it gets worse

- $115/month. 800 minutes + unlimited evenings/weekends, 2 GB Data, 300 SMS sent, unlimited incoming SMS

Wow. I pay US$110 (the US dollar and the Canadian dollar are about the same now anyway) a month for 700 minutes for TWO LINES (although the other line is not an iPhone) with unlimited nights and weekends, plus rollover, plus mobile to mobile, plus unlimited data & unlimited text on AT&T.

Rogers needs to CHILL OUT.

with US provders there is no such thing as long distance.. in vancouver it costs extra to call the suburbs of vancouver with your rogers phone... oh and voicemail is like $7 extra too

Time to understand how business works.

Canada is larger than the US, yet, we got approx 30 million people. For a few million users (maybe less), a cell phone carrier has to build one of the world's largest network to offer the same kind of coverage and quality. Imagine the cost to revenue ratio.

Absolutely, everyone should learn to understand how business works.

You should start out by understanding that the Canadian population is at least 20% higher than what you approximated.

Additionally, you should look at the Rogers coverage map, and get back to us on the size of that coverage, and the cost/revenue ratio.

I think you're giving Rogers (Who also has cable and video resources) too much credit.

Why?

It's just a phone. Right?

Expensive bugger too. Apple won't be getting my money until Rogers puts its costs in line.

s.

Hmm...here's an idea. How about every Canadian just not buy the iPhone. You don't need the gov. to intervene or Apple or anyone else. If no one buys the iPhone at those plan prices, then the price will come down. It's as simple as that.

Obviously I've been far more successful with correspondence than you guys have been with relying on laissez-faire ;)

Why would you wait for the free market to handle things when you can preempt it?

Well... makes me glad I decided against the iPhone... not that I don't like it.. I would LOVE to have one, but the prices are just ridiculous! Us Canadians got screwed big time.

Well, there goes my chance at getting the iPhone. I was hoping to sell my iPod touch for an iPhone so I can get internet access, maps, youtube, etc., almost everywhere I go. Thanks to these prices, I'll just keep my touch. Over $90 / month is absolutely insane. I can live with the spotty wi-fi coverage my touch is able to access, and keep my existing phone.

Oh well, there goes the dream. I hope people don’t buy these things so they’ll have no choice but to bring prices down. Absolute insanity!!!!

TBH this is nothing to complain over. The Norwegian provider of iPhone (Netcom) also just announced the pricing for 3 different plans.

- $80 - 100 minutes, 100 SMS, 100 MB Data
- $140 - 250 minutes, 250 SMS, 250 MB Data
- $220 - 1000 minutes, 1000 SMS, 1000MB Data

THIS IS A RIPOFF! You should be very happy that you don't live in Norway.. lol

.. and the early termination fee is $700 for the smallest plan :|

I just emailed Rogers about this, and I urge everybody to do the same. We all need to flood their inboxes about this and once that happens, I'm sure some of the suits upstairs will take notice. It may not change anything, but at least they'll know that we won't stand for this crap.

I sent the following email to Elizabeth Hamilton of Rogers. I had sent this email to the Financial Post and to Steve Jobs email address. (someone actually reads and responds to that address.)

Ms. Hamilton,

Here is an email I sent to the Financial Post here in Canada and Steve Jobs. I really hoped to upgrade to the 3G iPhone, but Rogers just does not get it.

Read the comments on the various Forums inhabited by people who are or would be your customers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All of us hoped that Rogers would recognize that the iPhone is a fully webified device and would price their plans accordingly. Their disclosed data plans show that nothing has changed.

On various technology forums that I subscribe to these plans are universally seen as bad.

The entry level plan with Caller ID, is $92.65/month and thats just with 150 voice minutes, nowhere near enough for even the most basic needs. Over the 3 years contract, this basic plan would cost the customer ($60 + $5.95 SAF) * 1.13 * 12 * 3 = $2682.85
On the lower end, why would someone get a 3G iPhone if all they can use is 400MB of Data? Its like having a Ferrari but you can't afford the gas, and you can only drive around the block 3 times a month.

On the plan that I need since my phone is the only phone I have, as I don't have a landline which is quite common now, it would be
$153.28 X 12 = $1840 x 3 = $5521.82
It would seem that the people that set pricing at Rogers never actually talk to a customer.

