In line with the 3rd generation iPad being called 'The New iPad', wouldn't be surprised if the 'iPad mini' is simply called 'The Smaller iPad'.

The 3rd generation iPad isn't called "The New iPad" - it's just called iPad. "The" is just a definite article, and "new" is just an adjective. Kind of like "the new MacBook Pro".

yet another apple event that will be boring, with no surprises because we already know whats coming, even down to the size of screw their going to use, all down to leaks from various suppliers and stool pigeons, I used to love the surprise at events, now i dont even bother to watch them

Not according to its release back in March. And it's still called 'The new iPad' on Apple's website. I know what you're saying, but this is what Apple announced it as, and still refers to it as. Colloquially, it's the iPad 3.

iMessage in iPad mini?

Will the iPad mini be able to send messages to iPhones, iPads and iPods via iMessages like so in the true iPad?

Argh! I know, why can't that bit of info leak out like EVERYTHING else seems to have done.

Well doesn't matter really - you wouldn't be able to order it for weeks after the announcement anyway :)

Like every idevice - the OS - ios 6 or whatever - will be the same even though the footprint of the device itself is smaller - I am sure the iPad mini will have all bells and whistles IOS6 brings.

He is right. The iPad is technically - iPad (3rd Generation).
"The new iPad" was just marketing.
"iPad 3" is just used by idiots who can't realise that iPad 13 in the year 202X is a really dumb idea.

It's only called new cause it is new. When the iPad (4th Generation) is released that'll be new cause it is new. And so on and so on.

Don't come to these sits and then you'll be surprised. :)

Seriously if there were no rumors or leaks a site like this wouldn't have much reason for existing.

The part where they show off the hardware is never boring, even if you know what's coming. The boring part is the beginning when they do the infernal impress-the-stockholders BS with pie charts and brag about having sold one billion trillion gazillion apps and songs. That part just makes me wanna gouge my eyes out. Why start a potentially exciting event with an intro that's so boring you need defibrillators to wake up the audience for the juicy part?

You mean like the idiots who refer to the iPhone 5 as "iPhone 5" and iOS 6 as "iOS 6"?

Yes, which is a retarded nomenclature since the previous generation is rendered nameless.
"Which iPad do you have?"
"The iPad."
"Yeah but which one?"
"The iPad. It was called the New iPad up until yesterday but now they have newer New iPad so mine is no longer new."
"So you have the Old New iPad?"
"No, that's what the used to call the one before mine when mine came out. I guess I have the New Old New iPad, then."
"Ahem", says a pompous bystander, "I believe you are referring to what we in the geek community call the '4th G -'"
"Don't say it dude."
"The 4th G -'
"Don't say it. Don't say 'Gen'".
"The 4th Gen"
(Bystander beaten to a bloody pulp and forced to eat his own intestines)

They did the same thing for the 2010 MacBook Air. They had this great big banner proclaiming "The New MacBook Air". Yet it's still just MacBook Air.

"The new" is not part of the name for cripes sake.

Like all Macs before it. Yet it's not that hard to differentiate between those now is it ? Same for iPods...

The iPhone is the last remaining naming anomaly in Apple's line-up.

Yeah, except once iPods and Macs are replaced with new generations, the previous ones vanish without a trace. With iPads and iPhones they've kept the previous generations around as entry-level models. The last two years they've been selling 3 generations of iPhones simultaneously. 3GS/4/4S, and now they carry 4/4S/5. How would they differentiate those in if each new generation would just be called "iPhone"? That's an Abbott & Costello sketch waiting to happen.

The refurbished store says you lie. So does the iPod Touch.

I'm sorry this is all so confusing to you, but for your average consumer, it's perfectly clear. iPad is iPad. They walk in and buy an iPad. Same as they would if they wanted a MacBook or an iPod.

"The new" is not part of the name, just like 2010's The new MacBook Air! is a plain MacBook Air. The new just meant that it was new in 2010 when they announced it.

If you strip the 4, 4S and 5 designations away from the iPhone's name, it's all "perfectly clear"?
"Hi, I'd like an iPhone please, white with 32 GB".
Without the model names the above sentence would apply to any of 3 products on the shelf. Two of which look identical (4/4S). These are phones, not Macs where you can go all anal-retentive with options. They're phones for the average consumer. If you don't have the model names you have to tell long stories about generations, A4 vs A5 chip etc.

