Unless the new AppleTV brings something impressive to the table, I don‘t see a reason to upgrade from the current AppleTV. Maybe the remote will be much better and that would be an incentive, but apart from that I don’t see Apple doing anything special with the new version. I guess we will soon see.

Not every product refresh is meant to entice current owners to upgrade...sometimes it's just to make a better product. Apple certainly doesn't expect recent Mac purchasers to buy a new computer just because they bumped the processor a bit.

the remote sucks. that's a given. I'd put more than 64Gb of storage on there. bring back the ability to have more storage on the apple tv. if not onboard storage, then allow for attached storage.

oh, and lower the price. it's too much when compared to roku or firestick. It's go to do more at the pricepoint. maybe if it had wireless built in or if it was a homepod also, etc.

Might I recommend this game on AppleTV with the AppleTV touchpad remote:

Absolutely beautiful and elegant.

Better Apple TV performance will be great for Apple Arcade.

Perhaps the new remote seen in recent betas could be an actual Apple game controller?

I use my Apple TV 4k mostly for Zwift cycling - will look forward to better graphics after the buy / sell dance on eBay.

And like maybe one that outputs at 480p right? Maybe go all the way back to CGA. Maybe even monochrome. Because you know, some people won't use 4k or even 1080p.
Wow dude. Angry your about this

Nah, it would be dumb as rocks to release an Apple TV without hardware AV1 decoding. A12 doesn't have it.

smart-tv UIs are terrible. also underpowered and most of them runs a garbage OS. with appletv you can easily switch between apps and everything is responsive. for example a webOS tv needs several seconds to switch from youtube to netflix, etc, basically don't have multitasking at all (read: can't run two apps and switch between them). also, OS-wise they hardly ever get updates and usually are preloaded with bull.... not to mention that no-one actually develops anything specifically for smart-tv. even android based ones are quite limited as the main interaction with the UI element is touch and you can't really efficiently do this with remotes.
i have no info on roku sticks.

That's not entirely true. The more modern WebOS smart tvs support some multi-tasking. But honestly, Apple TV's multi-tasking sometimes isn't that great either. And yeah, many companies are still developing for Smart TVs, both HTML5 and Android based. The only way for companies to reach more users is to do that.

I've been thinking about buying an Apple TV for my bedroom. Would be nice if this new one came out. I'd buy one and move the one I have now to my bedroom.

Is there any reason to get an Apple TV if you have a Smart TV or a Roku stick?
Roku and others routinely share your viewing habits with advertisers. And most have a revenue sharing arrangement -- Roku threatened Fox Sports by removing their app during this year's Super Bowl (eventually restored).

In terms of value, there's no way Apple TV will be able to match these competitors, but it's the only major platform that respects user privacy. Furthermore, it has several features some might find valuable:
  • HomeKit hub (manage HomeKit devices for remote access, analyzes video from supported security cameras)
  • Apple Arcade
  • Access to wider range of third party apps
  • Many cross platform third party apps on tvOS are updated more frequently and often have more features
  • Faster and smoother performance than many other streaming devices
  • Better playback controls than many other streaming devices
  • Apple TV+ and iTunes contents offer chapter access and other perks not found on TV app written for other platforms
  • Tighter integration with Apple ecosystem -- Photos, Home Sharing, etc.

Not very long ago, a TV set top "box" was purchased once and forgotten about.
Now it (Apple TV) requires pricey upgrades and endless firmware updates to accomplish the same thing- watch tv.
Not very long ago, the cable box was a passive device that demodulated a linear stream of content broadcast over a fixed connection, with no improvement to quality over time.

Anyway, my 3rd Gen Apple TV has lasted me 8 years.

Is there any reason to get an Apple TV if you have a Smart TV or a Roku stick?

Genuinely asking.

Aside from Airplay, I can't think of any exclusive features that are useful (in a general sense).

It used to be running the Apple TV app but Roku and more than a handful of TVs do that.

The tie-in is likely folks who aren't in the general ( lowest common denominator) sense. If Apple has a decent number of folks hooked on Apple Arcade then it could be a "same game o big screen' tie-in.

