1. Open a third tab in the browser without all of them refreshing when switching between them
2. Open a fourth tab in the browser without all of them refreshing when switching between them
3. Open a fifth tab in the browser without all of them refreshing when switching between them

Having five tabs open at once is nothing unusual.

I can do #1 and #2 without any refreshing on my current Air. Never tried more than that since there is a limit, IMO to how many tabs I can deal with at once. I think most people, not all, fall into the use case category where 2-3 tabs is the max being actually used. In many cases it's likely one tab. Just saying.

As for this new ipad mini...will be extra thin and vibrate like crazy as the Air 2 does? Hope not, LOL. :D

It's less about concurrent use, but about looking up things or following links on pages, then returning, only to see that dreaded refresh (or worse: Safari crashing without warning when clicking on a link, as I recently experience regularly here on Macrumors with an iPad Air, even with only 5-6 tabs open).

And most users probably won't close a tab immediately after having used it, out of pure convenience.

So in theory 1GB Ram could perhaps be enough, but reality is different. And Apple better accepts that instead of cheaping out on such a central component as Ram.

Who cares about the Mini when Apple seems content to gimp it compared to the larger size one? I really wanted a Mini 3 but when I saw that they were just repackaging the same 2 from last year + touch ID I had to pass .. have to be a sucker to but that over a 2.

That is why you will never see it.

I read more books on my iPod Touch 5 then I read on my iPad Mini 2 because I can carry my Touch with me. The iPhone Plus would be a better e-reader choice then my Touch since it's portable with a big screen.

Certainly, it's your right to be different from me.

And vice versa. A lot of us find the Plus too big for a phone. That seems to be a fairly significant group of people. The mini size (which is about the same size as a Kindle) is the ideal size for curling up on a sofa with a book, or other focused reading. I understand that you may want to have a single device that serves every need and is always with you, but others use multiple devices with more focused purpose for each device.

What? New apps arrive just about every day at the App Store.

Are you blind or maybe you don't know how to ghetto the App Store?

It is a platform just like the Mac, Apple will leave most development efforts with the third party developers.

I meant first-party, obviously. There was already the best collection of tablet apps when Apple introduced iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand to iPad, so the App Store is not a reason for Apple to not develop more software, especially when it current develops Mac apps that aren't on iPad.

Why you felt the need to break my comment down and try and make me look like I didn't know what the App Store was, I don't know.

Get back to your two tabs later after using other apps, playing games, etc.
Many times even with just two tabs it will reload.
And it really sux when you were browsing a website that continuously scrolls to load more content (the verge, for example) or you want to continue watching a movie.

The same with games. Some games support the app freezing type multitasking of iOS... but it still reloads often regardless.

hopefully they will fix buzzgate

I can't use the iPad Air 2 with sound above 1/4 volume because it vibrates too much and is annoying to hold for any length of time.

I would have bought a Mini Air 2 if it was available, which is why Apple didn't sell it at the same time as the Air 2. When the original iPad Air and iPad Mini 2 came out they had matching specs and the Mini 2 stole a lot of sales from the larger and more expensive iPad Air. Apple won't repeat that mistake again so they are now going to stagger big model changes between their large and small iPads. Most likely if an iPad Pro comes out you will see 3 release dates spread out across the year for each of the 3 model ranges, cheaper models will gain the features after a more expensive model is released earlier in the year.

I mean the difference in price between an iPad and iPad Mini is pure profit, so if people are spending $100 less for a smaller iPad that has the same components, resolution and performance as the larger one, poor Apple is just going to lose profit releasing them at the same time.

Plus:
  • It should be as light as possible. The mini for example weighs in at ~50% more than a Kindle Paperwhite.
  • It should be easy on the eyes. Current illuminated e-Ink readers are so much better than the tablet LED's that tire the eye much faster any time of the day and try to burn out your eyeballs in low-light situations (in comparison).
  • It should be readable in bright environments / direct sunlight. I have no experience with the optically coated iPad Air 2 screen yet, but older iPads are simply unusable for reading when sitting outside on a sunny day.

While the iPhone 6-plus makes for a nice reader, I personally prefer the Kindle (owning a Keyboard and a Paperwhite).

As you're only reading text-based ebooks, I recommend you to try out the Kindle Paperwhite, which is very affordable at 99,-€ (currently an easter promo is running on Amazon Germany, offering a 20€ gift coupon on purchase).

If you don't like it, you simply send it back to Amazon. But if you do like it, I'd also recommend to get the original Kindle case from Amazon. While not exactly cheap, it helps with gripping the Kindle better and also adds more of that "book-feeling", by integrating a Sleep/Wake mechanism via magnets. Not to mention the protective aspect.

- Yes, the retina Mini I had did get a tad heavy at times, and it only made it worse that I couldn't palm it.

- I got used to keeping my devices on low brightness so I never have a problem with my eyes tiring during the day. And at night I use a blue light filter, so it's easy on the eyes at night too.

- I don't like being in direct sunlight anyway. I always look for shade. Also I don't read e-books outdoors very often.

And unfortunately my e-books are ibooks so I'm a little locked into the Apple ecosystem. An e-ink reader like a Kindle wouldn't work for me. Plus I prefer having additional tablet functionality like web browsing and apps, and again preferably iOS.
An iPhone 6 Plus-sized iPod Touch would be an acceptable e-reader/tablet size, although a little on the small side. But I don't see Apple making that in the near future. And I'm definitely not paying no $900 for an iPhone 6 Plus just to use as an extra casual device haha.

Does the Mini 4 need to have the A9 chip for potential customers to feel satisfied with their purchase or would the A8X chip suffice? I'd personally like to see them put the A9 in there but perhaps not update it for 18 months or something then so as not to cannibalize the Air's sales too much. I love my Mini 2 and want to get the Mini 4 but will be disappointed if they only put the A8 in it.

full colour gamut

The last update to the 'mini' was a great let down as the majority seem to agree.

I can only hope the next update makes a priority of the display reaching closer to the 'full colour gamut' it deserves; currently missing from the mini. For a company that makes such quality products this is a MAJOR omission and one I actually notice every single day as I use the device alongside my other Apple products. It truly is dull and lifeless compared to my iPhone6, MBP retina and thunderbolt cinema display.
