It's non-linear, but I'm not sure what difference that makes in a practical sense given the time it takes to simply press tab. To have to move the cursor to a box and click is always slower and more disruptive to my train of thought.

Hadn't heard of Aero Flip 3D - looks very cool, and perhaps best of both worlds.
It is really a matter of habit and preference. Expose comes with a few cool actions when you use the Tab, Cmd + Tab, or Alt/Option + Tab after you have invoked it.

That does not mean that I am not also using Cmd + Tab. It is just another long list of different keyboard shortcuts, mouse buttons, or hot sides/corners. I just happen to pick which ever feels most natural to me at the time based on what I am doing or my cursor location.

Bear in mind I am still on Snow Leopard's Expose.

True true, I just find really funny that they had to come up with such a sophisticated word.
"skeuomorphic/skeuomorphism" has been rather popular lately. Gizmodo is not necessarily the first to use it.

"If we'd had to wait for two years after 10.6 for the next major release of OS X, chances are good that the worst of the missteps in Lion would just be landing on our doorsteps today."

We did have to wait to years after 10.6 for the next major release -- Lion.

Will Apple ever change the stupid idea of the menu bar at the top of the screen all the time?

Yes! After spending most of my time in Windows 7 since Lion's release this is something that feels really archaic and cumbersome when returning to OS X. They will probably get rid of it altogether before they make it like Windows but I sure am ready to get rid of it.

anybody welse having issues with Safari? Please see my post on pg 11 #268

(I'm hoping that this is just an issue with Mountain Lion Spotlight indexing my data, we'll see this evening when I get home).

I don't see them as being anti-Apple at all. To people like you, you only want to see Apple fan-sites where they only talk good about Apple and never anything bad or objective, even when they deserve the harsh criticism.

Really i'm hard on of apple also, have you thought about that?! people like you need read more.

It looks like am the only one who likes Lion, but I came from Windows where I tried Windows 8 and did not like the direction the OS was taking their. I will be downloading ML as well, and maybe I will see why Lion is not as good as I thought. :)

As for Gizmodo, I know nothing about the past history with Apple, but I admit when I read about OSX or Windows every article looks biased one way or another on both sides.

I'd like to see what Apple's plan for the next 10 years looks like.

You can't see where it will be in ten more years? The convergence of iOS and OS X features will proceed incrementally until there is no device left that comes with a keyboard though they will be optional accessories. All connections will be wireless. Of course without Steve Jobs there is no more visionary director leading and like Disney and other companies it will continue to be reduced to any other corporation and similarities to what Jobs created with his passion will only be cosmetic. Apple will fade back into what it had become in the 90's, run by a bunch of corporate profiteers and marketers who have no vision.

 I put in a request for the code for Mountain Lion free download about 10 this morning EST and nothing, has anybody with a new rMBP gotten their code?

I mean the Gizmodo people are right. Apple is out of ideas. Take a look at any real fundamental differences between Leopard and Mountain Lion. The only difference is black/white UI, speed improvements, and an attempt to synergize Mac OSX and iOS. With mountian lion, they have added all the possible iOS things in Mac OSX. Besides more security and speed improvements, they are out of ideas.

What are you looking for? A holographic interface that reads your mind?

Frankly, I'd be happy if Finder offered a two-pane window option (or at least the ability to remember the two panes I have to set up myself every time I want to easily copy/move a lot of files around. THAT would be a 'big' improvement to the every day use of OSX, IMO, not Launch Control menus I'd never use (it's not a freaking iPod, after all; the dock is just fine).

I'd be happy to stay with Snow Leopard for the foreseeable future on my 2008 MBP, assuming software doesn't start to dry up for it like in the past. I still use the occasional PPC software on it (still waiting to replace my PPC server if Apple would EVER release a freaking Ivy Bridge USB3 enabled Mac Mini update) and since Apple won't let VMWare run virtual versions of regular Snow Leopard (to say play old PPC games), I don't see this changing soon.

I never heard of you until I read your post and nobody would ever think you're "hard on of apple" based on what you posted, making a flat out ridiculous generalization based on Gizmodo hating on Apple, in fact their site has posts trying to help those decide whether ML is suitable for them for the unsure/uncertain folks.

I call it like it is, fan-boy-dom exists everywhere, not just here.

Safari on my Mountain Lion 2010 Mac mini is completely useless. Every time I click on more than 3 websites, the entire program hangs up, beach ball comes out and the app starts eating RAM like crazy. Like gigs of ram
No issue here - have 11 tabs open, it's using 2-3% CPU and 53Mb RAM. When I run streaming video in one of the tabs, it peaks at about 6% CPU, no noticeable increase in RAM.

