Hmm, not sure what there is to HATE about Firefox... really, there's not much difference between the browsers (except features, but Firefox really has more than Safari, so this can't be the problem).

Nope, not here. In fact Safari has never ran so smoothly. Safari 2.x would eat resources and I'd have to restart about every 2 hours or so because the performance would degrade so much.

Safari on Windows XP doesn't work

Anybody have this same experience, opening safari get this error...

Safari Web Browser has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
AppName: safari.exe AppVer: 3.523.12.9 ModName: webkit.dll
ModVer: 3.523.12.9 Offset: 00003c33

and then the app closes

This happened with the first version of safari on windows and I was hoping this time around it would work.

It's not clear what the problem is.

Have you tried a reinstall? Sounds like it could be a broken/corrupted installation. Except for taking about a full minute to launch, Safari 3.0.4 is running nice and dandy on my Windows box (XP).

They probably should've wrapped WebKit in the Windows standard app interface. Would've cut down on a lot of the complaints, I think.

Can you point me out what is this Windows standard interface?

Is this a standard Windows interface (see attached)?

As the IT support staff, it is their responsibility to see that the network keeps running smoothly for the sake of the business, not the users themselves. It is possible the company has an actual "No Firefox" policy. Firefox does allow one to skirt some banned programs, like you can install IRC programs and download managers and such into it and since they run as plug-ins, corporate policies to prevent those types of programs from running would be less effective.

I'm not arguing that Firefox has any impact on network stability or company security, I'm using Firefox at work right now, the point is it's kinda dumb for someone to get upset over what their employer's IT department does to their employer's computer systems. Unless there's some work-related reason you need to use Firefox, their's no reason you need it. Note: This is very similar to basic security hardening of Linux-based OSes; Disable any service that is not explicitly needed for a task.

Being IT is a thankless job. All people do is complain when something goes wrong or when they are not allowed to do certain things but when they spend hours doing like getting a something set up and hours researching possible solutions to a problem or something they are requested to set up all they get is people complaining

Like you said IT job is to the network first. End users come after the network.

It is messing up on Macs too.

It shuts down unexpectedly. It won't load a flash page correctly.

Sort of actng like a Windows program.

Come on, Apple. Get your act together. The reason I switched to a Mac was to get away from having to repair my PC every day.

Now I am forced to use Firefox on my Mac because Safari is screwing up.

Well,

Since I cannot afford the money to buy Leopard, and Safari has been screwed up by the latest upgrade 10.4.11 I am forced to go to a pirate forum and download a copy of Leopard so I can use my Mac and Safari, which I have set up so I can work.

Nice going Apple on an upgrade that messes up Macs.

Are you guys trying to out do MS?

Last time I checked Firefox was usable in OSX, at least it is on the Intel Platform. I've noticed that it is especially slow for PPC, especially for flash.

you aren't kidding, I recently bought a MBP (C2D) to replace my 1.5GHz PowerBook and the difference is night and day. The powerbook's performance couldn't even eclipse that of my old 800MHz PIII that I have kicking around when it came to firefox and flash. It wasn't RAM either as my PB had 2GB of it. I think there something seriously wrong with that. Firefox's flash performance is rather blah on OSX in my opinion, maybe its just me. I must add though it seems much better in Leopard, its still not quite there.

doesn't it just let you do a downgade?

I believe (though I could be mistaken) that it would be possible to reinstall 10.4 and then manually download patches through 10.4.10 via the Apple website.

Still, not exactly an easy process.

Alongside the Mac OS X 10.4.11 updates today, Apple also released a new beta of Safari for Windows as detailed in this tech note.

The latest Safari beta for Windows incorporates a number of stability, performance and security improvements. A number of new features are detailed as well, including:

- Includes an additional font smoothing option ("standard)
- Adds International text input methods
- Adds cookie management
- Adds spell checking and grammar checking
- New keyboard shortcuts

Apple also incorporated Safari 3 with the Mac OS X 10.4.11 update, bringing the final version of Safari 3 to Tiger users. Apple first released Safari for Windows in June at WWDC 2007.

Neat, I'll be sure to install this on my families windows bootcamp installation. The more browsers to choose besides Internet Explorer the better ;) :D

I can finally dump IE7

The original beta version couldn't hack it totally at work.

This version is so much faster. And the little tweaks like getting the spell checker to work, etc mean I can truly stop using IE for some of our web applications like Salesforce.com, etc.

I have some co-workers who swore off of IE for Firefox, but I just haven't wanted to get into that space yet.

Bottom line, I think MS might be done with IE.
