I wonder if they'll put the power button and or the volume buttons on the top of the Fold so as to avoid a mess of buttons on the side when it's closed. Maybe they'll forgo a camera control button on this one to simplify the situation.

Someone made a nice comparison of what the iPhone fold displays will look like compared to other foldable devices. Although I’d definitely prefer a larger display, I do think they are making the right move with the aspect ratio and in the end, that could be more useful in day to day use than having a larger screen.

What will be very interesting is to see how the rest of the industry reacts. All of the Android phones have settled on tall narrow cover screens with more square internal displays. With Apple going a completely different route, I’m sure at least some of the competition will be adapting their designs.

What a great comparison! Thanks for posting this video. And yeah, it’s a great way for Apple to differentiate the device from all other foldables as they are almost all indeed those tall cover displays with square inner displays.

Apple seems to be going for the full iPad inner display experience with the correct aspect ratio. I think it’s the right direction, as Apple places the focus on the inner display (which is the entire idea of a foldable), while others seem to focus more on the outer display being a normal phone size.

The Huawei Pura X is one of the few that does the same:

The new iPhone might actually be more like a wide and large flip phone instead of a book foldable like the Z Fold. I used the iPad Mini mostly in portrait mode instead of landscape too.

Bringing some more mystery here is today's report saying 5.25in outer display and 7.58in inner display. Anyone want to mock that up as it seems like losing the .25in could make it look very different?

I created another one in comparison to the iPhone Air:

View attachment 2562806

The idea behind the larger camera plateau is because when you see the internals of the Air, a second camera next to it would take up too much space, so below it would make more sense. Also not having a 3rd camera leaves more room for the brains of the device and then the rest of the bottom and the other screen side can be completely batteries.

Regarding the hinge, I think other manufacturers would've come up with something really innovative already, as Apple is more of perfecting instead of innovating at this time. But I hope they can surprise us.
This render is lining up nicely with the new "large base" rumor from today.

And another comparison to show that Apples strategy is to have the main focus on optimising the unfolded experience. The folded experience is secondary, which sounds like a good idea to me. If you focus mainly on the folded experience like the Galaxy Fold, the unfolded experience is compromised, while the entire goal of a foldable is to get the best use out of it unfolded.

Man, if these are accurate then I definitely won't be getting myself one. Too wide with the screen folded for my taste. Guess I'll be looking out for the trifold in another five or ten years.

Haha, brilliant!

See this is why sometimes I think 'confirmed' rumours are just recycled from something months ago. It's just this time I know exactly where those schematics came from ... me!

Thanks for giving me a heads up;)

EDIT: it's hilarious to dump that image into Google Image search and see quite how far it spread. With great power comes great responsibility, I guess.

Can you post wallpaper

It's just the default wallpaper for MacOS Monterey

the sizes and mock ups just make me more excited to get one
Same here. Apple is about to nail the form factor on this foldable. It's going to be a pleasure to type on both opened and closed.

If the dimensions from the OP ring true, (and I do believe they will end up being super close in the end), then we are essentially looking at the Oppo Find N2 but 1/2" shorter and 1" wider (when opened).

When closed, it should be super close in width to the first-generation Google Pixel Fold.

Agreed! They definitely nailed the form factor. Now it’s a matter of software and durability. Hopefully Apples R&D team has figured out a way to make the inner screen more robust. Hopefully they can also find a way to give us some sort of Apple Pencil support, though I highly doubt that will make the 1st Gen.

Software wise, most modern apps are universal so I would assume Apple can just let apps run on iPad mode when the device is open. The scaling of apps for the front display might be the bigger issue…

For me the big thing comes down to watching content and scaling websites, if we believe the 7.76" 2713x1920 inner display it will be significantly better for watching widescreen content than the Fold 7 is even when turned into landscape.

Also most websites seem to scale based on the width so the more square-ish aspect ratio of the foldables I've had meant I actually could view less of the vertical page than on my slabphone. The iPad Mini was great for that because you could just flip it into portrait for web browsing which I guess will work the same for the iPhone fold.

My most significant contribution to the human race.

Shame it's out-of-date to the current rumours - but maybe some other random forum user did that too!
Hahaha you will probably have many more contributions to come!

I think many more people have been inspired now to create even more CAD models of the foldable and print it out. I’m curious to see how the design will evolve as more rumors come in.

Without reading all the replies how bad does this apple folding phone look? And those pro iPhone colours for 2026 I really worry sales will be low!

Jon 'Tosser' just posted a folding iPhone video. His render is terrible and he claims the power button will be above the volume buttons, which I find hard to believe.

Legit think he's just making stuff up to stay relevant at this point.

With all the fun I had yesterday seeing a bunch of people accidentally 3D printing my CAD plans, I thought I would do a little update to my renders. I still haven't changed the size, but I did redo the 3D model to make it look like an iPhone Air, since like @deuxani I think it could follow that design language - i.e. they'll both be Titanium, and ultra thin. So I remodelled it a bit and re-textured it to basically make it 'iPhone Air' polished. It's still the same size though, I really don't know what rumours to believe about the sizes yet. I also changed my rendering engine from Unreal to Enscape. (long story, I'm pretending to be an Indie Game Dev and wanted to test the Unreal render output)

Anyway, silly question, round corners:

roundy.png

In the last renders it made sense to me because there was lots of round features intersecting - but the glass MagSafe window ended up only appearing on the Pros. If it's designed with a full glass back like the Air, it doesn't seem as obvious. The Macbooks have round corners on the top and squared on the bottom so it's not unheard off that Apple would articulate some corners differently.

With all that said - basically which do people prefer, round corners on the spine or sharp?

EDIT: a very reasonable mixed version like the Google Pixel Fold - I'll call it ... Googly

Sorry, this is like a game of spot the difference!
