This looks like an amazing machine. They certainly listened to some pros to design it - perhaps the top 5-10% who can afford this thing. The issue in my eyes is the entry price.

The STARTING price is $6,000. That is the issue. One can either like or dislike the looks, complain about the screen (optional and plenty of other screen options out there) and of course the $1k stand is a joke, but this is all about the entry price for a desktop Mac Pro. A desktop 8 core Mac with decent graphics should be available in the $3-5k range. It was with the original G series, it was with the cheese grater Mac Pro, it was with the trashcan.

I am willing to bet a huge segment of pros simply wanted an iMac without being forced into the screen and an all-in-one. An 8 core i9 iMac or 8-10 core Xeon without a screen, semi decent graphics and some level of expandability, priced in the $3-5k range...then sure go up from there with tons of cores and even more expandability/graphics/overpriced storage/etc.

There is no technical reason they cannot make such a machine and make money selling it. None.
[doublepost=1559668142][/doublepost]In 2013 the $3000 price tag was deemed high as the entry point. Now it is $6000! wow. the love/hate relationship with Apple will never end.
$6000 is not too bad. It's clear that this is an actual workstation. For that price, you can get comparable server hardware.

But the design.....

Then get a beige box. HP, Lenovo, Dell, all have decent workstation machines. No point in harping at Apple who clearly has a different vision on what they want to make than the cheap beige box you wanted.
It’s like complaining to Ferrari to no end for them to make a $20k family car.
Yeah yeah, you know what I'm going to say, it doesn't run macOS.
And no, I don't want to Hackintosh either.

Putting the issue aside of now having to buy an external TB3 storage on top of the already expensive pro rig, and assuming the TB3 external storage actually support 40Gbps transfer rate, are your CPU cycles used efficiently compared to internal bus transfer speeds? I am not sure.
I would think so. It's somehow related to PCIe. Speaking of which, this thing has enough PCIe slots; you could always put storage into one of those.

82Gb Quad link GPUs - 1 is 14Tflops (2080ti is 13). 4 would be 56Tflops with 128gb VRAM!!
1.5Tb RAM - 6 Channels
1.5 Kw PSU
8 PCIE slots

No PC remotely like it. You are wrong.
Yeah there is, check the workstations. Apple doesn't have many special parts (HDD encryption chip maybe). What sets them apart is the design and the OS integration.

Lets see, a lot of people spend $1000 a month on rent, $500 a month for an automobile and they complain when a Mac Pro can be paid off in a year at $500 a month or $250 a month for two years and last 10 years. Go figure?

$6,000 not bad? You can buy an iMac Pro starting at $5,000. Besides expansion the same thing. For $1,000 less you get, 8 core Xeon, 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM AND a 5k screen. More storage and a 5k screen for $1,000 less. The design/expansion is not $1,000 more.

Apple could make an good pro desktop machine (currently a 4/6/8 core i9 or 4/6/8 core Xeon with decent graphics and some expansion capability) in the $3-5 range with profit margin. And keep it updated regularly. For whatever reason they choose not to.

I trust you on the numbers. Computers (i.e. actual desktops and laptops, not just anything with a CPU) are simply more expensive than they were in the pre-"I-Just-Use-My-Phone" days. Late 2000's were the heyday.

*Crapping* on Apple is easy. My younger brother and I legit BOND when talking about the ******** they pull. BUT...I give credit where it's due.

The $1,000 stand is absolute Apple bougie ridiculousness, tho. I bet even billionaires will complain about that ****ing stand price. "A GRAND...FOR A STAND." in case no one's made that low-hanging-fruit joke.

*A previous version of this post included a starred-out version of the dreaded "SH Word". It has since been updated to reflect the action of the verb.

Is everyone's vision of "the 1%" that they buy the new Mac Pro each time? I'll bet most of these are purchased by corps. Most people don't need or even want this kind of machine regardless of price. And the fact that they sell justifies the price.

I still wish there were a midrange expandable Mac desktop.

Time for a Mac mini pro.
Same design, less tall, less pci slots, less memory slots, 1 120mm fan on the front, place for one single or dual vega2, cheaper Xeons or i9’ s , etc.
Great for smaller businesses, and a cheaper. For people that want the power of an iMac pro but with better upgrade ability and more flexibility, but don’ t need all the power of the new Mac Pro.
And perhaps a cheaper and smaller version of the xdr monitor which is of course not as good as the xdr monitor but could still be quite good.

They need something in the middle.... for pro consumers or smaller developers.

