If it really obvious they will do a replacement, or make a case for it :D

In NYC, Apple replaced w/o hesitation. The guy was very apologetic and grabbed a manager saying this is "priority 1", let's find him a replacement because this is awful.

Looking through this thread you might be right. Does anyone with Wifi have IR?

Yes, 32GB Wifi Silver.

Just curious...what did you do to show him? Did you have to run the Marco test? Or were you seeing issues in real world usage?

Yes it was the marco test; however, I know from experience on a previously defective iPad that you can also see it easily in other apps with static elements (address/tool bar in Safari, eBay app grid system, etc). Pick any app with static UI and switch to a contrasting color app and you'll see retention.

Edit: Try setting iPad background to black. Use Safari for a bit with the address bar showing and then switch to home screen, you'll see the address bar on your background.

Thanks just curious. I'm keeping it for now.....the screen is uniform and I'm not in the mood to start going through more yellow tinted screens.

Received another att wifi mini with image retention after even a minute or 2. Same as the first one. Both dlxl. The one thing I do like is the screen is perfectly white, even, no backlight bleeding. As much as a prefer the higher color gamut on the air I can't seem to get one that is even. The first was pink toward the bottom. The second is more yellow.

Maybe I will just stick with this mini until there is proof the image retention causes a real world problem.

I tried the test on my Retina Mini and my Air. Both had no issues with image retention. My Air has extremely slight yellowing on the left (in portrait) and the Mini has extremely slight yellowing on the bottom (I exchanged my first Mini because of noticeable yellowing). Both are so slight that my wife doesn't see it and most of the time I don't either so they're keepers. :)

is your mini wifi or wifi +cellular. What are the first 4 of the serial?

Ok. New study then. Does anyone with a Space Grey Wifi model have IR? :D

Just got a Retina Mini (Space Grey 32GB LTE) today, and it's going back due to a scratched back cover.

Mine was a DLXL and failed the image retention test. I tried to do the Marco test and the screen actually has retention after just a few seconds. Quite brutal. It fades back to normal in just 10 seconds or so. It seems less "sticky" than on my iPad 3 where the retention would occur for up to 5 minutes.

So, I'm joining the lottery again...

What do you guys think about this screen?.
It's got image retention, however I'm planning on keeping it if that's not an issue under normal use - just wanted to check whether it looks good to you or not as I don't have any idea of what a bad one looks like:D.

Looks pretty much even, not perfectly even (tends to be a tad yellower towards the bottom but you have to be really really picky) but quite good to me. Whites look nice as far as I can see. No dead pixels.

On the left, my rMini, on the right, iPhone 5

Looks pretty damn even and white to me!

I'd keep it unless the image retention is an issue in real use.

whats the macro test?

Anyone with a cellular version NOT have IR? Mine has it but it's damn evenly white and no tinting just IR.

My mini didn't have any IR but my Air has very bad IR after just 5 minutes. Is it worth replacing it? Makes moving to 32gb just that much easier.

32GB LTE Grey, ordered online from Spain the past wednesday and arrived this monday (it left China on Friday! Amazingly it traveled the whole weekend).

I Thought that it would be a new fresh batch (it came directly from China), but it has IR with just two minutes of the test. Sharp screen (dlxl serial number). Low gamut, but no yellowish tint.

I got my Space Grey iPad mini 64gb+LTE yesterday. It had a very noticeable yellow tint in the bottom of the screen and it failed the image retention test too. It was a DLXL product. I will return it today. I am very disappointed. The yellow tint was so clear that I noticed it already from the "HELLO HOLA..." stage. Where is Apple's quality control? :(

I find it hard to believe that there are displays out there with zero IR after marco test for the full 10 minutes. I may of course be wrong but I think the issue is the degree of IR which, apparently is worse on some units.
So does anyone have a unit that passed the 10 minute marco test with flying colors (i.e. not even the slightest trace of IR whatsoever)? Keep in mind that whole issue is complicated by the fact that not everyone's vision is the same!

Can you elaborate what you mean when you say no issues? How long did you test? Do you have good vision? Did you look carefully?

Just ran two Marco tests (10 minutes, varying brightness) on my two rMini's both are 32GB Wifi Silver. I never have them on 100% brightness, my normal is around 50-60% brightness.

DQTL: This has a mostly uniform cooler screen with almost no yellowing (I mean maybe a TINY bit at the far edges, but nothing that would hamper using it).

100% brightness test - clearly shows image retention, no doubt about it. Took about 4 minutes leaving the gray screen on for the retention to disappear.

60% brightness - clearly show image retention. Took a little over 2 minutes leaving the gray screen on for it to disappear.

-----------------------

DLXL: This has a warmer screen (you can really see it with the white squares in the test being a subtle yellow compared to the other mini. It also has a very subtle darker yellow tint on the left side

100% brightness test - very subtle image retention in the test. Could only see it on the edges and just barely, but it was definitely there.

60% brightness - Unnoticeable. If it was there, I couldn't see it.

Trust me when I say my eyes can see all the issues. I already returned 2 Air's and 1 rMini because of either dead pixels or yellowing.

Honesty I can't imagine where I'm going to see the retention issue in normal usage (and haven't yet). If it ever becomes an issue, I'll just take it to Apple. I'm more happy that the screen is even and no yellowing!

Between the yellowing on the Air's and the yellowing/image retention on the rMini's I'm guessing that the real problem is the technology at scale. Because Apple needs to have literally millions and millions of these pumped out as quickly as possible, overall quality suffers to the point where some people don't notice, whereas others do.

I honestly don't see the overall quality improving unless the tech does as well when producing these things in such large quantities...or unless Apple loses all market share and the iPads become a high end luxury item.
