another plus for Safari 4

I couldn't open the hidden preferences link on IE7 (three tries) but it opened right away in Safari 4.

You used to be able to right-click on the title bar and it would let you get to any site's main page from there. I did that all the time, now it's gone. Wish they could bring it back... maybe right-click on the address bar or something.

It was cmd+click and odd that's missing now.

Cmd+click window title is standard OS X feature most notably in Finder and Safari (up to v4).

Firefox killer for me is if Safari adds the options to "Save your Tabs" when you close the program. Or, it restores them if the program crashes accidentally. I cant live without that feature.

I think even more important is the custom keyword searches. If they'd integrate that, I'd be in heaven!

Nope, I hope Apple keeps them at the top and there's no way to change them on the final version. Having the tabs at the bottom of the address bar took up browsing space, I'm very happy to have them at the top.

Wait, so you want your preference imposed onto people who don't like it? Charming, I'm glad you don't write software.

Odd the removal of the page loading progress bar, hopefully it will be re-added without having to use a command line hack.

The refresh/stop button is the same as the iPhone now, but the iPhone keeps the page loading progress bar.

safari 4 locked up my computer and totally was unusable.

i'm on a PPC G5 with less than 2 gigs of RAM.

looks like you need a really beefy machine just to surf the net with the new safari.

**sadly goes back to old browsers

Not really. I got two Mac's. A 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook with 4Gb RAM and a PPC Mac Mini 1.42GHz with 1Gb RAM.

There wasn't too much of a difference on the MacBook between Safari 3 and Safari 4 Beta. But there is a big difference on the Mac Mini between 3 and 4 Beta.

It does run on weaker hardware as my Mac Mini (Leopard) is weaker than your G5. The Beta runs smooth.

Killing mail.app was not cool. Even if Growl is the problem, does nobody on their dev team use that combination? Still, easily solvable, though removing Growl reduces the functionality that specifically I bought a Mac to get.

What really kills Safari 4 for me is the same thing missing in prior versions: I need the same functionality I get with FF3 using Adblock Plus with the Element Hiding Helper, plus Flashblock. I don't care if Apple puts those in natively or if they do it with Plug Ins, but I need those tools to take back the web and make it usable. Frankly I need this for Safari for the iPhone as well (though Apple has done a nice job of keeping Flash off that platform, for which I'm eternal grateful!)

Ooh good catch. That is a shame. That works in Finder too.

Also, am I the only one that doesn't use tabs? I used to, but then I stopped using them in any app when I realized it was limiting the usefulness of Exposé. I don't really get the advantage anyway. I guess "screen clutter" just doesn't bother me, same reason I don't use Spaces.

Already does. See if you can find it ;)

running safari 4b alongside safari 3..is it possible?

Does installing safari 4b install on top of safari 3 or it runs as a separate program, and not affecting it? I want to have the option of still being able to use safari 3 just in case.

This has always worked great for me...

http://safariadblock.sourceforge.net/

Just don't use it on this site :)

Thats cause it still works (on the beta too)

That app hasn't been updated for a year now. I wonder how long it will take till it's outdated (if it's not already).

And it seems to be using updated lists, so what do you need updated?

haven't tried it yet, BUT:

1. it better not break SWFAddress.
2. i seriously hope they changed that stupid downloads window method... having to close that thing after every download and having no option to auto-close is retarded.

How do you restore the tabs on top... I'll try to get used to it. Let me know what the command is please..

Beware the beta! In Windows, it kept a Zombie process open that consumed 99% of my resources. It was locking up Outlook and Firefox until I killed it.

For me it is a must have feature as well (usually I have tens of tabs open and if I need to restart, there is a crash, or to install a plugin). Fortunately SafariStand works with Safari 4 and the browser is FAST (Safari 3 was having some serious beach ball issues). http://hetima.com/safari/stand-e.html

I think the Dollar sign at the beginning isn't necessary. But this function doesn't have a effect on my browser. :(
Huh???

The dollar sign is at the end of your command prompt. Its not something you type, its part of the prompt that shows you the terminal is ready to accept a command. Just using "$" is a kind of shorthand, since your prompt will look different from everyone else's (since your computer shortname and directories are different from everyone elses).

Link to an introduction to using terminal on OS X. And a link to a handful of useful OS X defaults you can set (or "unset") from terminal, to get you started. Have fun!

Working fine for me.

I just figured out the issue. GAFYD does not work under Safari 4 when using SSL. I had to use a different browser, change "Always use https" to "Don't always use https" and now it works. And of course, type in the url with http.

I'm sure you can duplicate the SSL issue. I always run under SSL whenever possible, so this is a drag. But it IS beta, so...

used it since release, uninstalled it just a few minutes ago. It was noticeably slower, and now previous version works just fine. Any ideas?
