Thunderbolt 3/4 is still faster than using smart connector and plus there is no advantage in removing USB-C on iPad.
Given the current smart connector doesnt support general data use a snail with a floppy glued to its back is faster than the smart connector

I assume that with 4 pins they’ll probably be packaging a full usb 3 or 4 layer with it, so it could be pretty fast. It’s not going to replace the USBC plug though no matter what, there would be no advantage to that, so this whole debate is silly

Would it even be possible for the USB-C port on the Magic Keyboard to support data transfer?
on the current version no, but I would assume they’d release a new version with the new pinout. 4 pins means they can support standard USB signaling

OMG! Another $%#@* adapter!!!?? So now the 2022 iPads are obsolete?! Way to go TIM! What an innovator?! Your job is truly a CFO and not a CEO! Apple TV sucks! Apple home pod?! waste of money and quite frankly it nor my home pod mini have never worked as well as the SONOS speakers! I'm so sick and tired of Apple products? If anyone remembers MS during the 90s and how bloated the company OS became, I feel that apple is now at the same location. Come on Elon---- bring us something reliable, that we don't need to update every year and will actually do what it is suppose to do while innovating! This is what happens when there is a monopoly! No innovation. Who here agrees that Apple TV is a "Great" invention. or that the Home Pod is truly functional? or that I -tunes is just a game changer? Anyone? Anyone? Bueler?

Apple is doomed yet again. News sources are reporting planet Earth just responded to that devastating Apple takedown by instantaneously tilting an extra 30 degrees. Major tsunamis are expected within the next hour or two. Run for the hills.

Wow Apple is greedy. Basically this means same form factor, but one change to ensure the old case cannot be used.

Tim Crook at it’s finest.
Or, it enables new functionality as you have a new contact to push more data through….

None of the original smart keyboards worked with the 2018 iPad Pro, which sported a new form factor.

It’s possible that even with 3 pins, current smart / magic keyboards won’t be compatible with the new iPad design anyways. So if you are going to change, may as well change all the way.

Or maybe the fourth pin is there to enable transfer of data, so the magic keyboard serves as a dock for stage manager. Attach your iPad Pro to the keyboard and you get power and data.

Seriously, it’s dismaying how the first few pages of any Apple-related news article is typically filled with people rushing in to criticise (often for the sake of criticising). Zero critical thinking, zero attempts at analysis of any sort, just cheap pot shots for the sake of easy internet points.

Simply dismaying.

Yeah, I gave up. i didn't originally upgrade to the 2018 to the 2020 because it didn't have it, then still didn't upgrade to the 2021 because it still didn't have it. But then when the rumors that the next one wouldn't have it either I grabbed a 2021 when it was on sale four or five months ago.
You didn’t wait until the actual product came out? Even then, I’m surprised your decision would be influenced by something like mini-LED
No more proprietary connectors! Come on EU! Clamp down on apple again!
What? Why? How else are keyboard accessories going to work? Excessive government regulation is highly unnecessary.

There’s a difference between connectors and ports. I’m all for regulation of the latter. 🤷‍♂️
Low production yields due to macroeconomics, priority to the iPhone for components, captive user base, ... so many reasons for Apple to milk the iPad Pro users.
Or maybe there’s just a less nefarious reason? 🤔
Yeah, I thought it was USB-C all the way?
For ports, not connectors. Keyboard accessories would only work well with the Smart Connector.
I wonder if that only covers phones?
It covers most electronics.
That connector is seven years old.
Yes, precisely! 👏
Relax, it's an unfounded rumor.
👏👏👏
Thunderbolt 3/4 is still faster than using smart connector and plus there is no advantage in removing USB-C on iPad.
Do you know the data rate of the Smart Connector compared to the latest standard of Thunderbolt?
Do you think they will redesign the iPad Pro on this upcoming generation? Or will Apple save the redesign for the 2024 iPad Pro with OLED screen?

I am not sure what to do, I could sell my iPad Pro and get the M2 this October, but I’m not sure it is worth waiting for the 2024 iPad Pro, with an M3 and OLED display, and possibly a thinner design….
Why would they need to redesign the iPad Pro? I don’t see that happening, especially since there haven’t been any rumors about that.

I assume they’re referring to other keyboard accessories.

I don’t know why that wouldn’t be the case.

Where does it say that you won’t be able to use your previous accessories?

Yeah, because Tim “Crook” was the one who made this hardware decision…

Not only is your post just a bunch of completely unconfirmed suspicions, but for all we know, previous accessories could easily work with the new connector. You’re not bringing up the full picture whatsoever, aren’t you?

Yeah, agreed.

Don’t you have better things to be pissed about? Do you like price increases for such a marginal difference?

Why not? Tons of people use iPads.

