So any information on how to make Safari 4 work with eBay properly? I can't change font sizes, insert pictures or ANYTHING with Safari! In Firefox it works perfectly!

GRRR!!! This was a problem with Safari 3, and it's still a frustration with Safari 4!

Fully Functional Glims

Glims 1b14 is available for download now, just not linked directly on their site yet. All functionality has been restored to Glims using Safari 4 Public Beta.

Is there a way to enable single window mode in safari where all new windows open in tabs?

Also, is there a way to use mouse gestures in safari? Gestures speed up browsing even faster than a better engine, imo.

I've always used firefox, but safari is noticeably faster.

I agree, and this is the one thing holding me back form switching to Safari.

...And I can't use tabs on it, because whenever I hit Command-W to close a tab, it tries to close the entire window -- very annoying. But I still keep trying to use it, cause I like everything else about it, it's well-integrated with the Mac OS and there are many things you can do easily in Safari that you can't in any other browsers.

Very true. I've also had the same situation when using command + w, I'm not sure why but sometimes it doesn't want to close the tab, but the entire window. I haven't really seen this in Safari 4 yet though.

lol... which one? He was mentioning two in his post... :p

I don't know about the mouse gestures because I mostly use my trackpad.

the tabs issue is solved with installing Glims which is a little add-on that runs perfectly with Safari and will give you the Open in New Tabs and Undo Close Tab options, along with plenty of others.

Well spotted.

It's been there stealthily since Sunday evening (GMT) but I didn't think it was right to tell anyone without the ingenuity to find it for themselves!

However, it's up on their site officially now.

It might have been mentioned before, too many pages to read 100 percent, but the way they use 'top sites', I would like a switch to kill off tabs at the top and have them displayed the same way as top sites. I locked my top sites, 12 of them that I go to all the time, but it's the 'base' page. It would be so cool to have my tabs that way. Finish one page, push it back, pull up another but always able to go back. I would love that instead of tabs at the top, bottom or middle.

Not sure if this has been discussed in this Safari 4 thread... but I'd just like to say that I've downloaded the beta and so far I'm quite impressed.

And to those who say browsing history is mindless eye candy are delusional... it is an excellent tool and stops me from leaving windows open 'just in case I want to go back to them'. If I want to go back to that thing I was viewing 10 minutes ago I just click the 'Top Sites' button, the 'Search History' box and scroll back until I recognise the page. MUCH faster than trying to decipher crappy page titles.

Open Terminal.app and type (or paste):

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

and press enter. The $ is there just to signify that it's a terminal command.

After downloading Pointum's "Secret Safari 4 Menu" to get the tweaks there, I followed the above instructions re pasting into Terminal to restore the Blue Progress Bar and.....nothing. Just the meaningless twirly to the right of the URL. Blah!

I am the lowliest of newbies when it comes to using Terminal -- pasting in the above was my first trip to it -- and even after reading all I could find here at MR and Terminal Help, I'm experiencing a distinct sense of failure that the Blue Progress Bar hasn't reappeared. :(

Anyone willing to provide careful step-by-step instructions on how I can either (1) undo the paste I made (if necessary?) or (2) to properly perform a restoration of the Blue Progress Bar?

I don't know what pasting the command into Terminal did, negative or positive, because Safari and Mac seem ok, no problems yet from my less-than-successful attempt.

Thanks!

Remarkably, I stumbled across the answer just a few minutes later at someone's earlier post reproducing all the commands necessary:

"When both set to NO it restores the blue loading bar behind the URL.

$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool NO
$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

By unchecking the Toolbar Redesign option at Safari >> Tweaks (Pointum d/l), that, combined with the pasted Terminal command and a newly-opened Safari window revealed THE RETURN OF THE BLUE PROGRESS BAR.

Huzzah! Amazing how happy the littlest improvements can make one, isn't it? ;)

Safari Help In Safari 4 Is M.i.a. After Tweaks...

D/L'd Safari 4 - no problems

Added the Pointum tweaks and with minor adjustments noted in my other posts in this thread, no problems....until I needed to check Menu bar for info in Help >> Safari Help. Prior to tweaks Safari Help was most definitely available, now it's greyed out.

Ideas, anyone?

Thanks!

It was cmd+click and odd that's missing now.

Cmd+click window title is standard OS X feature most notably in Finder and Safari (up to v4).

This is funny, i was trying that experience as i was reading that, opened new tab, and went bbc just cos its easy to remember.. I couldnt get my mouse there fast enough!! :D

With apologies, here is a long-overdue update on this issue.

I wrote the Pointum developer, Max, and as before, he responded quickly with a fix to the greyed-out Safari Help menu. Anyone downloading his tweaks to Safari 4 now will be able to customise Safari to get the best of the old and new browser: speed, beauty, and functionality!

One major issue in Safari 4 renders it almost useless, for me. I'm not sure if this feature was in Safari 3.

When I right click to open a context menu, I usually want to click "Back". It's just how I've always operated with browsers. In Safari, when I right click I will almost always get a context menu with "Search in Spotlight" selected, and no way to go "Back". Even when there is no text selected, Safari manages to select something (often a space or a dash, sometimes a word) and asks me if I want to search for that in Spotlight.

Has anyone else seen this and if so found a way to resolve it?

If you click around text, Safari will select some of it and offer the option to search with Spotlight or Google. But if you click on an area with no text, you'll get the Back option on the menu.