I was getting beach-balls in Safari from time-to-time under Lion, haven't seen any yet under ML.

So far so good with ML. Love the new messages App. It will be even better once iOS 6 launches.

Too bad full screen Apps are still totally worthless with more than one monitor. Can not even run two of them. You still have to have one blank screen to use a FS App. Unbelievable it made it into lion this way. I struggle to imagine the process that led to it to still be broken in ML (And it is broken).

There's also the matter of the menu bar only being on on monitor. How RIDICULOUS is it in 2012 to have a setup with 4 monitors and having to move the mouse at LEAST 2 monitors over to get to the freaking menu bar controls??? WTF can't they have an option to put the menu bar on EACH SCREEN? (a Dock option per screen wouldn't hurt either)

This is where Windows has always been LIGHT YEARS ahead of OSX in that its menu bar controls are on each windows title bar rather than at the top of the screen. Microsoft even figured out it'd be handier yet to have the controls where you can get to them even faster (ribbons). People think Apple is out of ideas? Hell, they can't even get the BASICS right in many regards. I don't care for Windows for many things, but OSX SUCKS for multiple monitors by comparison. Even Linux lets you put the start menus and/or menu bars on each screen if you so desire.

I'm really, really missing the RSS reader in Safari.. Especially the toolbar links with unread counts were very convenient..

Are there any plugins around or in the making that might restore this?

Oh no! I was so hoping they fixed this. This is one of the things in Lion that made my blood boil. What idiot at Apple thought it was cool to black out other monitors when one is in full screen? I want to use my projector and use the desktop at the same time which was no problem in every OS X iteration up until Lion, and of course works beautifully in Windows 7. In fact Windows 7 handles multiple monitors and projectors with an efficiency and intuitiveness I used to expect from Apple. This new behavior of blacking out all displays when one is in full screen is infuriating, unintuitive and idiotic.

Aero Flip was alright. Not terrible, but not exactly great, either. If you have three or four windows open, it works pretty well. If you have a bunch, they all get smushed together, and it's hard to differentiate between them without scrolling through. Specially if you've got a stack of similar looking explorer windows or text files open.

And I say "was" alright, because it's been nixed completely for Win8. Win+Tab now cycles between your desktop and Metro apps. The mouse activated, very expose like "instant viewer" is what I'm using in place of it these days.

i am so disappointed the my relatively new 2010 mid year iMac cannot do Airplay to my ATV3.

Apple is getting nasty and hungry....

Lion? Just Lion?

I followed guidance on the 'net and made a Mountain Lion Recovery partition on an external drive. However, when I tested via booting up from it.....the content referred to 'Lion Install'. WTH? Shouldn't it say 'Mt. Lion Install' or something that clarifies it is Mountain Lion?

I'm hoping this is a flub by Apple's low paid programmers and not some bungling on my part.

Agree completely, Apple has some work cut out to make OSX more useful with a multiple monitor setup. I've actually stopped using more than one monitor when developing because of this!

Couldn't disagree more. As the menu always available on top of the screen means you will never have to aim the pointer, rather just make a quick flick of the wrist and the pointer will immediately come to a stop at the menu bar. I would wholeheartedly claim that this is one of the biggest traditional design flaws in Windows.

I've been using PC (windows xp) for a long time, I'm just really glad to be on Mac pro - it make my life whole lot easier to work on.

I didn't like much about windows vista to 7 - interface really hurt my eyes and really annoyed to run update more then often. I never had any problems with Mac - no slow down or cumbersome.

I'm not sure too sure about windows 8 - maybe tablet would be wonderful idea but not the desktop/laptop since we don't have any touch screen...again very confusing to work with mouse!!

My ML install screen just Referenced " Installing OS X " . Even had a blue progress bar. That being said, ML is what Lion should have been. Wow, this iteration just flies on my MPB. Scrolling, Safari the smoothest fastest ever. iCloud really showing promise across all my devices. Very very happy camper!
Apple fan since System 6.

The universal menubar is probably the one thing I really don't like about OSX. If you've got one window or app maximized, it's okay, but if you want to get to it from one small window, you have to go to it, click it, then move all the way back up to the top to do your thing.

I think Windows tagging the menu bar on each window works far, far better here. And like dude guy said above, with the ribbon taking over everything, you end up with with a bunch of larger icons that are easier to hit without as much travelling.

According to Ars you no longer have the option of getting it on a physical media? Ok, so 5 years from now I buy a used Mac and want to install ML on it. Oh sorry, we're now on OS X Calico Feline and oh by the way, it won't install on the Mac you own.

Pathetic. The death of physical media in any form (Operating sytems, music, movies etc.) is the first step towards fascism!

Post download there was a way to reach into your own cache and burn it to a DVD...
