Is Ive even working these days?
Yes, doing voiceovers for the demo movies for the launch.

But at this point the sound of his voice makes my blood boil. Ive = removal of all software features, removal of all buttons, removal of all user interaction in the OS, and removal of Scott Forstall who was the last person left who understood what Apple used to stand for.

I assume that Ive had nothing to do with the Mac Pro, and EVERYTHING to do with it's $1000 monitor stand.

Say what you want about inflation, but i have owned several MacPro's in my lifetime. I was able to even afford a higher end model in 2008. But the base model at $6000 with 8cpu and 256gGB storage? That model fits NOBODY. It doesn't start making sense until you've spent over $10,000 ($24,000 after you add two monitors and stands !!!!)... guaranteeing that only Pixar can afford them.

If you are going to make a 5 figure computer that only a few COMPANIES can afford, why bother. That's not economically feasible. They should have just bailed out of the market (Ive's first choice). Having said that, i don't think the starting model starts at $6000 because of tech, or R&D, or the materials necessary...... i think Angela Ahrendts said on her way out the door "Just double or triple the price on the MacPro. People will pay $1000 for a $200 monitor stand. Apple is a lifestyle brand"

I've been an Apple lifer "Since1987".... but c'mon. A $1000 monitor stand is offensive, ridiculous, and indefensible.... and 100% representative of what post Jobs Apple has morphed into.

I love how people have buyers remorse, Apple tells us that they have a new Mac Pro system coming out a year ago, and people do not wait, they rush out a buy a PC with Window 10 "OMG another blue screen of death on windows 10" and are upset on what they have purchased and have to rag on here how much the new mac costs and how another system is better. You can always sell the current system use the cash to buy a new 2019 mac pro :)

I has gotten cheaper and continues to do so. In '93 few would have ever dreamed of the types of devices and computing power now accessible for under $10k. The money it took to barely let you edit on a 10mb color image now gets you something with which you can make major motion picture, develop insane VR technology, etc. The new MacPro is pricey high-end tech for sure, but for the quality and power and expandability of workstation it is, it's comparable to others using other OS's. But yes, it's still a Mac and that's always a premium price, like it or not. Am I miffed they didn't offer something truly modular at a more prosumer (ie. most professionals) price point? You bet I am. BUT, in a year or two, prices will come down on the brand new high end stuff as it always does. But it looks like I'll be keeping my 2015 27" iMac for a while.

Thank you. I work in a fairly strictly audio environment, so this would be massive overkill for the minimal video work we do. I could probably run the entire studio on this, with room for video, animation and for all I know, lunch preparation. Accounting would have my arse were I to order this. :) But it's fascinating to read about.

Unfortunately this will not change a thing related to production with 3d and VFX. These specs are already outdated for a base config for most of our work. Cost is also a huge factor in studios where margins are small to start with. The lack of Nvidia support means this is a no go. We rely on open gl and open cl for many current application and tools and Apple has now made them deprecated in osx. No amount of overpriced hardware will change anything related to that. And to be fair I don't think Apple cares to cater to this market nor needs to. We are a small niche market of creatives and already have well established pipelines without their hardware. I can see others who really love Apple going nuts over this. But this changes nothing when it comes to high end 3d.

It doesn't change anything with low end 3d either (which is where I am at).

My next system will be Eypc. - I get a lot of cores & ram for $6,000 - I don't have a problem with the base price point, I have a problem with what I am getting for the base price point.

I need a multi-monitor solution with expandability and upgradability as well as decent performance?

So, other then expandability and upgradability, sounds like you should do a Macbook Pro with multiple monitors. I higher end mac mini is a powerful machine also, but again not upgradable.

What kind of upgrades or expandability do you need? More ram or processor. You can do that on the Macbook pro's: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...touch-bar-processor-ram-storage-upgrades.html

I'm glad they finally made a machine for the real pros out there. Hopefully it's not too late to win them back.

Now cut it in half, put consumer grade components in it, remove about half of those expansion slots and replace them with regular slots found in PCs (i.e. remove that extra connector they have on the GPU), and sell it for 1/3 the price so us normal folks who don't work on raw 8K video have a good, upgradeable option.

And I've replied to the wrong comment somehow. Sorry!

