4 GB SO-DIMMs are horrifically expensive due to the density required compared to a DIMM.Wooo 16GB Ram in the top end iMac 16GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB [+ £1,120.00]!!!

Not obtuse. I certainly wouldn't watch 18"-30" away and I don't know many who would although at that distance, you're absolutely correct in that there is a big difference. Seems that it would be "cost-prohibitive" for them to offer it and stay in their current price range.
It's about $250 a stick for 4 GB DDR3-1066 SO-DIMMs elsewhere. A $200 premium today isn't THAT bad but it'll just get progressively worse until the next update. So is this about the right price for that amount of ram then?
It's still horrifically over priced to get a quad core Mac. A Core i5 750 in the $1,699 model would have been more proper. What are your thought on the upgraded i7 iMac spec and price?
I don't think cost had anything to do with it. The 16:9 format is clearly designed for better movie watching experience and early rumors were that the drive was coming with this refresh.
The cost difference between a slim line DVD burner and a slim line DVD burner with BD-ROM capability is about $99. For Apple it would probably cost less than 1/2 that.
I really want that 27" iMac with 8GB of Ram and an i7 chip. Now I'm gonna have to wait till April of 2010 and hope they get a damn BD drive out then.

Mobile Core 2 Quad has been out for over a year now.It is but i must admit i didn't think we would see this happening till next year. Still no matte option on them though which is silly as surely a 27inch screen would be prefect for photographers etc. I shall just wait and see them in person once they trickle through to the Apple stores. I might pick one up on refurb (i7) but im not paying almost £1800 ($3000) for a brand new one.
I don't really get why they went 16:9, as if iMac was the ideal platform for HD movies (nevermind the absence of Blu-ray). I never watch movies on my iMac, I either do it on my MBP which I can bring where I want, or the Mac Mini plugged into my TV, the iMac is a very, um, computerish computer, tied to a desk, not something you gather around with popcorn...
Also, when will these guys learn of rechargeable batteries? A new power gobbling BT mouse with old skool batteries... again? "Just flick the switch to save power"? How modern. Meh.

Apple can't market nearly pointless clock speed under Nehalem/Westmere either because the speeds drop and Turbo Boost takes over.
US$700 buys you a Core i5 tower elsewhere and a 27" IPS monitor isn't that hard to get a hold of. The LED backlight is very nice but not something that is limited to Apple forever. Though they probably have enough clout to swamp the market with their orders for months.
Smaller e-IPS or h-IPS displays are an option as well instead of going for 27".
Here's my prediction:
- Thinner iMac, quad core on the high end, no Blu-ray
- Speed bumped Mac Mini
- Redesigned MacBook
- New Mouse
- New keyboard with trackpad
My TV has a DVI-I port so I just plug it in like I would a monitor. it's a 46" LCD Fujitsu-Siemens that's all aluminum and looks very Apple, and the Mini fits under either side of the screen, within the millimeter. I don't get 5.1 sound, obviously, but HD res and very good picture quality. What is your preferred methid of connecting the mini to your TV, keeping in mind both audio and video. Can't do HDMI because the DisplayPort adaptors don't do audio.....So is it DsiplayPort to Composite and Digital Audio outs?
Sounds like a reguritation of what every apple rumor site has just about been reporting for the past several few weeks?
