Pieces of "This Side"??

Since I've cycled through about 40 podcasts in the last week I doubt I could find the audio again but it was from the Firefly Talk podcast. I've heard enough of the Joss conferences now to know his jokes from the serious comments. How he brings them back is the mystery. A prequel seems like a good way to do it, but Joss has many tricks up his sleeve. It's possible that Serenity is the middle story and the prequel deals with Book's secret while the sequel deals with Inara's secret.

I could see flashbacks but I don't see flashbacks being that prominent in a feature film, especially since his tone seemed to indicate that they wouldn't be just bit parts.

As I said the prequel idea is just my theory, I'm most likely wrong, but I thought I would share.

Maybe I'll run across the clip on FF Talk. I find it hard to believe Joss would say something so firm, though, especially not knowing if the actors who play Wash and Book would even be available at that time (though I'm sure they'd like to be). And Joss has said other things that seemed non-joking that suggest the story goes on into the future, not the past: like mentioning that he has ideas for Jubal Early. (Also, flashbacks need not be a bit part: they could tell a significant story with even more screen time than the Shepherd got in Serenity.)

Not entirely sure if the spelling/translation is correct but here is a .pdf of many useful Chinese phrases found in our beloved show/movie.

Edit : Keep in mind what they use Chinese for in the show and remember that the PDF may not be entirely family/work friendly...

Not exactly work-safe some of those. But then, as I'm not technically allowed to use the internet anyway, it's all relative.:cool:
 
Why do I think "useful" is not going to be the best word to describe the Chinese on Firefly :p

Ah yes... "engage in a feces-hurling contest with a monkey." Every traveler should be ready with this phrase.

That is a funny list, I never knew that Chinese people were so creative with their insults. Many of those would be funny if they were just spoken in english. Maybe not in this forum, but just for humors sake, they would be fun to use.

Don't blame the Chinese, blame Joss Whedon :D That stuff is all made up.

The Firefly DVDs have a funny interview with the show's Chinese translator, was asked to translate some phrases she NEVER thought she'd be paid to work with :)

The funny thing is some international versions where they translated the Chinese along with the English. You're not SUPPOSED to know what those outbursts mean, and it sounds a little distracting to include them!

The real victim here is the Chinese-speaking children who heard this stuff broadcast during prime time on Fox :eek:

This is the main reason why we really have to do away with the advertising-based broadcast model of television. Wouldn't it be amazing if the studios produced content for the sake of entertaining us, instead of simply trying to bring in the most advertising dollars?

You get better strange looks if you learn to say them in Chinese. At that point they are even work safe (provided you don't work with anyone who speaks Chinese).

Wow.

I saw Serenity on the plane back from Nigeria earlier this week. I'd never seen Firefly (don't hurt me!) ... but Serenity blew me away!

It's what the new Star Wars films could only ever dream of being! I had a bit of a 'total immersion' moment on the plane... During the 'float like a leaf' flying scene, the plane hit some beefy turbulence... it blended in so well with the film that I almost let out a shout of "woohoooo!". That probably wouldn't have gone down too well with the other passengers who were all looking a little queasy :)

The sound dropped out on the film in quite a few places, so as soon as I got home I ordered the DVD. I'm gonna watch it tonight.

Can't believe I've missed out on this for so long!
 
Definitely try to see the Firefly series if you can. I think you enjoy Serenity so much more when you have that foundation. Glad you liked it! :)

I've just checked my DSAT box's programme guide, and it doesn't look like any UK channel's currently repeating Firefly (does anyone know different?).

It's a shame the US TV (well, the networks) market is quite so cut-throat. Most of the really great US shows we get here seem to come from US subscription channels (HBO, Showtime, SciFi). Our free-to-air terrestrial Channel Four seem to get quite a few HBO shows.

Over here, the pay-for channels are generally pretty low-budget when it comes to their own programming, although British Sky Broadcasting have redeemed themselves in my mind by co-financing the amazing Battlestar Galactica. It's more often than not that it's our BBC that is a little more daring (if I remember rightly, Rome was a BBC co-production). It's such a shame that Firefly couldn't find a 'white knight' in the form of another US network, a UK broadcaster, or even the Canadian Alliance-Atlantis who seem to be a quite brave with Sci Fi commissioning.

(I'm sure none of the above is anything that hasn't driven long-term Firefly fans insane, but humour me... I'm new to the show!)

I've been watching the DVD extras, and the cast seem to give the impression that Serenity isn't 'the end'. Are there any rumblings about a followup film, miniseries, or even a resurrection of the series?

I'm off to bug the living daylights out of my friend who works at our Channel 5... she works in the department that costs and recommends purchases of imported shows. I nagged her about how Five should get the excellent series 'House', and lo-and-behold, it appeared on Five. I'll demand she somehow gets hold of repeat rights to Firefly :)

... or I'll just, you know, buy the DVD. Would probably be easier!

(edit: .... damn, damn, and thrice damn! I've got myself into a full-on geek-out now...

- Downloaded Serenity desktop background? (check!)
- Bought soundtrack from iTunes Music Store? (check!)
- Reading page after page about the show on Wikipedia? (check!)
- Realised that Wash is Steve The Pirate (aarrgh!) from Dodgeball? (check!)
- Confirmed that Mal is indeed Canadian (ah, those delicious vowels!) (check!)


*grin*. I've stuck Firefly on my Amazon Rentals list... I'll no doubt buy the series later!
 
Yes, there are rumblings of any/all of those things. But ONLY rumblings--Joss Whedon has said basically "something might happen someday but no decision will be made on that any time soon."

All these newcomers discovering Serenity/Firefly because of the DVDs will surely help though :)

I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much as you did :eek:

(BTW, a reminder in case anyone doesn't know already: Firefly comes BEFORE the movie if you want to get the story in order. Firefly is just 4 DVDs--worth renting or buying. I loved the movie but I actually like Firefly better, simply because you can DO more with a story if you have more time. The two fit together perfectly though--same characters, same ship.)

Don't forget the graphic novel "Serenity: Those Left Behind" which joins the series and the film together. The damned thing got me back into comics again and I now have a stack of graphic novels to read. Too old to be rediscovering my inner geek...:eek:

I rented the normal version.

Then purchased the widescreen version.

Love the widescreen version the best.

This is one of the few movies that totally captivated me and kept me interested throughout.
 
On a Mac/Serenity related point, The Signal released yesterday (3/1) has an interesting interview on it. Some chick, Sheena Easton or something like that. Anyway, she made a song about Serenity. But, more importantly, she made it on Garageband. About half the interview is "Oh you made it on GarageBand? Yeah, it was so easy to use! Apples make everything so easy..."

Oh, I bet, it would be funny to use a few of the more creative ones amongst people who know what you are talking about. They're very creative though, I like them most for that.
 
Sorry to revive this thread, I just bought the serenity DVD after reading about all this hype in here. Now I am hooked, I am planning to get the series, which unfortunately is not available here so I have to get it on amazon. Damm.... I have to wait for a few more weeks...
I have to say, I do not understand a word of chinese the captain was saying :p even though I speak chinese quite fluently.
