Something doesn't adds up. This will be too much of a good value to be true. Apple will find a way to mess it up somehow and force us to buy the 16 MPB.
Don't think the 16" Pro is really a factor. This is for people who would never consider spending $2.5K on a laptop anyway, but may well spend $1.5K provided they can get the larger screen at that size. Similarly, anyone who is looking at the 16" will most likely want the XDR ProMotion display and the extra power so won't be considering a 15" Air, even if it is much cheaper.

There are 16" PC laptops as well. Probably not as many 16" models as the 17" size, but still available.

Asus ROG Zephyrus M16
HP Spectre x360 16
HP Omen 16
HP Victus 16.1
16" is more of a small bezel variant of the 15" class than a true alternative to a 17" desktop replacement. Similar to how 14" just fits a bit more screen into what would have been considered a 13" chassis size a decade ago. I haven't yet seen anyone go with an 18" variant of some of these huge gaming laptops but it could easily be done now in a machine no bigger than a 17" was just a few years ago. I guess at that size shrinking the chassis around the screen is considered more of a benefit than an extra inch of display, but for something that's going to sit on a desk approaching 100% of the time I think it would work as a sort of portable in a pinch desktop alternative. Particularly now 1440p is becoming the norm, 1080p would have been stretched too thin at 18".

How about the

“MacBook Kuo“

or

“MacBook Prosser”?! ?

——————————————

Won't it be confusing — and extremely unusual — for Apple to have 13”, 14”, 15”, and 16” laptops in the line-up at the same time??

Each with somewhat similar, yet different features that require a handbook, MacRumors article, or buyer's guide to understand…

All that will confuse the prospective buyer or average consumer. Just picture the scene at a Best Buy when Joe Average asks Best Buy Bill what the differences are among the 14”, 15”, and 16”, and hears gobbledygook!

We may understand the nuances, but the average customer will not.

Too many similar devices, especially if the iconic, tapered front edge of the Air goes.

The screen sizes are much too similar. Did Apple ever have 13”, 14”, 15”, and 16” laptops in the line-up at the same time??

Worse, there will be overlapping features, blatantly omitted ones, or crippled feature sets.

If Jobs came back, he'd simplify the line-up dramatically. And, I'm usually one to pooh-pooh the “Jobs walks on water“, could do no wrong, RDF delusions.

This 15" Macbook or Macbook Air or whatever Apple wants to call it but one thing we can take from it is Apple embracing larger screen trend in it's products because most consumers like it, want it and willing to pay for.

Whatever it is called, it should be much cheaper than the 16” MacBook Pro. Many would be happy to buy the new 15” MacBook.

Also as per rumour, production in Q4 2023, so might not be launched till early 2024. A long time from now.

So, it is looking like Apple is now planning a 13" and 15" MacBook. Expect white bezels and a notch, but a normal retina screen. The MacBook Air will likely remain 13" and retain its wedge shape, with updated internals, Magsafe 3, and likely a notch to include a better camera, likely 1080P. It is logical to assume that the MacBook and MacBook Pro will likely see the same camera system as used in the modern iPads, including Center Stage, in the next generation.

Should just be called MacBook, its strange there are variants of a device that has no base. i.e. MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro, with no MacBook.

Agreed.

Call the 15" the MacBook; and the lighter, more portable 13" the MacBook Air

Yeah they’ll probably call it just MacBook. Makes sense to have something in between an Air and a Pro.

People dismissed my idea of renaming the MacBook Air replacement(s) as just MacBook. ?‍♂️ But now that the idea of an M2-based 13.3" MacBook Pro has (likely) gone by the wayside, using just plain MacBook now makes a lot of sense.

Don’t care what it’s called. I want the 15” model. Apple could name it in ancient Latin and I’d still buy it.

Macbook Rubicon
Macbook Legion
Macbook Consul
Macbook Emperor
Macbook Colosseum

The name is irrelevamt to my expected purchase.

finally!

Looks great theoretically on paper, but doesn't make much sense at all with the extent of the product lineup they have. Let's take the iPad lineup, for example - you would only have two models, regular and Pro? What happens to the Air or mini?
Exactly. It doesn’t make sense because the product lineup doesn’t make sense. Clearly, it’s working for Apple and, thus, I don’t expect it to change. That said…

To me, the monkey wrench is the term “air.” What, exactly, is it supposed to mean and/or distinguish and where does Air sit in their tablet lineup? Is it that much lighter than an iPad? That much thinner? How different is it than iPad? It’s not clear. It’s not intuitive. Causes confusion.

So iPad lineup… As I stated, keep the mini because 1) everyone knows what “mini” means, 2) knows what to expect from a mini form factor and 3) the mini iPad rocks. ? Most anyone can follow, and knows what to expect of, the following chain; iPad mini, iPad, iPad Pro. Small, medium, large. Without any further descriptors, most anyone can grasp the general purpose of each iPad. Understand what to expect from each tier. Now toss in the iPad Air into the mix… Where does an Air sit? Between iPad mini and iPad? Between iPad and iPad Pro? Again, what does “Air” designate? Just combine the iPad & iPad Air into one. And call it iPad. Crazy. Courageous.