Edit: Fine, so they only offer the 8GB iPhone 4 and the 16GB 4S. The only overlap is 16GB 4S/5.

Sure. Not one single average consumer has been confused in the slightest by the fact that Apple offers one model called "iPad" and another called "iPad 2", but the "2" is the older/lesser of the two.

Oh dear God. The name thing, again. I have absolutely no idea why some people get so hung up on this.

How is that any different from the MacBook Pro or any other Apple product except the iPhone? I don't say "I have MacBook Pro 16", I say "I have a MacBook Pro". If someone asks me WHICH MacBook Pro, I say "early 2011 model."

There, not so hard.

It's not, some people are just easy to confuse it seems. They probably gasp in awe when they click the refurb store. So confusing, all those different MacBooks/iPods/iPads...

I think the goal posts in this discussion have moved beyond the horizon and I'm partly guilty since my Abbott & Costello sketch with the New Old New iPad was beside the original point, i.e. my response to the claim that only idiots refer to the new iPad as the iPad 3. The reason it's colloquially known as iPad 3 is that the "idiots" at Apple deemed it appropriate to market the previous model as the iPad 2. If they make up their minds on whether to assign numbers to iPads and iPhones or not, I'm sure we'll all be fine.

still dont think it will be ipads off any form

maybe just new macs,
and updates to mac software

if apple were to offer a new ipad mini, and refreshed ipad. to target the holiday shopping season, how do they plan to pull that off?
they always, always have massive delays with new ipads. they quickly fall back to 3-4 weeks.

Merry Xmas kids, your new ipad is due next month!
yay

Couldn't disagree with you more. I know what's being said about it being the latest, but the fact is if I walk into an Apple store and say: "I'd like an iPad, please", I'll then be given two choices: the 'iPad 2' or 'The new iPad'. That's what it's called at the moment according to Apple: 'The new iPad'.

When the next iPad comes out, the current 'new iPad' will probably be known as 'iPad 3', '3rd iPad', or even the 'iPad 2012'. Something like that.

Right now it's officially called: 'The new iPad'.

I shake my head to people who really think these so called "iPad mini's" will have retina and LTE....

No Retina for sure. But they have to have LTE. Didn't Verizon say that they won't allow any new 3G devices from now on?

Or will it be WiFi only?

iPad video shown at the keynote Scott Brodrick says:
"The retina display on the 3rd generation iPad". Around 1:30 into the video.
Everyone else on the video calls it the new iPad. But every iPad will be "the new iPad" when it's released. It's just a marketing thing.

Also there is this:
iPad-3-box.jpg

iPad (3rd generation) box. The box just says iPad. Not "the new iPad".

I think my point is proven. It's just called new cause it is new. But the official name is just "iPad". The 3rd generation part is just there to distinguish it from other models.

iPad 3 or the new iPad or whatever are just ways to differentiate it from the iPad 2. Commonly used names for the product but not the official name.

Understood. But point not proven to me.

Package says :iPad. Agree. But so does the 2nd version of the iPad: 'iPad'. And it's officially called the 'iPad 2' but boxes label it as 'iPad'.

My point as I stated earlier is "The new iPad" is only a common name that is used to differentiate it from the iPad 2. We all use colloquial terms for things all the time. Even Apple does. It's official name is just "iPad". You can tack on 3rd generation if you want. But not sure if that is part of the official name or just a way to differentiate with iPad 2.

In that case we agree to disagree. Your point is not proven to me. And my point is not proven to you. But I'll leave it at that.

...

Seriously. I think we need to go a step further and drop the hammer on this one, some people just don't want to get it otherwise.

"The New" is standard Apple marketing. "iPad" is the product name. Now, this is just like :

thenew.PNG
"The New" is standard Apple marketing. "MacBook Air" is the product name.
thenew2.PNG
"The New" is standard Apple marketing. "iMac" is the product name.
thenew3.PNG
"The New" is standard Apple marketing. "iPod Nano" is the product name.

I can go on if you're still "unconvinced", but at this point, I think my point is proven : Some guys just never will admit to being so utherly wrong.
