THIS is the phone everyone who bought the X-S-R-11-Pro-Max wishes they got instead. Considering Cook's track record with chassis redesigns, I doubt we'll see it coming earlier than 2021. Also, mr Geskin is a known for his brazen twitter attention hunting (don't want to use another verb).

I don't think they'll wait until 2021. They basically did all this with the late 2018 iPad Pro, and they've surely been working on shrinking it and applying it to the iphone. And the return to flat sidewalls gives them a little extra room to make that feasible. 2020 launch is two years after we saw it first in the iPad.

Either it comes in 2020 or not at all in either in 2020 or 2021.

It is unlikely they’d release a new screen design in 2020, then yet another new design in 2021.

I don't mind the notch. Am upgrading from XS Max to the new 11 Max Pro this year for the camera. If this concept becomes a reality next year, I will surely upgrade again. :D

how!? There is so much hardware to fit inside that narrow bezel! Take a look at your X/XS/11 Pro, and looks at that bezel, then you will get impression!

If they accomplish this...that will be insane!

Maybe if the glass doesn't curve at the edges to meet the current rounded frame, and was more right angle (ala iPhone 4), that would afford a few more mm of flat glass that could help achieve this in optically the same sized bezel. No clue.

While I'm not in the notch = bad = fire Tim camp, I do support efforts toward creating as clean a face as is possible.

Why do you care about “noise from whiners”? Do you have some kind of personal stake in the design that you would let other people’s opinions bother you? Were you on the design team?

Just goes to show can't please everyone, why bother trying? People have been complaining about the notch since it was introduced. Me, the notch has never bothered me. But I will accept a bit more bezel if it means a lot less noise from whiners.

2020 is looking like the year to upgrade.

The rumors are definitely pointing to an iPad Pro-like iPhone in 2020 with straight aluminum edges and no notch. I'd welcome a 6.7" OLED iPad Pro that can fit in my pocket (currently using an iPhone 6s Plus so I have no problem with the size). Apple Pencil support and a 120 Hz Promotion display would make this product even better.

So every case will literally need to be open on top otherwise you would be covering up the sensors, etc.

I'm imagining Apples current cases but open on top and bottom.

This, right here.

A lot of people don't realize that there is a good amount of unused space that comprises the bezel, including what is the "perceived" bezel i.e. the rounded edges around the phone. If Apple returned to a flat sidewall, and kept the phones the same size, that would give them more usable space inside the phone.

I was curious about the current inside layout, so I went and checked out some photos over at iFixit's teardown of the 11 Pro Max:

(it's a large photo, and is zoomable, hence the direct link rather than posting it here)

Even now, there is a lot of space between the notch components and the edge of the phone. I would say Apple wouldn't even have to shrink components at all if they went with flat sidewalls. You would have to redesign some to fit closer to the edge, but IMO nothing would have to be shrunk.
