It’s painful for the next 3 months to wait mainly because I need an iPad and I am holding back for the new 12.9 iPad pro.

I am pretty sure some changes besides the M2 will pop up so this os why I am saving my 💰and trying to be patient.

I only have a desktop gaming PC for now

Just a little more patience….

The next iPad Pro model will be a sweet spot in features and quality. Worth the wait!

If this means that data can be transferred to and from the iPad via the Magic Keyboard’s usb c port that would be awesome. It’d be cool to plug it in to an external display that way so the cable is less in the way.

The combination of the super high pricing on apple keyboards combined with lack of compatibility between generations has stopped me from buying a keyboard.

I don’t see a lot of 3rd party accessories either as I feel they’re also afraid of obsolescence.

“F––k Everything, We’re Doing Five Pins”

These posts bashing Tim Cook do make me laugh.

So many people jumping on the bandwagon and calling him “Tim Crook” because yeah, that’s such clever name changing isn’t it?

Do they really think a CEO had the time to micromanage a company’s products so much that he’s “decided” to add an extra pin to a connector to deliberately make other products obsolete?!

So many “experts” sat at home with clearly not a clue.

I won't buy any accessory accept a pencil again for the iPad. The keyboard gravy train has to stop.
But I guess then Tim will think we will go and buy an Air to add to our iPad.

he is probably right .......

"Wide variety"? I wasn't aware of any other accessories that currently use it besides the keyboard.
I assume they’re referring to other keyboard accessories.
Hopefully it’s just an extra pin to the side and existing accessories still work…
I don’t know why that wouldn’t be the case.
Ah yes, another change for the environment so that any 3 pin smart connector accessories won't work with the new models.
Where does it say that you won’t be able to use your previous accessories?
Wow Apple is greedy. Basically this means same form factor, but one change to ensure the old case cannot be used.

Tim Crook at it’s finest.
Yeah, because Tim “Crook” was the one who made this hardware decision…

Not only is your post just a bunch of completely unconfirmed suspicions, but for all we know, previous accessories could easily work with the new connector. You’re not bringing up the full picture whatsoever, aren’t you?
I wish accessories companies would make seamless products to actually use the three-pin connector.
Yeah, agreed.
If the 11” still doesn’t have mini-LED I’m going to be pissed. So far I think it has been rumored to keep the same gimped LCD display.
Don’t you have better things to be pissed about? Do you like price increases for such a marginal difference?
Ask Logitech if any 3rd party would even consider investing in accessories for their "smart connector".
Why not? Tons of people use iPads.
I wish they'd make it so the iPad could sit either landscape or portrait in the magic keyboard. When the monitor is small, I prefer writing using a monitor in portrait mode.
That’s probably too complicated. Besides, we’re past those days now, aren’t we? ;)

OMG! Another $%#@* adapter!!!?? So now the 2022 iPads are obsolete?! Way to go TIM! What an innovator?! Your job is truly a CFO and not a CEO! Apple TV sucks! Apple home pod?! waste of money and quite frankly it nor my home pod mini have never worked as well as the SONOS speakers! I'm so sick and tired of Apple products? If anyone remembers MS during the 90s and how bloated the company OS became, I feel that apple is now at the same location. Come on Elon---- bring us something reliable, that we don't need to update every year and will actually do what it is suppose to do while innovating! This is what happens when there is a monopoly! No innovation. Who here agrees that Apple TV is a "Great" invention. or that the Home Pod is truly functional? or that I -tunes is just a game changer? Anyone? Anyone? Bueler?
It’s going to be okay.
If the USBC port on the magic keyboard supported data it would actually make a super slick docking station, it’s irritated me a bit for a while now that it doesnt
Would it even be possible for the USB-C port on the Magic Keyboard to support data transfer?
Interesting if this somehow provides additional functionality. Otherwise, seems like a move to make older accessories useless. Also, I hope magsafe charging means at a port and not the back of the Ipad. That seems less convenient to me. But, I desperately need a new Ipad Pro, so I'm probably getting whatever this is. Hope it's great.
Nowhere is it mentioned that older accessories won’t be compatible.
If this is true, this is extremely poor planning or incompetence by the engineers when they first introduced the smart connector. Absolutely no foresight by whoever was responsible. Or maybe it was deliberate.
How so? The Smart Connector has existed for seven years now. The new version is just building upon that.
„Sorry, your existing Smart Keyboard won’t work but we are happy to sell you the new one. We even increased the price“
Thankfully, there’s currently no evidence to suggest that’ll be the case.
To not move forward with new technology, just because you don’t want to change, would be the death of any innovation. Horses worked fine, so why change to a car, or cars and boats work fine, so why do we need airplanes. I’m not saying that whatever Apple is going to do with new Smart Connectors or MagSafe and iPads is going to drastically change the world, but there is zero reason to complain about said changes. And as is so often the case, the existing products, M1 iPad Pro and Keyboard for example, do not stop working just because a new better version has been released - with some new connector or technology.
Yes, well said! :)

I’ll wait for the 5 pins one.
Pffftttt. Based on Moore’s Law, We should have 6 pins a couple of years ago! 😄

Apple, you’ve dropped the ball again. But, yeah I reckon 5 pins will be the sweet spot until we can get to a…ummmm 30-Pin Connector. We know you want to…

Guess the accessory revenue needs a boost!
Apple is focusing more on services. I assume their accessories are selling just fine. There haven’t been any indicators to suggest that older accessories will be incompatible with the “new” Smart Connector.

Yeah, that would be great. I just don’t know if it’s possible though… 🤔

Logitech is a great third-party example that takes advantage of the Smart Connector.

People need to stop fearing for the worst. There’s currently no evidence to suggest that this change to the Smart Connector will result in older accessories becoming incompatible.
Next week: Google announces five pins connector for their non-selling phones.
Next month: Microsoft surface ships with 13 pin connector
You’d be surprised at how many smartphones Google actually sells. :)

Why? Many people love using their iPad with a keyboard. Best of all, there’s nothing to indicate that older accessories will be incompatible with the “new” Smart Connector. :)
Now I’ll need a dongle to connect my old accessory to the new device:rolleyes:
Are you a bot? Do you even know what the Smart Connector is? Are you just going to push a baseless claim like that? 🤦‍♂️
It's Apple. If the rumors are correct, they'd make you replace your car to get rid of the lightning port.
The rumors haven’t said anything about older accessories being incompatible with the “new” Smart Connector. 🤷‍♂️

If the 11” still doesn’t have mini-LED I’m going to be pissed. So far I think it has been rumored to keep the same gimped LCD display.
Yeah, I gave up. i didn't originally upgrade to the 2018 to the 2020 because it didn't have it, then still didn't upgrade to the 2021 because it still didn't have it. But then when the rumors that the next one wouldn't have it either I grabbed a 2021 when it was on sale four or five months ago.

Low production yields due to macroeconomics, priority to the iPhone for components, captive user base, ... so many reasons for Apple to milk the iPad Pro users.

If this is true, this is extremely poor planning or incompetence by the engineers when they first introduced the smart connector. Absolutely no foresight by whoever was responsible. Or maybe it was deliberate.

That connector is seven years old.

Do you think they will redesign the iPad Pro on this upcoming generation? Or will Apple save the redesign for the 2024 iPad Pro with OLED screen?

I am not sure what to do, I could sell my iPad Pro and get the M2 this October, but I’m not sure it is worth waiting for the 2024 iPad Pro, with an M3 and OLED display, and possibly a thinner design….
