So much hype for nothing...
New revolutionary Pencil is a Piece of Cheese.
I was looking forward for the rumor about exchangeable tips in multiple sizes, etc.

Because it’s not supposed to be new and revolutionary. It’s obviously aimed mainly at users of the “cheap” ipad 10th gen, who were forced to use the 1st gen pencil with an adapter because apple gave them the updated ipad design without the magnets for charging the 2nd gen apple pencil. In other words, Apple is late in addressing an issue they should have addressed a year ago.

3 different Apple Pencil is so un-apple like. I guess apple hates iMac users too

No they’re killing the 1st gen pencil and replacing it with this for ipad 10th gen users. TBH they should have done this last year instead of forcing those customers to use the 1st gen pencil with an adapter.

I don't dig the charging capability, the current Pencil2 docked magnetically is a massive improvement over the first gen and it's really, really quick to get some life so plugging it in seems like a step back but maybe there's something I missed.
New features? maybe but to be honest the tap to switch to eraser just annoys the hell out of me because I do it often unintentionally.
*EDIT* is this just compliance to add USB-C to a device that never needed it and they are making an expensive point?... maybe it won't be anything like that ofc.
*EDIT2* The price point was a secondary glance. I recently bought 2 for 2xiPad Pro purchases at £99, well below the price on the Apple site.. meh features maybe not but cheaper price point will definitely be a seller.. could be stripped down and maybe they'll do a Pro model ofc.
The new pencil does have magnetic charging as well. The addition of USB-C is for the ipad 10th gen, which has the updated pro design and usb-c port, but lacks the magnets to attach and charge the pencil. Previously, the ipad 10th gen was only compatible with the 1st gen apple pencil, but required an adapter since the pencil still had a lightning connector. In other words, Apple is addressing the ipad 10 apple pencil issue a year too late.

No it doesn’t. It attaches with magnets but only charges via USB. Apple explicitly says so on their site.

Only the first column for the 2nd gen Pencil is ticked.

Oh sorry, my mistake. Still, the new pencil is basically aimed at users of the ipad 10th gen. It’s the only ipad that lacks magnetic charging and thus benefits from the usb-c charging port on the pencil (better than 1st gen pencil + adapter). As I said, apple should have released it a year ago along with the ipad 10th gen.

I'm behind the news.. been busy and I didn't see it was a real product. Looks like v2 is still on there with more features so waiting for a comparison :p

Correct. Because the new pencil is intended as an upgrade to v1 for ipad 10th gen users who can’t use v2 anyway (it’s the only ipad model with such a limitation), not an upgrade to v2. That upgrade will presumably come later on.

Most of these reports were about announcements "this week", not specifically today, and we've seen Apple do multiple product launches through press releases over several dates before. So this seems a bit quick to judge.
Agree. Especially considering how "stealth" Apple can be about product releases that are just minor spec bumps.

I also think Gurman hasn't said literally "no new iPads in Q4" but more something like "no significant" new releases.

My money is still on at least one or more of the non-Pro iPads getting spec bumps in time for holiday 2023 sales.

Doesn't cost Apple too much to put in some newer wireless radios and a new SoC but would see a significant boost in Q4 sales.

Over the past four days, there were several conflicting rumors about Apple announcing new iPads, a new Apple Pencil, or a combination of those two things. In the end, the only product announced was a lower-cost Apple Pencil with a USB-C port.

Below, we have put together a rumor report card that recaps all of the reports and speculation leading up to Apple's press release today.

Next, Apple needs to quietly sneak out a Magic Mouse update with USB-C charging instead of Lightning.

And, btw, I do understand why Apple placed the charging port underneath on the Magic Mouse (and took a lot of heat and ridicule for it).

It was to guarantee that users would never mistake it for a wired mouse.

This time, if Apple does update it with USB-C charging, they could accomplish the same thing, minus the ridicule, if they put the USB-C charging port on the side (as opposed to, say, the front, where people would — again — try to use it as a wired mouse).

It would spoil the aesthetics unlike having it underneath, so Apple needs to weigh the pros and cons if they decide to do this.

Spoiled aesthetics vs. ridicule. 🤔

Was surprised to see no new iPads announced. Looks like there will not be any new iPads this year.

No ipads this year

Maybe they’ll still release something in late october or in november. If they don’t, however, that shouldn’t be surprising. Apple hasn’t released ipads exactly every year since 2015 (they’ve. been releasing ipads every 1.5-2 years since then), so why do people still expect ipads yearly? it baffles me.
