms of sale. it comes with 36 months care automatically. Im paying for telephone support. What a rip off! It doesn't make that clear through checkout. And when i tried to buy in store they wanted to charge me £177 for apple care! Very, very shifty. I shall be cancelling my order and reordering (using the money to upgrade the ram!). I do have to wait 2 more weeks for delivery though now. Apple <3

How do we view this terms as I chatted with someone on live chat and they said it is only 1 year of warranty for education students.

a definite yes for me for this rMBP model. In the past I have skipped it, but given that I am never even going to pop open the case of this guy, I think it's a must.

1. You can buy AppleCare on Amazon.com for $299 so FYI.
...and $244 at B&H which is frequently suggested.

I don't see why this Applecare question is any different from any other Applecare or extended warranty thread. Some will buy. Some will not. Same as it ever was.

Lol.It's really funny to see that people are cheap and avoid to pay apple care for 2500$+machine which is BTW 1st prototype of next generation MBP to come and all errors and flaws will be shown on this first generation. Not to mention everything is soldered on the motherboard and repairability is equal to zero (0).Not a very wise move my fellow nerd friends. If u ask me,i would rather choose slower procesor or less SSD storage and buy warranty instead if i'm short on money.

Use the hell out of it within the first year. If it doesn't show any signs of crapping out, you likely won't need Apple Care. The fact that it doesn't cover accidental damage makes it pretty worthless. Unless they're using low quality hardware, the hardware itself shouldn't start degrading for several years - and by then, your warranty would be up.

I'd never consider NOT buying applecare.

I've had my current laptop repaired 4 times and replaced (with a year newer model!) once already. I actually even extended the applecare on my replacement model to cover an extra year...I'm set until I graduate college with protection (at which point I'll hopefully be replacing it anyway).

What I've had happen to my computer would have basically cost me a whole new one in repair costs, had I not bought applecare

Yeah you definitely don't want to spend beyond your means

For me, it is my first Macbook, so I decided to get AC because of the sheer lack of user-repairable/replacable parts inside. I suspect iFixit will eventually be able to get some parts, but not all.

I have 2 Minis, an iMac and many others (see my sig). I have (had) AC on my iMac and it saved me when the hard drive went bad (ever seen iFixit's teardown? da*n!). I had AC on one of my Minis and the superdrive went out on that and it was fixed.

I just recently got the iPad 3rd Gen after having the iPad 1 and then the 2. On the iPads, I never got AC but since introducing AC+ for the 3rd gen that covers damage, I bought that.

Just curious ~ what kind of repairs were they? It is slightly disheartening to see someone require four repair.

That is the only reason I'd consider Applecare but as many said, often credit cards double your warranty. Historically MTTF is within the first year for computers which is why extended warranties are a money maker for companies. I've never bought a warranty for any computer system and that is over 20 years of buying systems.

No. I never buy AppleCare... or any ext. warranty for that matter. Many CCs extend the warranty by a year now if you purchase w/ that card. Also AppleCare for MBPs is around $300 discounted. I can sell my MBP this time next year for $500 under what I paid. $200 for the upgrades + $300 for additional year warranty (really two if you include my CCs extension). To me that's the better way to spend $300.

$500 under what you paid? You must be smoking your avatars peace pipe.

Had a green line appear (permanently) on my screen. Had the screen replaced.

Then an issue popped up where the screen would shut off at random. They replaced the screen again.

The third time, the green line was back. At that point, since it was 3 repairs on the same component, they just replaced the computer.

Then, the new computer needed a motherboard replacement for a freezing issue.

My 2011 MBP (purchased at a little under $3000, but that's because of a student discount), is worth around $1800-$1900 right now (I checked on an appraisal site.

So I doubt the $500 less is accurate

tell that to my logic board that died after 2 years in my ibook many years ago. and my display that died in my 2009 macbook pro. I'll take the applecare, but best of luck to you.

Don't need to get here as a UK student.

We get 15% education discount along with a free 3 year repair coverage warranty and 1 year phone support. (So basically Applecare without 3 years phone).

If it's still processing you could probably call up customer support to get Applecare removed.
