I think they named the new iPad the "iPad Air" at the last minute, because you would think they would have labeled the device somewhere "Air," but instead it just says iPad on the back.

That's how they always been. The iPad mini doesn't say mini anywhere either

Has the RAM amount for the "iPad Mini Retina" been release yet.

Notice the quotes and the bold font. Within those quotes are words. Those words do NOT read "iPad Air".

Basically, I want confirmation on RAM in the Mini R.

It isn't on :apple:Apple:apple: site yet. Sadly I have a feeling that the first site to list this will be ifixit. That's OK, I'll wait.

:apple:

I am disappointed in the prices. I am sure the iPad Air and the iPad Mini 2 are quality devices, but I feel like moving from the $329 point to a $399 and then keeping the $499 with only the size difference is moot. The Mini is meant to compete with the Nexus 7, right? So why not give someone like myself an opportunity to buy one without paying a premium? Too bad it comes out now because I rather buy the PS4 over the iPad Air or Mini 2 seeing as I already have a Nexus 7 2013 model. (Willing to sell and go back to iOS at some point.)

No it's not intended to compete with the nexus 7. For one it's 8 inches, not 7, second Apple would never be able to profit if they were to price anywhere near the nexus 7 and Apple needs to profit, they don't make money any other way. They saw what a big hit small tablets are, and joined that rank but they certainly don't intend to compete price-wise, that would be suicidal.

Anyway since this is MacRumors do you guys think they won't release an "updated iPad Air" (same screen size not bigger iPad Pro) until next year or is it possible they might refresh the Air in April/May with better camera, A7x etc?

I'm a troll just because I criticise Apple?

Hey, it's the latest most fashionable thing to do: criticise Apple. It's akin to showing your underpants to the world, walking down the street spitting and thinking, "I'm so cool, I'm better than everyone else." Hey, it's stylish and popular, the fact that trolls do it too just makes it even more fun, and no one would ever consider you part of a group that does the same things you do simply because you do the same things they do, the very things that define their existence, right?

I used the Nexus 7 for a day. I can tell you it's a piece of junk on top of the screen being too small. I'm not sure how so many people are happy with it.

My guess is that both will have 1GB of RAM since it's still called A7. Of course there were examples where the 'same' chip has different RAM config, e.g. The A4 of iPad 1, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4, but they were first-gen Apple branded chips so I don't think this history shall apply. Given that the iPad Air and iPad mini Retina both have the same config, I don't think their RAM onboard will be different.

I was NOT expecting the iPad Mini to have the A7 chip. I figured for sure it would have the A6X (1 generation behind) but now its performance is at parity with the big iPad.

I was pretty set on getting a retina mini since the form factor is so nice, but the fact that the iPad Air lost nearly a third of its weight makes the decision that much harder.

Probably will get an iPad Air in early Nov. Might as well spend the extra $$$ since I'm obviously not upgrading my Mac Mini any time soon.

I will criticize any product/company if they produce bad products or engage in bad practises. I don't have any special grudge towards only Apple.

And yet next year things will suddenly change with touchID? Really?

Perhaps this isn't the product for you if you can wait a year, and perhaps this isn't the forum to express your discontent for a product that doesn't fit your needs today (or ever some might contend).

Negative nellies have nearly taken over this forum completely.
Well seeing as how I'm unemployed, yes, I would hope next year things will be different, and waiting for Touch ID seems to fit that schedule. I've owned the iPad 2 and 3, so I'm well-versed in the iPad realm, fear not.

And I'm a consumer, so I can choose whether a product is for me or not. I don't think you're in a position to judge that. And actually, a forum is the perfect place to express my content or discontent. Are you so blinded by your Apple-faith that every Apple-related website you visit should be utopic in its existence?

And besides, where was I at all negative? Here's my original comment:
Yup, just as figured, not sure whether to go iPad Air or iPad Mini.

I'm leaning toward 32GB/white/Wi-Fi iPad Mini, but then again, might just wait until next year when it presumably gets Touch ID.

I'll definitely have to check both out in person!
I clearly expressed interest. Clearly expressed intrigue. Clearly expressed that I wanted to see them in-person for myself as any smart consumer would do.

So please, do us all a favor and stop trolling. Good day sir/ma'am.

