Meanwhile IKEA has this for years

That doesn't do what AirPower proposes to do.

so a minor update to airpods just to buy time

What would they _need_ to buy time for? I don’t think that’s the reason at all, Apple sometimes is very incremental with their updates with their product line, and that’s been a tradition for years with the iPhone, even with the Apple Watch being an accessory as well. The AirPods are still too early to tell what technology they have in place, I agree this is a minor update, but I don’t think Apple is buying time with anything given this is the first release in over two years, when they easily could’ve updated the AirPods a year ago if they wanted to.

I own Airpods since launch and they’ve been fine, but $79 for charging case??
and why the wireless charging case doesn’t come as standard now that it’s available?
why so much greed? seriously?

Samsung Galaxy Buds come with wireless charging case as standard, sound better, with better technology and are significantly cheaper.

What do people expect when they're prepared to pay Apple $39 for a case that's just a piece of silicone that doesn't even cover the bottom edge of the phone?

If anything it's a massive bargain compared to that precedent.

Online inventory and store inventory are not always one and the same.

You may want to review the specs for AirPower because you seem to have confused the similarities between AirPower and Samsung's "equivalent."

Why review when Airpower doesn't exist........

Hah, I just bought AirPods 2 with the wireless case not long ago. So looking for wireless. Although I switched from a flat Qi charger to an upright one a few months ago and so I have a spare at home, so I might just set that one up on my desk at work which is where I use AirPods the most.
I am a goober. The 3 coils on the Nomad charger gave me a brain itch. It made no sense that it had 3 coils and only charged the phone. Turns out my instincts were right. It charges two devices and the Apple watch. Jeff at 9to5 did a nice short video on the charger in early February. That is a damn near perfect layout.

Stop crying for $79 when in Brazil we have to pay $180 after currency conversion for the same thing.

Oh yeah, and the new AirPods costs 445 USD.

OMG I want it.

If the new AirPods look the same as the old AirPods, how are people with old AirPods supposed to know that I'm better than them when I buy the new AirPods?

It's not about them, it's about you. Your user experience should be better.
Enough with these stupid myths! In reality, no ones gives a flying monkey what other people use!

I think that - in order to solve their technical issues with AirPower -
they had to change the overall design to do so. I think we're getting a slightly different looking AirPower mat these days.

As long as it 'looks' like a mat still, people may not worry too much.