View attachment 840761 Buy a $1500 mac mini with a Intel i7 and a sonnet echo Express III-R with three PCI slots for $999. There is your $2500 lower cost Mac.
This is the model we use for expansion on our nMPs (6,1). So in addition to the base model price of 2999$ we had to add one or two of these. Especially for professional audio work the 2013 Mac Pro still does it's job pretty well.
So for everyone looking for a nice in-between mac, just buy a mini or a refurbished/used nMP.

As far as I see things in audio or music production no one will need the new display anytime soon. It will of course show up in some major studios, just because they can.
I also think there might be chance they'll introduce a lower spec'ed display later this year.

If this new Mac Pro helps one to be more productive or faster in workflow, it will easily generate the money it costs (and more). If not, it is definitely luxury. I see that people are angry about the price, but do they really need it?
I would love to buy it as soon as possible, but there would be absolutely no benefit for my work at the moment.

starting at $6,000! STARTING AT $6,000 for an 8 core, 256SSD, and AMD 580X? Are you kidding me???

They already make an 8 core Xeon, with 1TB SSD, similar graphics AND a 5k screen for the same price.

Why won't can't release a Mac Pro in the $3000-5000 range? The greed is unreal. It is across all platforms now, iPhone, iPad, Mac. Never ending!

It boggles my mind. I would be willing to pay the same amount for an iMac of the exact same specs minus the screen and some expansion ability. The iMac screen has always been too glossy and reflective for my taste and I have never been a fan of the all in one design for repairability reasons.

I was waiting to see what the new MP was going to be, hoping to finally buy one. Instead I could buy a new 2019 27" iMac 8 core i9, 1TB SSD, Vega 48, AND a brand new iPhone XS AND an iPad Pro 12.9...all for LESS than one entry level Mac Pro. I have been without Xeon and ECC for 20+ years and doing just fine.

In summary I have no problem with the new super expensive, ultra expandable Mac Pro, crazy monitor for niche color accurate needy pro users, and a $1,000 ridiculous bad PR monitor stand. No issues. Though the stand price is over the top.

For the other 95% of Pro users give us the headless iMac already. It should not be this hard.

I agree, it looks like a half assed revival of the G5 Pro. They should bring back the G4 cube design, IMO.

This is the most "professional" computer Apple has ever made. It's focused on extreme power and flexibility for the very, very few who actually need it.

"1000 dollar monitor stand apple" is now a thing on Google. Apple is a laughing stock!!

For God's sake Ive, RETIRE!!

If you go to Boxx.com and configure one of their Workstations with a similar base configuration to the new Mac Pro. the price is $6000 so its competitive with Name brand, High end workstations.

True that this is not mid range model but everyone on here and other forums was crying and moaning that Apple should bring real PRO WORKSTATION. And they did. And it is same price than comparable Windows workstations. And yet, still someone cries and moans.

lol @ the typical replies here.

Apple delivered an extreme, high-end pro machine.
It costs $$.

For professional companies who rely on the fastest tech to get the job done the new Mac Pro will be a beast.
If you have any idea what these companies spend on hardware and operators then these new machines are hardly 'expensive'.

...

oh - only film/TV production companies, design firms, special effects companies, recording studios - you know those people...

Just grabbing a few of these kind of responses, but in my opinion the biggest issue is the price point for simply entering the ecosystem. No one who knows what they're talking about will argue that a similar specced rig (using same parts) from other PC vendors will be wildly different when it comes to price. The problem is that facilities rarely often need to outfit an entire team with this level of machine. This is why vendors like Boxx offer machines using consumer chips and start at a much lower price level for entry. Not everyone needs Xeons and ECC memory.

So the natural response to that would be then, just get the Mac Pros for those that need them and other machines for those that don't. The issue there is that you're then looking at iMacs, iMac Pros, or Mac Minis. While they may work, it's a different kind of machine.

I'm involved in purchasing decisions for high level post production work. I'd love it if we were Mac OS based. But even though we have use for this level of hardware (we're currently a combo of HP and Boxx), we're not going to get all-in-ones for the other users.

This is simply coming from a post production standpoint, so take it for what it's worth. Of course businesses/facilities can and will spend this kind of money on hardware, but there are a lot of things going into those decisions.

The pricing is probably going to make 'server farms' harder to pull off with this system. Not that I'm familiar with them, but to spend over 6k for each node, how much can studios spend to get 200 of these for a farm? Will Apple provide 'volume discounts' for big purchasers? And more than $100 off for each unit?

