The alleged square frame for the 2020 iphone (ala iphone 4) would allow for the cameras to be placed
in the order of the Geskin mockup.
Having that Square frame would actually open up precious space where the curved edges limits that (if they're keeping the same dimensions).

The mockup looks so much better than the current models. Hopefully this will happen soon.
While it's only a matter of time, it is Apple. And math. They gotta repurpose certain hardware elements to maximize profits. There's a tipping point, one that always seems a little later than many would hope. It's not like when they X landed, they stopped making those screens. Like any production, it is cheaper to make a whole bunch of something than make new things (in this case) every 12-months. They likely had plans for that exact X screen config for the next several iteration. 3 and counting.

THIS is the phone everyone who bought the X-S-R-11-Pro-Max wishes they got instead. Considering Cook's track record with chassis redesigns, I doubt we'll see it coming earlier than 2021. Also, mr Geskin is a known for his brazen twitter attention hunting (don't want to use another verb).
I’ve owned a X, Xs max and now 11 pro max. The notch is invisible 95% of the time. When it’s gone I don’t miss it but I’m not bothered by it either

the actual usage area of the 5.8 is 5.4 so you are not losing anything if you are/were interested in that model - with the notch gone you will get more usable screen (in a smaller body)

Cool, thank you for pointing that out. However the time and info alike will still be at the top (unless they make a change) and therefore you still lose space as everything has to be pushed down. No?

It would be nice if they did but it wouldn't bother me if they didn't because I don't even notice the notch when I'm using my iPhone. It would be nice not to read any more notch posts.
The notch complaint posts are more annoying then the notch itself. Often it seems like the complainers don’t even own any of the models with the notch

I often read this. Why is owning a notched iPhone a prerequisite to having an opinion on it? To be sure, the notch doesn't require user interaction. It's a physical, aesthetical feature of the phone. People don't have to "use" the notch for them to not like it.

I say that because once you use one of the iPhones with the notch you don’t actually notice it. Most of the complainers seem to be people who have only seen pictures or held one for a few minutes. The notch occupies the same space as the status bar so even if it is removed they would just add more icons across the top

“if testing is successful, but the report cautioned that the fingerprint scanning technology might not be ready until 2021.”

Gotta have something for an ‘S’ update.

This would be made possible by going back to the slate rather than curved design like the iPhone 4/5 and iPad Pros. I'm down.

I don't know, I don't think that makes for any less valid an opinion even if they've only seen pictures or held it for a few minutes. I consider it the same as someone saying they don't like fingerprint readers on the backs of Android phones, despite never having used one.

How do you figure? The curve extends further than the edge of the screen, looking directly at the front of the phone. I think the rounded edges are easier to hold on these large phones by the way, although I love the slated designs mentioned.

I’m incredibly OCD so the notch has always been an eyesore, I prefer everything on an item to be symmetrical.

If this is true I’d love for them to make the side bezels thinner than they are now, similar to how the old Samsung Galaxy phones were until they start using the hole punch camera on the front.

Sorry, but no notch, no sale. All of the Apple faithful here have been saying for years how innovative the notch is and how it is the future. They have finally convinced me that a notchless phone is for losers.

ok, seriously though...

If this comes to light it will be a good thing... something they should've done in the first place. I like the symmetrical bezels on that.

I was absolutely delighted with my Sharp Aquos Crystal that was bezel-less on 3 sides and had the camera in the "chin". Sadly, bloggers and YouTubers complained about the chin and how the front-facing camera took up-the-nostril selfies... apparently flipping the phone so that the chin was on the top was too obtuse for them. That was enough to turn many off of it and in turn, Sharp never produced a follow up to that. 😕

You know they would have done this if it was physically possible a couple years ago. It actually would take innovation to shrink the lenses down to a size demonstrated by the mockup. I will be (pleasantly) shocked if the top bezel gets this small and still contains the Face ID cameras. I have to believe Apple is also working on lenses under the glass as another (more/less realistic?) option.

Just keep in mind that Apple prototypes all sorts of things that never see the light of day. I wouldn't be surprised if they had the occasionally mentioned refrigi-toaster in the labs somewhere. Just because they prototype it doesn't mean it'll come out next cycle, or ever.

I rather do like the look of this, though.

Please! An iPhone with the same design as the new iPad Pros and they can make it even thicker to get rid of the notch since they’ll have more space, no camera bump again because more space and an even bigger battery! And a the 5.4“ I’m not sure but I can imagine that it‘ll be the size of an iPhone 5? That’s a dream coming true.

With both FaceID and TouchID integrated under the screen, with no notch, a slightly thicker bezel that's around the thickness of the XR I can handle and much more willing to fork over money for. I am ready for it, be it 2020 or 2021, I am sure my iPhone 8 will last me til then. I'm looking for a change in chassis before I upgrade, especially at the higher price point Apple is asking. Used to upgrade every 6 months, but technology in smartphone has advanced so much we've reached a plateau, so that means 2-3yr upgrades may be the new norm. At least for myself.

I wonder if this would require scaling back capabilities of the front-facing camera. Miniaturization is a thing, but so are physics in terms of sensor surface area and light collection. The tapered/rounded surface area around this portion of the phone also seems rather problematic.

It would certainly be nice to do away with the notch, but it has never bothered me.
