I fail to understand the resolution that these doorbells produce.
Given the IMPORTANCE of knowing who is stealing your mail, packages breaking into your door, robbing you or whatever WTH are is wrong with the resolution capabilities?

Yes, I expect that for the money they are charging, they AT LEAST provide Face Tracking, autofocus and 2K Video at a minimum. Some of the Next video's I have seen of thieves ripping packages off, could be a family member - and you couldn't tell by the lousy quality of the video.

There's two factors with the quality of recorded video... (1) what the camera can record, and (2) how that recorded video is transmitted and stored. Is it compressed when saved resulting in lower-than-recorded quality?

This is the first to use HomeKit Secure Video, and maybe the quality issues won't be an issue as a result? Time will tell.

Do insurance companies give a discount when customers use tech like this? If so, I bet that's how they are justifying the price.

Usually no discount on insurance.

It is more for your protection.
Mine makes a noise when it detect someone. The noise can be heard outside.

Also, for prosecution and mutual security. Ring has groups where people can share videos of people looking in their mailboxes, stealing packages off doorsteps, etc. People can see what car porch pirates are driving, what they look like, and if they do steal something, send the video to the police.

Hopefully the 5 people in the world that has this doorbell also has the homekit.

The odds of that are more than unlikely. I save monthly by having the cheapest internet service ($50/mo vs $75) and no subscription ($3+ a month). The math works for me. Plus I get HD and can add cameras where and how I like them.

They may seem unlikely, but those things can and do happen all the time. Thus the appeal of having off-prem storage.

Aside from the size and price, the PoE spec is what gives me hope that more competitors will see the need for wired security products. I just can’t find the strength to install a battery operated / WiFi only camera. I want wires!!!!

Macrumors - can y’all reach out to Netatmo to find out a release date on their doorbell. This is the one I’ve been waiting for but was supposed to be out last year....

Same here. It's been a year since its announcement. I know the company merged with Legrand and I have Legrand adorne dimmers and switches throughout my homes. I phoned the company a few times and they either didn't know about the merger and product line or had no information on its availability. I had two customer rep's inform me it should be around the $150-250USD range but we'll see.

Right on. Ours isn’t great at night but the 2k hikvision caught a meth addict stealing our $400 ssd drive off our porch. Posted it on facebook. In an hour and a half had a name. Forwarded it to police who tracked him down (homeless, bounces between 2 cities). About 6 months later they finally convicted him of our theft. The officer sat with him to wait for his court hearing. He looked down and saw his hat on the bench. And damn, it had the same color and logo on the bill as on the video. No we didn’t get our ssd or money back. Yeah I ended up giving $50 to the girl who identified him. But it was worth it. And I know what happened, when, and why.

You can get a Eufy doorbell cam for $120 right now on Amazon. It has 2K video and local storage so there is no subscription. The only downside is the Eufy doorbell cam is not currently homekit compatible. I was excited to read the headline on this story because I am wanting to replace my Ring doorbell with something Homekit Secure Video compatible but $664 USD (based on today's exchange rate) is a complete non-starter for me.

Eufy, by Anker (the guys who make all sorts of chargers, vacuums, etc), is amazing. I had a Ring Pro for 2 years and it died the beginning of December. I started doing some research. I was looking to not pay a monthly fee but still wanted a decent app and it to look nice on the wall. Found the Eufy. Decided to give it a try since it was on sale for $119. The thing is a million times more reliable than the Ring Pro. I was so impressed I actually decided to try one of those robot vacuums because they sold those as well. Love both!!!

Homekit would be nice, and god knows I have enough non-homekit things connected with homebridge, but on a doorbell I don't really need it I only want it.

720p is pathetic in 2020. Spend an extra $10 on hardware and up the price by $15 and put in a 1080p. Either way, this doorbell is only worth $200 max, and that is pushing it.

Exactly, I'm not mad about the price I'm mad about the poor camera specs, and no mention of HDR/backlight compensation. I'd be happier with a Homekit enabled doorbell with all the best tech out there at the moment and would pay a premium for it. Home security cameras are now 4K HDR, why can't my doorbell with prime location to the most used part of the home? The Ring's delay to notifying devices and even activating the in-home doorbell is annoying.

Reading the lone Amazon review with a pic of what the video actually looks like is embarrassing for Robin!

€599 is not the price for a complete set, standard this is an in wall doorbell, if that's the case you need a casing, when it's on the wall you also need a casing, so probably close to € 650 or higher.

Nearly $700 USD for a video doorbell? The folks at this company must be smoking some good stuff over there in Holland.

Plenty of that stuff here, fun fact, it's The Netherlands now with a new logo.

So true, you could buy two Apple branded USB cables for that much and still have enough change for a stick of chewing gum.

I don't like these internet cloud cameras because you are not in control of your own video, the underlying contracts with the FBI, and or the inability of who has access to your camera footage is questionable in my opinion. I like the abilty to view the video on my phone, but I don't want to share it with the world.

I still am looking for a device to port IP cam video to the internet, in a VPN format that I can stream to only my phone. Until I find such a hub/box/dongle that doesn't require a masters degree in IT to set up, then I will be in line to get one. I think the current offerings while good, aren't to the point of a must have item just yet.

so with respect to ring's pricing - are these police departments they are providing the video to paying them? whenever something is "free" or the price is low, usually whoever is selling it has some other way of monetizing the product. e.g. facebook.

while this doorbell is interesting to me, for now i've made my own doorbell from a dash button and a hikvision camera. has worked great for almost 2 years now.

Some things are kept you mainly due to price.

If we all trusted one another, one one would NEED to spy on other people steeling mail in the first place.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Eufy doorbell. I have already replaced my 2 Blink cameras with Eufy 2C cameras and I am VERY happy with them. I will probably go ahead and replace my Ring Doorbell Pro and my Ring Floodlight Cam with Eufy cameras in the very near future. I have emailed Eufy and they told me they are working on a new software feature to allow the Doorbell Cam to store video on a Homebase as a back up to only having it on the device itself (still no subscription, just a 2nd local storage option).

Not for me it isn't. This is what I have been waiting for. I would much rather pay a price upfront and budget for it than have continual ongoing subscription fees. I HATE SUBSCRIPTIONS!
As much as I usually bag Apple, the 2TB plan is $14.99 AUD which I consider too pricey. If it did come with the ability to store 5 camera feeds that don't count to storage then I can see where Apple is transitioning to services to make up for flat or falling phone sales. I would pay $14.99 AUD a month for 2TB of data and 5 video streams.

As for paying an upfront cost on the camera, this company does not have any overheads of ongoing bandwidth or servers to pay for, so $1000 AUD is a ridiculous price for a 720 sensor.