That’s probably too complicated. Besides, we’re past those days now, aren’t we? ;)

Coming to the forums to complain about people commenting in the forums? Nothing better to do? I don’t care what it costs, and certainly don’t care about a minuscule price change for an infinitely better display technology that can give me near-OLED black levels. I want feature parity between both sizes of the iPad Pro line. Get over it. 😛

Yes, that makes sense. :)
Buy their Stock, and you will be HAPPY that "Tim Crook" knows how to make money for the company. ;););)
That’s a brilliant idea! :D
LOL - Have you ever known Apple to make anything backwards compatible with a previous generation?!
Uh, yes… 🤦‍♂️
Apple is So Brave!
It took courage! ;)
I meant the rumors of Apple dropping the lightning connector, and obsoleting any car that doesn't have wireless CarPlay.
How would that obsolete cars without wireless CarPlay? The manufacturers will just release new cars to fit with the new standards. 🤷‍♂️

No need to act so salty! 🧂

Something that I think will be solved here is the fact that you need to use the main USB-C on the iPad to connect to an external display. With iPad OS 16 I’ve been using my iPad with apple’s keyboard with an external monitor. It would be nice for me to be able to just detach the iPad from the keyboard without have to also detach the cable running to the display.

I’m currently using an iPad Pro 11” (2nd generation), is there a reasonable difference between this and the third gen iPad Pro 11”?
I can’t see how Apple can make the iPad much better other than up the specs of the screen or have wireless charging and maybe operate slightly faster, but isn’t an M2 iPad overkill at this point ? I was under the impression the M1 iPad Pro was already overpowered so why is there a need for M2?

This rumor tells us nothing, basically. We have no idea if this would be backwards compatible with older keyboards (easy to do if the other three pins are in the same spot) or how it would work. Does it make the USB-C port in a future Magic Keyboard more than a charger port?

I do find it funny people are screaming about obsolescence based on a rumor that has no details. Sure, I’d be annoyed if I got a 2022 iPad and the old keyboard didn’t work, but I’m not going to start screaming until we actually know something for sure, but seriously, more than half this thread is full of complaints instead of speculation on what it might entail to future products.

To sum up the rumor, Apple MAY OR MAY NOT be adding a fourth pin to do something we have no idea about what it is to a place we have no idea where it would be with no word on how it would affect current keyboards. In other words, it’s a pointless rumor yet the usual crowd is already complaining about how a greedy Apple is out to screw people by adding features to future products. Does that about sum it up?

"Wide variety"? I wasn't aware of any other accessories that currently use it besides the keyboard.
One, I expect there are some industrial/corporate uses (think, "device you carry around a sales floor/showroom", with attached card reader or whatever), and, two, having it there will make such devices more likely to get designed/built. Few people had electric lights in their homes before the houses were wired for electricity.

I was suggesting just the other day that Apple might put a connector like this on iPhones when they go "all wireless", as a sort of backup connection point for high-speed data transfer (like setting up a new phone), high-speed charging, development use (connecting an iPhone to a Mac for debugging software), and miscellaneous special-purpose accessories.

Very much everything you said - to add, if someone gets all bent out of shape that their 2021 iPad keyboard won't work on their 2022 iPad, my first observation would be WTF are you getting a 2022 iPad for if you have a 2021? They don't change enough year-to-year that your old one is now obsolete. And if you really feel the need for the very next year's model, and you're selling off (or giving away) your old one to get the new one, then just do the same thing with the keyboard too.

But people gotta find something to be outraged about, even if it's all hypothetical.

Yes, iPad Air and several successive iPad Pros all can use the same keyboards. Remember that connector isn’t new. It’s seven years old and many iPad Pros and Airs have come out since then. You didn’t have to buy a Magic Keyboard. Past keyboards all used that connector just fine. That’s a lot of sharing features between generations.

Oh, I don’t question it’s potential uses. I was pointing out that in the original article it read as if there were already “a wide variety” of accessories available despite there currently only being one.

The article has since been updated.

Honestly, as someone who is thinking about getting the 11” M2 iPad Pro (ideally I’d wait to M3), I think the M2 is overkill but not only that. The heat that the M2 irradiates is bigger than the M1, because higher clock speeds and more GPU cores. So I am not sure how the M2 fits on the iPad Pro, especially on an 11” one.

Right now, two theories come to my mind:

1) The M2 on the iPad Pro will be slightly downclocked, or keeping the same clock speed as the M1.

2) Apple has a line of M2 built in 3nm, and those will be destined to the iPad Pro (just like an old rumor said, that the iPad Pro would be the first device to have a 3nm chip).

3) Same M2 as those found on MacBooks, but with a vapor chamber or even worse, just relying on thermal throttling to keep temperatures under control.

The third option is honestly the less desirable.

Ah yes, another change for the environment so that any 3 pin smart connector accessories won't work with the new models.
I was thinking the same thing too. It's not like this current connector has been around that long. It's only been about 3 years! If a change is really necessitated, I wish they had made the existing pin setup be more "future robust".
