I find it hard to believe that there are displays out there with zero IR after marco test for the full 10 minutes. I may of course be wrong but I think the issue is the degree of IR which, apparently is worse on some units.
So does anyone have a unit that passed the 10 minute marco test with flying colors (i.e. not even the slightest trace of IR whatsoever)? Keep in mind that whole issue is complicated by the fact that not everyone's vision is the same!
Just ran two Marco tests (10 minutes, varying brightness) on my two rMini's both are 32GB Wifi Silver. I never have them on 100% brightness, my normal is around 50-60% brightness.
DQTL: This has a mostly uniform cooler screen with almost no yellowing (I mean maybe a TINY bit at the far edges, but nothing that would hamper using it).
100% brightness test - clearly shows image retention, no doubt about it. Took about 4 minutes leaving the gray screen on for the retention to disappear.
60% brightness - clearly show image retention. Took a little over 2 minutes leaving the gray screen on for it to disappear.
-----------------------
DLXL: This has a warmer screen (you can really see it with the white squares in the test being a subtle yellow compared to the other mini. It also has a very subtle darker yellow tint on the left side
100% brightness test - very subtle image retention in the test. Could only see it on the edges and just barely, but it was definitely there.
60% brightness - Unnoticeable. If it was there, I couldn't see it.
Trust me when I say my eyes can see all the issues. I already returned 2 Air's and 1 rMini because of either dead pixels or yellowing.
Honesty I can't imagine where I'm going to see the retention issue in normal usage (and haven't yet). If it ever becomes an issue, I'll just take it to Apple. I'm more happy that the screen is even and no yellowing!
Between the yellowing on the Air's and the yellowing/image retention on the rMini's I'm guessing that the real problem is the technology at scale. Because Apple needs to have literally millions and millions of these pumped out as quickly as possible, overall quality suffers to the point where some people don't notice, whereas others do.
I honestly don't see the overall quality improving unless the tech does as well when producing these things in such large quantities...or unless Apple loses all market share and the iPads become a high end luxury item.
