new iphone rumors to distract the macbook fiasco, interesting move, Apple.

I think the dock will be nearly permanent, down where the Home button bezel is now, with a software Home button surrounded by the usual 4 customizable icons. Thus the effective screen size for apps will be smaller than the display. Some apps might be able to hide the dock and go full display but it probably won't be the default.

We still _might_ have a physical button somewhere, perhaps sleep/wake will still exist, and can be used to bring up the hidden dock, or do emergency resets etc.

well based on the article Apple has no supplier that can produce the 100+ million they need - at the quality they want - Apple would probably want a DCI-P3 pressure sensitive screen and those must very difficult to make.

They can either wait 2 years to stock up on screen inventory or release what they have - will see.

I understand the supply constraints. Either way, it sucks for the consumer, especially those who prefer the smaller model.

Certainly not correct all the time. No thinner MPBs in 2014. No debatable MagSafe gadget at 2016 MBP event. To name a few. And his sales number predictions are always wrong.[/QUOTE
He is the most active analyst when it comes to the apple pipeline. Rumors belong on a rumor site.
OLED now is not OLED 5 years ago, so waiting for the tech to be perfected (they were pretty bad until last 2 years) and yields/quality go higher (Apple needs to produce more than 1 million phone) before actually using it IS WHAT APPLE DOES.

Seems you actually have no clue what Apple's philosophy actually is.
so tell us. What is apples design philosophy?

Fragmentation.

Google just released a great phone that is feature constant across size. Apple wants to fragment and see how much a premium it can get on a new feature phone. I hope that does not turn out to be true. Sometimes a little less profit and some goodwill can be worth a lot long term.

If you needed absolute proof about how lackluster Apple product releases are these days it's when Apple rumor sites like this start to rumor the next product very shortly after the current release is finally shipping.

It is obvious people are more excited about Apple's possibilities then the reality of their results.

Also, we need a touch-bar on new iPhone!
I think LG already beat them to the punch. ;)

Can't wait for the new iP8 with Touch Bar (c) technology on the back, and the non-active OLED screen on the front - no worries about fingerprint smudges on the central screen....;)

This is quite out of character, but there are rumors about a similar case with the iPad next year.

Possibly another attempt by Tim Cook to drive people towards the expensive model so their revenue numbers will be better.

Then again, it's one of many sets of final designs that could be released.

5.8" screen with only 5.1-5.2 area being touch sensitive? Is this another one of those features from the same basket which contained the idea to have speaker holes at the top of the new Macbook, but actual speakers being located closer to the touchpad?

Yes, you got it. And therefore it is making the sound quality of the new machines greatly suffering from this terrible design!
You know, the only hope left for Apple is to start recruiting some of the brightness minds who happen to be right here in MacRumors forum.

So if am getting this correctly, does this mean the end of bezels as they'd be replaced with non-touch screen for non-interactive purposes?
The curved part is non active until you drop it. Then the curve display part will crack and propagate the fissure across the active part of the display.

And case design should be interesting with no case on edges, maybe glue to hold case on back glass?

As a galaxy 7 edge owner, the wrap area is prone to false touches (and a bit of edge distortion too), so it makes sense that the "active" size may need to pull back a little around the edges.

More proof that the new Tim Cook Apple lacks solid, focused vision at the top. Products now are either Johnny Ive whimsy or Tim Cook bottom line designs. Three iPhone models based around screen size/type? No home button just press on the screen? AR Glasses? How about a computer to actually make stuff on?

Tim Cook is a numbers/operations guy. He has no real vision other than making more for less. The new MacBook Pro has less volume? Why is that important to me? Its important to a company that has to ship its products from China tho; more boxes (and lighter boxes) per container or airplane is cheaper per box (computer) and thus better margins for Apple. Less material per computer (Aluminum is rather expensive) is a win, too, hence thinner and less volume overall.

The Mac is doomed to just fade away as Apple focuses more and more on smaller, simpler, cheaper to produce and ship computing products that can still be sold for premium prices (30% plus margins).

Apple has been shedding Pro-level software and products for years as it becomes a consumer-only company of gadgets and small devices instead of a computer company.

The 5k iMac is a cop to people who want a desktop Mac with a big screen instead of a laptop. Don't expect a new Mac Pro or Mac Mini redesign, they may get spec bumps but they are on their way out.

Apple is widely rumored to release its first iPhone with an OLED display next year, but reports have been conflicting about its potential screen size.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said Apple will launch a 5.8-inch iPhone with a curved OLED display and glass casing next year, while Barclays analysts recently called for a 5-inch iPhone with a curved, bezel-free OLED display. Japanese website Nikkei also expects a new glass-backed 5-inch iPhone.

Now, in a new research note, Kuo said the much-rumored premium iPhone model will indeed have a 5.8-inch OLED panel, but with a smaller actual active display area of between 5.1 and 5.2 inches. Kuo said this is for "specific design purposes," which likely points towards a wraparound or curved display of some sort.Kuo reiterated the all-new OLED-based iPhone will be accompanied by new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones with traditional LCD displays.
