Roundup of Changes in iTunes 11: 'Expanded View', No Cover Flow, 'Up Next' and More

the new search can't handle multiple details. If you search name of an artist and a song, it won't bring you any results! So many songs share same names, and each artist has many songs. This makes it hard to get to a specific song through the search! That's horrible! :(
This can be done. Say you're searching for "Beatles Penny Lane", underneath the search bar Show "Beatles Penny Lane" in Music will appear. Click that.

Or you can just press enter after typing your search.

I won't miss cover-flow... I've always thought of it as a "well that's cool" feature. It's pretty, but it's really impractical if you've got a huge library.

I'm in love with the new expanded album view, except I wish I could sort the albums by date added (not just album date). Ah well, can't have everything.

And I found another bug:

The Column Browser is available for old Playlists in List View where I had the Column Browser activated before the update. However, the Column Browser cannot be switched on and off anymore after the update.

For new Playlists created after the update and for old Playlists with the Column Browser deactivated before the update, the Column Browser cannot be switched on at all anymore after the update.

Eddy Cue should be fired next!

I notice that too .. that's super frustrating ... that means it's possible to have the Column Browser view ... I'm waiting for hacks to show up .. there must be some xml attribute to set the on/off for those playlist ...

I just played with it, and found if you right-click on a track in the expanded view, the uncheck/check selection option is there and works... but there is absolutely no UI element for this feature, so you have no idea if a track is selected or not just by looking at it.

The unchecked tracks are dimmed, admittedly if there's only one track then it's not as obvious.

I'm liking this update so far but when looking at the albums with the coloured background I find that the blurring around the album cover is a bit aggressive. I think it would be better with a definite line border around the album cover rather than blurring.

After the release of Spotify there really has been no need for iTunes anymore. It is just a software to backup iPhone/iPad.

Era of mp3 player apps is fading...

Interesting, doesn't work at my end. Maybe it's a bug in the German version that I use...

It's not specific to German version. I'm using the US version and it's exactly the same as yours. Actually .. some playlist has Column Browser, but some other doesn't ... I actually has a duplicate smart playlist, and one has the Browser, but not the other one ... yet they have the exact songs and everything. And you cannot turn off Column Browser if it's showing up in the playlist ...

They really should have spent even more time to debug and feature complete this!!!! How can this pass QA?

I don't believe thats true. I think Steve Jobs said it best when he said people rather own their music. I am one of those people, Spotify is great, don't get me wrong, but try running Spotify on Cellular and see how long that lasts.

Plus those streaming services won't last forever, Spotify last I remember was taking huge losses, Pandora is apparently in trouble as we speak.

People moving to streaming is exactly what Record companies want. Endlessly pay for nothing, and when you stop you have nothing to show for it.

Got to agree!

THANK APPLE! The first time I've EVER opened iTunes and didn't spend a half hour cussing the day they were born. Works flawlessly on my 30k plus library over NAS. No lag, no slow downs, no nothing. I thought it hiccuped once when pulling apps, but it was just connecting the phone. FINALLY a version that works!!!! Please don't screw it up.

Absolutely agree! We have 70k tracks 400+ films & tv episodes all stored on a 2tb time capsule/mac mini theatre set up! Sparked up our iMac and opened the shared library - it open in 30secs instead of 5 mins - and browsing is almost instant! The way it should always have been!

Also got to say that the remote app update on the iPad now ties in so much better and quicker as well!

Way to go Apple!

Spotify is a TERRIBLE deal for artists. It's practically legal piracy.

Why the hell did they choose that adele album to show off expanded view, It just makes it look like it's gonna be some depressing grey app all the time...

- There seems to be a bug with the AirPlay button. The button, which has been moved from the bottom right to the top left of the main window is missing for some users. Some have reported restoring the button by going to the MiniWindow and activating AirPlay there and it will then appear in the main window. Not all users are affected by the issue, however.

Same for me.

Less than impressed with how it looks as a whole. Window looks weird and expanded view, while a good idea, looks crap for any covers that don't sport a solid background colour and an image that doesn't stray too far from the bottom right corner...

I posted a solution to that problem above: Switch off the Sidebar and then you can switch on/off the Column Browser. It's a bug. Most of the other problems are simply stupid, uninformed design choices by a bunch of bozos who no longer know what they are doing!!!

BTW, what's the email of Tim Cook? I would like to congratulate him on the ****** product his company once again delivered...

I really liked cover flow.

If only they implemented it like they did on the iPhone / iPod touch where you could click and album and it would spin around to show the tracks. But they never did - it was half of iPhone / iPod music app and half desktop iTunes.

The new album view is nice - and I noticed the text colours matching the artwork.

However, Spotifiy just launched here in Ireland and as an iTunes match subscriber with 80gb+ in the cloud I'm finding that Spotify trumps iTunes match both on my desktop and on my iPhone - it streams quicker, is more stable and has everything I want without the headache of purchasing and syncing etc.

This is a slick redesign, but I hardly ever find myself opening the iTunes desktop app anymore between iCloud iOS backup and Spotify.

Apple need to push a streaming only iTunes with a Netflix / Spotify style subscription model. I'd gladly pay €20-25 a month to apple for all the content hosted on their stores. I don't care about filling and maintaining hard drives with gigs of mp3's and mp4's. That era is coming to an end.

in my opinion: the first good piece of software apple ever made since the introduction of lion.
too bad it'll never support flac, i kinda want to use itunes again after this update.

i wonder: does this mean that coverflow will disappear from osx completely in the future? i always found it akward to use

Wow, this is new: on my MacBook Air 2010 the CPU jumps to 50% just by scrolling through the albums.

Does anybody have the feature complete my album in the expanded view like in the attached picture? I think Apple has not included it. Very sad.

Any way of seeing the song playcount in Album view? The only way I can see it is under Songs.
There must be another way, surely.

For those wanting Genre view to group Artist albums together:

View>View Options>Sort Albums by: Artist.

Job done. There is also an Artwork size slider bar there too if anyone is interested.

I think this is the best performing iTunes so far. The previous versions have always been much slower, especially with large libraries.

Just opening it is quicker, for a start.