I'm not sure I see many using these to build farms (render farms at least). There are a lot of variables that go into how you set up the farm and what kind of hardware is optimal. While you'll be able to customize the Mac Pro, I think you're still fairly limited with options, where other vendors will be able to customize a solution much closer to one's needs.

This thing is a beast! In my opinion Apple delivered what the vast majority of the pro community was asking for.
I’m not sure the vast majority were looking for a machine this expensive. Maybe the top 10 or 20%. I am a pro but the price is way to rich for me. And ido make good money from my work. Not enough to warrant oversoending though. This is not a luxury item after all.

I had many more kernel panics on my 2016 mbp than bluescreens on my diy modular PC running windows. How times have changed....

My biggest question regarding the design is dust and general daily maintenance of keeping all the holes clean. I work in a relitavily clean environment but those holes are simply scary. This is the worst design I have ever seen from Apple.

Or, it's just possible people are legitimately disappointed. Though I admit it can be hard wading through the **** to find legitimate criticism on the internet.

I don't really get the complaints on the visual appearance though. Sure, it looks a bit odd, but that doesn't bother me at all. I kind of liked the cylinder's appearance as well. The overall appearance falls pretty far down on my list when I'm assessing hardware needs. Except of course if you're doing a custom build PC and the market is saturated with ridiculous looking chassis.

It is just not the right tool for most pros. ECC and Xeon requirement is super niche just like the grading monitors.

Honestly, I love the design. Each time I see another picture, I fall into love with it.

I'd love to quit my job and turn photography from a hobby into a profession and make this my main machine. It's incredible!
I’m a pro photographer and this is nothing I would want or need. Especially at the price. I need a computer half that price with expansion capabilities. Apple is catering to the 1% of pros.

But seriously. How are you supposed to put that display on your desk if you do not but the thousand dollar stand? (and don't say 'buy the 200 dollar vesa mount:p)

It's the only machine with expansion possiblities on a Mac Machine, and that's why this entry price sucks for most people.

Most of the "Pro" user want expansion posibilities, i hate those bloody adapters and 1000 of connecter cables on the table, that's why i still use my MBP13'' 2012, it has an RJ45 built in, due i like cable connections: fast, save and stable and with the 2 SSD's for MacOS, Linux & Win it's still fast enough, and i don't have to compute a earth clima calculation on it for my task's.

I need fast storage and i like to have a lot of storage, and therefore i still use my old MacPro 4,1, Cheap PC- Gefore with cuda for Hi-Res importing LP's and Sound editing with Logic and a highend soundcard, i got this machine for 400 Euro's 7 Years ago, thanks to upgrade possibilities it is still running.

Now they've built a Beast for 0.001% Pro Users that REALLY need that beast, but i guess 25% would have been so happy to have a machine with expansion possibilites.

And why took it so damm long to get the **** together?

For all of you that have too much money, why not, go buy your playtoy, but then you also should give a 15'000$ to Greepeace and all Care organisations there are, it seems then you got money for that too.

I wonder what the price will be in the UK and Europe, i guess they charge at least 6500 Euro for the EntryLevel.

I worked for an Apple Retailer 20 Years ago and i just can say it in Bob D.'s Words " The Times they're a changin"

Have fun whatever you buy ;-)

This looks like an amazing machine. They certainly listened to some pros to design it - perhaps the top 5-10% who can afford this thing. The issue in my eyes is the entry price.

The STARTING price is $6,000. That is the issue. One can either like or dislike the looks, complain about the screen (optional and plenty of other screen options out there) and of course the $1k stand is a joke, but this is all about the entry price for a desktop Mac Pro. A desktop 8 core Mac with decent graphics should be available in the $3-5k range. It was with the original G series, it was with the cheese grater Mac Pro, it was with the trashcan.

I am willing to bet a huge segment of pros simply wanted an iMac without being forced into the screen and an all-in-one. An 8 core i9 iMac or 8-10 core Xeon without a screen, semi decent graphics and some level of expandability, priced in the $3-5k range...then sure go up from there with tons of cores and even more expandability/graphics/overpriced storage/etc.

There is no technical reason they cannot make such a machine and make money selling it. None.
[doublepost=1559668142][/doublepost]In 2013 the $3000 price tag was deemed high as the entry point. Now it is $6000! wow. the love/hate relationship with Apple will never end.
