I am using it now and am LOVING it. The predictive loading is amazing, it makes Safari super super amazingly-awesome SNAPPY! :D

And good idea and thanks to Arn and Rewozz for posting those. I know probably 1/4 of the 1000-some-odd posts on the main thread are:
"OMG, I want the progress bar"
"OMG, why the $#%& are the tabs up top?"

Good to have the instructions in one place everyone can see instead of spaced out amongst pages 3, 5, 7, 9, 13, 14, 15, 17... 35:rolleyes:... of the other thread :p

I am very happy with Safari 4 -- great performance.

The tabs on top drove me crazy though, just because I couldn't double-click on an empty tab space to create a new tab (I do this all the time). For some reason, moving the mouse alllll the way to that + really irritated me :)

So now I "tweaked" to get the tabs back on the bottom... ahhh precious empty tab space I can double-click!

Is there a way to have the bookmarks on the side of the window and not in the bar up top?

Hmm, I also encountered the mail-crash problem! Though the error message mentioned it might have to do with GrowMail plugin as source of the problem. Don't want to revert to the old Safari though!

Mail app also crashing on me, frustrating. I don't have any plugins installed. Hopefully Apple will issue an update quickly.

Hmm, some more unrelated things are happening. Mail is crashing, but also I have some third-party menu bar stuff (menumeters) which won't work when Safari 4 is installed.. :/

That's because growl plugin doesn't play well with Safari 4 yet. To fix this you have to remove the Growl plugin (for now at least) from Mail

Library/mail/bundles folder ----- remove growl

this should fix your mail crashing problem

Worked perfect for me !

You dont have to remove it, just untick it in Mail prefs....

The instructions page is down, here are the commands:

Code:
 # http://swedishcampground.com/safari-4-hidden-preferences

Having a quick poke through the new Safari binary yields the following strings:

  $ strings /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari | grep DebugSafari4
  DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop
  DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign
  DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList
  DebugSafari4IncludeGoogleSuggest
  DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle
  DebugSafari4IncludeFlowViewInBookmarksView
  DebugSafari4TopSitesZoomToPageAnimationDimsSnapshot
  DebugSafari4IncludeTopSites

*NB: Need to restart Safari after changing any of these.*

## DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop

This moves the tab bar back where you expect it to be:

  $ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool NO

## DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign and DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle

When both set to NO it restores the blue loading bar behind the URL.

  $ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool NO
  $ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

## DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList

Switches off the new URL autocomplete menu and goes back to the original one.

  $ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList -bool NO

## DebugSafari4IncludeGoogleSuggest

Turns off the new Google suggest menu.

  $ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeGoogleSuggest -bool NO

## DebugSafari4IncludeFlowViewInBookmarksView

Unknown.

## DebugSafari4TopSitesZoomToPageAnimationDimsSnapshot

Unknown.

## DebugSafari4IncludeTopSites

Disables Top Sites feature completely.

  $ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeTopSites -bool NO

## Undoing changes

Just run the defaults command with the `delete` flag for the appropriate key you wish to delete.

  $ defaults delete com.apple.Safari <key>

I'm sorry about this newbie question, but I'm not used with terminal commands..

To make back progress bar come back, I juste open terminal.app and type this ??

$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

is that it??

Thanks and sorry :)

Mail Continually Crashing

Hmm, I also encountered the mail-crash problem! Though the error message mentioned it might have to do with GrowMail plugin as source of the problem. Don't want to revert to the old Safari though!

HI,

My Mail keeps unexpectedly quitting (18 times now) since I installed safari 4 this morning!!.....and I dont have Growl installed.

Hopefully apple will sort this quickly as I love the changes they have made.

Did anyone else have problems with their Mail.app crashing after you installed it? I had to uninstall the beta and then mail went back to normal... Anyone?

i had some stability problems with mail aswell, but not as bad as you experienced. it just took twice the time to close it properly.

Google Apps for Your Domain email does not work using Safari 4.
This stinks because I also have a Fluid App created for GAFYD which is now unusable. I guess I'll have to use Mail.app or Firefox for now.

Apple, we need SAFARI PLUG-INS!!!! That would be a Firefox killer for me! PLUG-INS BABY!!! :p

Firefox killer for me is if Safari adds the options to "Save your Tabs" when you close the program. Or, it restores them if the program crashes accidentally. I cant live without that feature.

At first I didn't like the tabs on top, but after a day of using Safari 4 I've gotten used to them and appreciate the benefits.

You could always just customize the toolbar add a button to make a new tab, put it anywhere ya want on the toolbar...
;)

I ran into the same problem with Mail and the Growl plugin and reverted to Safari 3.

I also did not experience any improved performance with Safari 4. Everything was as slow or as fast as it was with Safari 3.

What I found a bit annoying was that the "top pages" thing initializes to a lot of crap pre-configured by Apple: CNN, FaceBook, YouTube, and what the heck else. There also is no option to manually add pages to the "top pages" page; you have to navigate to a website at least twice to have it appear there, probably more often when you've been using Safari 4 for a longer time. There should be an "add to top pages" button somewhere, and it should initialize with the "favorites" list if there is one -- because, let's face it, "top pages" is nothing else than an "automagically" updates bookmark list.

Ignoring the Tabs being in the wrong place in the first place - where is the 'stop' button. And frankly, S4 is just damn slower to use than S3. Cover flow history? Apple's getting itself over excited about a feature that should NEVER have happened before better core browser performance.

I've gone back to 3.

Remove the $ and space from the beginning, so it starts with defaults. That's to indicate the command prompt and the fact that there's a new line, in case a command wraps to more than one line.

The tabs will take some getting used to (still feels wrong), but I think the advantages of it being up top will make it worth toughing out the newness.

The odd design choice that is bothering me is that there are no reload or stop loading buttons anymore.

One thing I miss from version 3.0

You used to be able to right-click on the title bar and it would let you get to any site's main page from there. I did that all the time, now it's gone. Wish they could bring it back... maybe right-click on the address bar or something.

Nope, I hope Apple keeps them at the top and there's no way to change them on the final version. Having the tabs at the bottom of the address bar took up browsing space, I'm very happy to have them at the top.
Wow, how arrogant. Just because Apple made a change you like, everyone has to love it? I don't hope they remove the option, because that would be a reason for me to switch to Firefox at last. Forcing users to a specific behaviour is a really bad decision. The choice of your browser is very important, because many people use it every day and each have their own taste. There is no reason why Apple should remove it if it's already implemented.

I'm used to tabs below the address bar for years, it's just not so logical for me when they're on the top now. Another thing is, that I now accidently move my entire window. :(

I think the Dollar sign at the beginning isn't necessary. But this function doesn't have a effect on my browser. :(
