Doesn't matter really, this will be a relatively minor chip bump with no other changes. The current machines are lightning fast as it is.

When they get round to sorting that notch let me know.

This is very probable, but I really fail to believe the M3 generation will be available any earlier than late 2023.
That'll be my next mac. An M3 Ultra mac studio (I currently have an M1 Ultra, but it's still not fully enough for my needs).
I hope I'll be able to sell my mac studio at half price.

There is no reason for Apple to skip M2 Pro/Max/Extreme family.

They're gonna eventually have to skip.

The A series is roughly on a 12-month schedule. The M series seems to be on an 18-month schedule (as the AX series as before).

The M1 launched two months after the A14, but the M2 launched nine months after the A15. The M3 will therefore likely be not A16-based but A17-based.

The node improvements are going to slow down once we get to 3nm. It will be interesting to see how Apple responds, especially with the iPhone.

The 2021 16” MacBook Pro is the best Apple products of the last 10 years. It has the best display I've ever seen, the best speakers, the best battery life and performance per watt. I wish Apple took inspiration and added an equavalent to the iPad Pro line-up. The 12.9 iPad Pro isn't on the same level. The screen is much smaller and has significantly more blooming, the battery life is way worse, the speakers sound weaker and there are no Pro and Max chips.

The iPad Pro is way too thin to fit Pro or Max chips.

There are clearly issues and delays at TSMC...I just hope that by next fall they can get on the 3nm process for M3 and start the rollout then to align with A17.
No. TSMC has been saying for a very long time now that they wouldn't see volume N3 revenue until early 2023, but that N3 manufacturing (risk production, etc.) was already well under way in 2022. IOW, we've known for a while now that finished SoCs manufactured on volume N3 would not come until early 2023.

The confusion was around what that initial N3 volume production (rumoured to be mostly bought out by Apple) would be used for. Q1 2023 is too early for A17, and volume production is too high volume for Mac Pro alone. That mainly just leaves M2 Pro/Max/Ultra. However, other analysts such as Ming-Chi Kuo stated that based on his supply chain info, the MacBook Pros were already ready to begin manufacturing in late 2022, but noted that would be too early for N3, meaning they would be N5 instead. However, it sounded like he was just going by dates and TSMC's statements, not any specific inside info.

I'm thinking that the MacBook Pros are indeed ready to go, but Apple is waiting on volume production of N3 SoCs, so they have to wait until 2023 for release. In this scenario, all the rumours (notwithstanding Ming-Chi Kuo's guess), line up now.

As for M3, I don't see that hitting shelves until 2024. Volume N3 production in mid to late 2023 would be mostly A17.

I had a feeling yesterday this would happen, perhaps selfishly since the 14” Mini LED display is causing me tension headaches and I’ll possibly need to sell my brand new M1 MBP by the end of the year.

I’ve heard the M2 Air has good display for extra visually-sensitive folks, have you given that one a shot?

Yes, but the issue was that the M1 Pro felt like a significantly better system to me. Perhaps this was due mainly to the display, and the speakers which don’t matter nearly as much since I’ve stopped listening to music on my Mac as it becomes a distraction to me.

First-generation Mac’s from each refresh are simply perfect, typically.
I absolutely love it, and this time I went out a limb and tried a new color: gold! It really elevates the overall experience for me somehow.

I’m just worried about the display cracking (even though I have AppleCare); I’ve heard it’s a thing that can happen with the wedge design and since I will be moving soon I’ll have to be extra careful.

I quite like the M1 MacBook Air design, but I’ll stay away as I’m not a fan of the extremely high rate of flickering Apple has added and skeptical after my experience with the M1 Pro that it won’t cause issues.

Perhaps I should consider the M2 Air again, it just didn’t feel like the upgrade I expected coming from a 15” rMBP whereas the 14” MBP did.

Nice choice of computer and color still.

Q1 2023 is too early for A17
Apple needs to have a17 ready by spring to be able to start testing for regulatory purposes (FCC) so to have first batch of chips in Q1 doesn’t seem unreasonable. But definitely not going to be any n3-based Mac’s yet.

This is not at all surprising, Apple has a long history of releasing minor refreshes via press release in the Spring.

Yeah but that's just a few chips. That's not going to be accounting for the N3 volume in early 2023 that some believe Apple has bought out.

There’s absolutely no reason for Apple to continue the yearly refresh cycles right now. I hope they shift to a 2 year one. It would benefit both the consumers as well as the environment.
Wrong. As soon as this happens tech will slow down twice as much and it'll take twice as long for innovation to happen. Instead of 10% gains yearly, it'll be 10% gains every two years. Worst idea ever

Contrary to rumors that Apple will announce new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros powered with the yet to be announced M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in November, a new rumor has suggested Apple will instead release the new laptops next year.
I wonder how many dozens of this story will appear in the next 2 months? It's like the never ending story, coming later this year, now not coming in 2022, now will see them in 2023.