There are more HomeKit cameras and routers coming. AppleTV makes a decent HomeKit "compute" hub, for folks who have bought into HomeKit. ( video footage encrypted before leaves house for the cloud. )

But yeah for someone who has an android phone , Windows 10 , and no other Apple ecosystem footprint and just wants to watch TV. There isn't much there. But Apple has to have known that when switch to move of porting Apple TV app to lots more platforms. AppleTV is going to have to do something besides just TV.

( Would be interesting though if let it do more "home hub" stuff. Like Channels DVR "brains" service. Or security. Or local calendar service. etc. )

I have the Apple TV 4K with A10X and occasionally I get a bit of lag in scrolling.

—- snip —-

I’d expect the new one to have 3 GB and would also come in 32 GB and 64 GB like the current model.

WiFi 6 would be a small bonus though.

I just wish they’d come up with a better remote.

EDIT:

Oh, the article says A12X, not A12. That could remove all lag. A12X would do great for gaming too.
If it gets A12X, I could see it getting 4 GB RAM and a 128 GB option too.

And it would get HDMI 2.1 of course.

streaming higher bit rates?
The current A10X already streams Apple TV + shows at over 40 Mbps for h.264 HEVC Dolby Vision, no problem.

One reason, for me, is being able to not having my smart TV connected directly to the internet. And of course having Air Play 2 connectivity.

Eventually, WiFi 6 and newer Bluetooth formats will show up in Apple devices, but maybe next year. :(
One thing I'd like is the ability to add Settings shortcuts to the home screen. We use a lot of earbuds in our family, moving from room to room, so any way to improve detection and switching, without drilling into Settings, would be helpful. Not all portals allow you to swipe down to change audio devices while you are watching- some only do subtitles and language streams. Sometimes my soundbar doesn't deactivate properly when I switch to AirPods or Beats, so I have to drill down and back out after I've started a show.

Multiple rumors have indicated that Apple is working on a refreshed version of the Apple TV, and today, leaker Jon Prosser said that an updated 4K Apple TV model is "ready to ship."

appletv4k2.jpg

According to Prosser, the Apple TV 4K will feature an A12X chip and 64 or 128GB storage options. The new Apple TV 4K could "drop any time," but Prosser does not know details on a specific launch date.

Signs of a new Apple TV were spotted in the iOS 13.4 beta in January, and at the time, it was believed it would feature an A12 chip. Prior rumors also suggested the same 64 and 128GB storage sizes mentioned by Prosser.

Beyond the new processor, we're not expecting major changes to the Apple TV. There have been signs of a new Apple TV with an updated remote in leaked iOS 14 code, but it's not clear if the new Apple TV that's rumored to be coming soon will feature remote control updates.

Prosser this week also said that Apple has a new iMac and AirPods ready to ship, but he did not provide additional details on these particular products.

please be right! I’ve been waiting all year for this to be released. I’m done with the Fire TV interface that crashes every day.

Awesome, thanks everyone for responding!

I feel if I get an Apple TV, I should probably get a modern 4K TV to take advantage of the perks.

If they want to be serious about this, they'll release a proper game controller.

Considering they released a proper keyboard with trackpad for the ipad, I think there's a chance it will happen. Apple held on to the minimalist religion for too long, but they're starting to value ergonomics again.

Well it has Apple Arcade, performance will take a hit over time.
Fair point, but if you game on the Apple TV, spending the extra $30 to get the 4K with a much better GPU seems like a no brainer.

I definitely need a new one. Mine is slow as hell.
Which one do you have? I have a 4K in the living room and an older 4 in the bedroom and I still find them both super speedy (and much faster than using the integrated smart TV functions on either of those televisions).

This guy claims he reported this months ago

Apple hinted at this a year and a half ago.

"... It's unheard of in this form factor, this is really an Xbox One S class GPU. And again, it's in a completely fanless design. ..."

It was more a matter of when they were going to drop it into the AppleTV ( when affordable enough and aready 'paid for' ) ; not if.