I very much doubt that I will be upgrading. I am an early adapter, and many like myself have the first iPhone unlocked with no Rogers Data Plan.

Typical shortsightedness

Screwed up

I honnestly think Rogers has not been fair regarding its pricing towards anything they own. I used to be with Fido before Rogers bought them and since them I have the constant feeling that the company if after my money :(. I have been downgrading my service ever since. I think it is now down to the point where I fear everything Rogers is doing and this iPhone pricing details just confirms me this company if evil.

OGM, the cost of these plans is insane.

Why even bother?

Doesn't the rest of the world serve as an example to the Canadian service providers that when mobile plan prices are lower overall usage goes up--more than enough to compensate?

The Canadian companies need to understand that while they may control cell phone networks, they don't have a monopoly on communication in general.

The longer these wacky costs exist, the better Canadians will adapt to avoid using cell phones. Cell phones will be an extravagence of the well-off rather than an indispensible tool for everyone. It's a basic principle that you can make more money getting a little bit of money from everyone rather than a large amount of money from a few (assuming supply is not constrained--but are Canadian cell phone networks saturated?).

The government should step in... Canada will start losing its tax base as citizens immigrate to "the States" and elsewhere in order to get iPhones. ;)

I feel for you guys, you poor hosers :)

I'm just going to pay $19.99 for the 5 Apps Apple released for the iPod touch and pay the $9.99 for the update for the iPod touch as well. Man, our Bell family plan is cheaper then the cheapest iPhone plan when everything is factored in.

Aweful plans...

I was super excited about the iPhone coming to Canada but I'm going to stick with my current cell company...

Once again Rogers screws Canadians...

Bring on the USA companies to Canada....

All Canadian providers offer unlimited incoming texts. You just get charged too much to send them.

lol... it's always funny to read that in the US (and Canada) you have to pay for INCOMING calls and texts.. I mean, wtf? Ok, it probably isn't that weird if you are used to that system.. but I'm glad we don't have it here (in Europe).
I currently pay EUR 3.9 base fee per month, I got unlimited (outgoing!!!) texts and 3.9 cent / minute for calls to any provider (in Austria). 6gb (UMTS or HSDPA) traffic is EUR 16 / month.

I wonder how many people are just going to unlock their iPhones and use another provider?

Soon unlocking phones in Canada will be illegal due to the new copyright laws that could be put in place.

Big hefty fine for having the tools to do so, regardless of whether or not you use them.

Insane

No unlimited Data plan? I might actually cancel my service with Rogers after my 6 years just to show them how stupid this is.

Make the plan a little cheaper and you will have more customers I guarantee and not only more customers but more Happy ones!

Crap

Like many others here, I will forgo my iPhone purchase.

Rogers=iIdiots

Perhaps my solution will be tape... As in taping my Razr to a touch.

I haven't read through this entire thread...

Can someone explain the:
Unlimited Access to Rogers Wireless and Fido Hotspots

Rogers has what they call Portable Wireless Internet that connects anywhere in the 3G areas basically.... I wonder if the "Hotspots" areas is this area... if it is, then we would have unlimited data in these major areas...

Time to understand how business works.

That's a hollow argument. Given Canada's population density is less overall you could say that, but think about this. Carriers have less area to cover, they only have to provide service to a tiny percentage of our northern territories, and the same goes for most of the provinces. 90% of coverage is going to be right along the border where nearly all of our major (and minor) cities lie.

Perhaps my solution will be tape... As in taping my Razr to a touch.

Being Canadian, I will of course use duct tape...I'm laughing at the thought of the 'camera phone' from Flight of the Conchords...sad that we have to be this ghetto to everything we want!

Before everyone goes into a crazy rant about how telecoms in Canada suck let me point out that both Telus and Bell offer Unlimited data for $30 with at least a 30$ voice plan. That is just as good as anything offered in the States. Rogers gets away with this pricing because they are the GSM monopoly and thats it. With the wireless auction almost over the new providers will make Rogers pay for their gouging.

Ah, it's times like these that I remember why I left Canada. God Bless America!

Is this necessary?