My thoughts:

  • Don't like the name 'iPad Air'; all iPads should be thin and light
  • They're still selling the iPad 2?! The iPhone has now gone Retina-only. I was hoping Apple would push the iPad towards the same.
  • I hope the Mini prices come down next year, so the base model returns to $329. With all the rumours about supply issues, I'm not too beefed about the rise to $399 this year. Once components become more readily available, prices should drop.

I was hoping for AT LEAST an IGZO display if nothing else.

Battery life is the same, screen is EXACTLY the same, it has the processor of a phone, RAM is the same, camera the same crappy 5MP back and 1.2MP front, no 802.11 ac, only 16GB base. On top of that iOS 7 is currently just a stretched out version of the iPhone version for iPad. "iPad Air" is already fully outdated before even being released. MAJOR disappointment.

BTW does anybody know why IGZO display was not included or when it will be included?

So who cares if the iPad works great... The problem for you seems to be the code of the processor?!

Am I the only one who couldn't care less about touchID on the iPad? I dont use it with a single hand like my phone. It just seems like people are trying to find something to bitch about.

If the rumor were true that Apple is having low yield on the fingerprint sensor,
I think they just decided to skip touch id rather then skip new ipad altogether for this holiday season.

I'm a troll just because I criticize Apple? The nexus 10 came out last year and its hardware is better than this unreleased iPad Air, which is a fact.

Also just to put it out there, I bought an Android tablet and returned it the same day because it was a piece of junk. I evaluate products based on facts and rational thought, not because of their brand. The people on this forum unconditionally defend apple as if it's their own dad's company or something. "Oh you don't like it? don't buy it then." Well ya I won't buy it but that doesn't prove in any way that I was incorrect in saying iPad Air is outdated or that Apple's ripping people off selling iPad 2 for $400.

Would you mind detailing which specs are better on nexus 10?

Apple never has given us all the latest technology in their devices across the range. They tend to stagger it and see how it performs in the wild. If it's a hit then they introduce it in the next product update.

There are of course, as you say, low yields of certain components which also play into this scenario.

Apple always hold back on first gen devices e.g. iPad 1 vs iPad 2. The iPad mini 1 was basically a shrunken iPad 2 so if it flops, Apple will not lose anything. They will release a much better gen 2 if gen 1 sells well.

The iPad Air and the mini look fine. Pricing on the mini is extremely qurstionable and aside from ringging out every dollar why in the world are they still selling the iPad 2 at what he iPad 4 should cost? That's an extremely cheap move. A 16GB iPad 2 should not be anywhere near $399.

The air name is a bit odd as it appeared Apple no longer wanted numbers and just iPad. So next year people will be calling it iPad Air 2 or iPad 6.

Yes I agree that the iPad Air name is stupid. But it's obvious that Apple doesn't want to call the iPad with generation numbers like the iPhone. There will be no iPad 5,6,7,8.... just like Macs. As mentioned by another member I guess they are preparing for an iPad Pro.

No Touch ID? Now I'm gonna think twice before buying an iPhone 5S contemplating whether Apple is actually going to expand this technology anytime soon. And so are many other people.

Really? You did a survey of "many other people" or is that a friend of yours with an odd name?

Or... we can just get over it. If we don't want last year's iPad Mini for $299 or the iPad 2 for $399, we can just go and buy something else.
I'm sure there is some Blackberry tablet out there that is right up your alley.

Wow.... You are defending papa apple hard core there aren't you! You don't want cheaper pricing on 2 year old tech?

2GB RAM, 2560 x 1600 pixels, 10.1 inches (~299 ppi pixel density), Corning Gorilla Glass 2, 1.9 MP Front Cam, Dual-core 1.7 GHz Cortex-A15 (this beats many quad core Android processors even)

VS

1GB RAM, 1536 x 2048 pixels, 9.7 inches (~264 ppi pixel density), No Gorilla Glass, 1.2MP front cam, Dual-core 1.3 GHz Cyclone Processor

I do concede that the Nexus 10 is heavier and thicker than iPad Air and battery life is 1hr less but that's because it's pushing more pixels and it's more powerful. Keep in mind the Nexus 10 is ONE YEAR older which is like a light year for tech. The new Nexus 10 that will be released in the next few days will blow iPad Air out of the water on pure specs no question. I'm not saying the experience will be as pleasant though. We'll have to see.