Yes that would be nice! Please put your request in at https://www.apple.com/feedback/macmini.html. Apple has a feedback page just for these kinds of requests!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Err, if you think you MUST have macOS AND MUST have mac pro spec, then ether save up some money to get one or rethink your actual needs.

Why don't you meet up with Apple's board of directors and tell them you can run the company better than Tim Cook? I mean if they think your idea is better for the company, you can oust Cook for the CEO spot. Just sayin' as it seems you are more expert in the business.

This is the most "professional" computer Apple has ever made. It's focused on extreme power and flexibility for the very, very few who actually need it.
People demanded it, and Apple delivered. Let's see if those demands were real.
Once the actual demand is normalized, people will probably realize that they actually don't need what they demanded, and many can probably go by with the regular iMac/mac mini.

Imagine spending $6K on a ball-busting audio/video/VR editing machine (that also runs MacOS) with which you can make a nice living, when you could just buy six iPhone X's. Ahh … perspective!

It's not for everyone, including me at this point. But I can dream little — while hoping my 2015 5K iMac stays alive and I don't have to send the whole bloody thing in for service. Still hoping for something in-between this and a Mac mini, and an Apple display I can afford.

I am curious why the base model Mac Pro is $1,000 more than the base model iMac Pro which has also has an 8-core Xeon and 32GB of RAM but the base model iMac Pro has 4x as much SSD space, a much more powerful GPU, and a 5k display to boot. I get that you are paying for expandibility but the initial price seems high or else the iMac Pro now looks like a screaming good deal.

I agree... I think Apple has done this:

iMAc Pro = ProConsumer Productions machine
Mac Pro = Pro level industry (excepted to be purchased by corporations)

We need:

Mac Mini

Mac This computer is missing... this is what we want.

iMac Pro
Mac Pro

My fully loaded 2016 15” MBP chugs a bit driving a 34” LG ultra wide, 27” LG 5K and a 27” 1080 monitor while running 512 voices with ProTools Ultimate 2019.5. I was hoping things would be better on a loaded 2019 MBP... dunno what i’m gonna do if it will still be a problem - portability is key for me. It seems all the thermal tests might not take into account ate additional heat a fully driven GPU will add to the the equation. It’s pretty obvious that this new Mac Pro is designed to have NO thermal constraints after the trashcan debacle.
No thermal constraints and.....how many times in the marketing materials and keynote did they talk about its "function?" They're clearly signaling to people "we heard you---we designed around function..."er...."our design of the form was driven by it's function" (or something pretentious sounding).

I still can't get over how ugly the machined holes on this design are - along with those on the monitor. The solid tubular feet and handles just look really weird on the macPro, and - at least in all the photos I've seen the juxtaposition between the machined ends and flat sides (And the flat area across the back of the display) is just weird.

I also have to say that the stand just doesn't look like it matches either...far too square and angular.

Whatever happened to the great, **understated** designs of the old cheesegrater MacPro and the old aluminium displays?

I'd feel like a right idiot with one of these new designs on my desk - even if I had the need or the funds. They look way over-designed (like a complete waste of money on the cases that aren't even pretty).

That's a bit disingenuous. Granted, this forum is a very small sample, but there is a pretty vocal element requesting that type of product. They may certainly be in the minority, but we're not that far removed from the MacPro 6,1 failure to think that they automatically get the benefit of the doubt.

It's an older 8-core Xeon. Also, the I/O is all different.

I agree. I would love to have a headless Mac with 1 PCIe slot for a GPU of my choosing, with a non-Xeon Intel CPU with a proper heatsink and fan, and user upgradable RAM. Call it the Mac and price it at $1999.

I will buy the highest end Mac Pro unit, with four Pro Display XDR's...just to brag that I have it, and to continue posting in MacRumors in style. I've got plenty of money to spend, and I can't take it with me when I'm gone. But hey, at least I'm honest!

So the G5 for 1800$ in 2003 wich would be roughly 2500$ inflation adjusted was not a pro workstation?
Look people are rightfully disappointed they hoped for a pickup truck and they get a Caterpillar D7.

Most of people will do well enough with iMacs or iMacs Pro. Was G5 same workstation as Mac Pro now is?

They went full steam punk. Nice. As far as the specs go, meh. You can build your own for 60% of the price and get approx twice the power.

With what specs?

Dell's offering for similar specs is around $5,000 USD. The same machine also is configurable for up to 3TB of memory, 112 threads (56 cores), and quad GPUs as well. This config blows past the $100k mark, however.

It's going to be interesting to see what the maxed out Mac Pro will come to. I have a feeling it will be a fair bit more than the $35,000 predicted.
