The rumored 15-inch Mac notebook that Apple is working on might not be called the "MacBook Air," according to information shared today on Twitter by well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Recent rumors have indicated that Apple is working on a larger-screened version of the MacBook Air that could measure in at around 15 inches and that would be sold alongside the 13-inch MacBook Air. The updated machine is expected to come out sometime in 2023, but if Kuo is accurate, it might not be in the MacBook Air family.

Kuo does not supply a possible naming alternative, but Apple has in the past used the "MacBook" name on a standalone basis for some of its Mac options. The last "MacBook" was the 12-inch MacBook that was discontinued in 2019.

Though Apple might go with another name, Kuo says the company is still aiming to use the same 30W power adapter that the MacBook Air uses as a power source, despite the larger screen. "Although a larger display generally consumes more power, the design goal is to use the same 30W power adapter as MacBook Air," Kuo writes.

Rumors yesterday from display analyst Ross Young suggested that the 15-inch machine would come out in 2023, and Kuo further narrows down the timeframe by suggesting that mass production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2023.

I'd be astounded to see something like the air get a 15" display size. never want to gate someone away from something they may found useful, though I imagined the Air line to be as portable as possible...

I would order this in a heartbeat, got a M1 Air but coming from a 15.6" Dell just find it a touch too small and as a result just use it as a hobby / backup device at the moment to learn Mac more than anything

Although I'll probably give in and order a 16" Pro before 2023!

I never liked the name MacBook much. It is descriptive, and ok, but not very mellifluous. Has a harsh sound.

Mac-book. Mac: sounds like quack or wack (harsh). Followed by book, has motion but is just a bit strange. Then again this comment is strange :D

Powerbook of course was very cool, but too generic.

We been saying this for awhile. Seriously the current MBA and MBP13 are almost identical. If you redesign the ultra-lightweight laptop line they won’t just be a simple run-of-the-mill update. Its not just sticking a M2 in it. Thats not good enough.

Ditching the tapered design and adding a 15-inch option makes the “Air” name seem less fitting. Would not be surprised to see both the 13-inch and 15-inch just called “MacBook”, with the 15-inch basically assuming the role that the base model 13-inch Pro currently does (plugging the price gap between 13-inch consumer and 14-inch Pro). Also means they can keep the current Air around as an affordable option, particularly for education customers, and not have two concurrent designs called “Air”.

MacBook Air (M1) - $999

MacBook (M2, 13-inch) - $1,199/1,299
MacBook (M2, 15-inch) - $1,399/1,499

MacBook Pro (14-inch) - $1,999
MacBook Pro (16-inch) - $2,499

As the iPad Air makes less and less sense in terms of naming convention, the Air moniker might need to disappear for good.

I had dreamed of an iPhone Air, but it might not be necessary after all.
