That's a good question. Could be a memory bug in the particular apps you use. Hard to say without knowing specifics. I doubt its a fault in your hardware, but remember that there is both the OS that is managing, and then the app itself which can have issues.

I'm sorry I can't help more, but have you tried writing to the developer of the particular app you're having issues with?

Yeah I've sent in reports before to them about it, but haven't seen any updates. Either way, more ram would never hurt the situation! :D

If the app is missusing it, it won't help much. It will just take a bit more time to crash. An App shouldn't crash because of low ram, run slower maybe, tell you it is running low on ram, but not crash.

By all means, I'm not against more RAM in new models (especially because the LPDDR4 is now out). I'm just tired of this forum jumping to "moar RAMz!" in response to any and all issues. No one matches the efficiency of Apple's memory management.

I understand it takes the memory, but what causes it to crash? I assume the tasks exceed the memory capacity of the device. Or do I just have a faulty iPad?

A an should never crash because of low memory unless it is programmed really badly. That's my opinion. Bad memory could cause a crash, but then you'd have an issue in most big apps (and especially Safari) on the Air 2.

Anyone else just underwhelmed with the "retina" display on the iPad minis? I don't know why but compared to the iPad Air's, the iPad Mini's display just seems a bit fuzzy/Not sharp?

I own both and while I wouldn't say it's less sharp, I do think the colors look flat due to lack of contrast.

Personally, with the iPad Air being so thin and light and with iPhones growing in size, I don't see much of a reason for Apple to continue investing in the mini.

You'd be surprised

Except that's not how memory management works in iOS at all....

That may not be how memory management works (in theory you don't have to close apps and iOS handles switching between states, etc). But in the real world, users need to do that to get the best performance out of some apps. It has to do with some apps not releasing memory or shutting down when moving into the background state. iOS tries to keep apps wired and ready to go, but the process of freeing up memory by closing apps takes time. If the current app is needing memory quickly, it can start hitting it's head on the limit and cause a crash.

What kind of app is going to need a show stopping amount of RAM in a few milliseconds that isn't designed to account for that?

I don't find apps that don't take account for their environmental constraints to be the fault of Apple, I find it to be lazy or negligent coding.

One alternative is to give each new model family (e.g., the iPhone 6) a name rather than a generation number. But the big challenge there is finding names that work well in multiple languages and cultures.

I'm thinking cats! Big cats!
Can we try cats again? iPad leopard? Just rolls in your mouth. :)

This looks promising. But if it's nothing but this new shell and a regular A8 chip, oh my gosh I will be pissed. If they fix the display and make it have the laminated, anti glare, super colorful display, and the A9X just like the full size iPad, I will be stoked. A8X would be pretty acceptable because it can actually handle the translucency of the UI and have more tabs/apps open, but it still would be dated, so... Not sure. Also not sure if I am a fan of the small screen size, now. Lately I have been liking the bigger screen of the regular iPads though... So I don't know.

how can the ipad mini have "design elements" from the ipad air 2 when the ipad air was inspired by the ipad mini? I think we are chasing our tails.

The Final Frontier

If Apple makes an iPad Mini 4 thinner than the 2 & 3 with an A9 CPU,
then that will be the last iPad I buy for years. Maybe ever ....

I'm at the point of my relationship with my iPad that unless some truly wonderful iPad-specific IOS changes occur ...I'll just continue to let it lie dormant in my desk drawer. For me, the iPhone 6 has unexpectedly filled the usage gap ...once dominated by my iPad. All these hardware revisions have simply become ZzzZZz inducing.

The main reason for not putting a A8X in the smaller mini may be heat, and battery considerations (and the fact there's less pixels to push). Its not like the Iphone 6 is suffering from performance issues... Maybe putting a A9 (which would be on a smaller process and would not have a crazy GPU in it like a A9X, would be better)

That is why you will never see it.

Not at all likely. The mini is the perfect size for reading e-books.

I read more books on my iPod Touch 5 then I read on my iPad Mini 2 because I can carry my Touch with me. The iPhone Plus would be a better e-reader choice then my Touch since it's portable with a big screen.

Two things I want:

- "True" multi-tasking
- Stereo Speakers (perhaps top and bottom - in landscape mode while watching a movie the speakers could engage to create a left and right audio spectrum)

I realize it's a small device for stereo sound, but other tablets do this well enough. I hate having to cusp my hand around the speakers when watching movies that could benefit from better speakers and placement.

It'd be nice to see some more software for iPad.
What? New apps arrive just about every day at the App Store.
I remember when the iPad 3 was launched and they showed off iPhoto... it felt like they had such faith in the iPad. Now we see hardware updates but no new apps.
Are you blind or maybe you don't know how to ghetto the App Store?
If they decided against OS X on a tablet, opting instead for writing new software from scratch, what more is coming? Final Cut Pro for iPad?
It is a platform just like the Mac, Apple will leave most development efforts with the third party developers.
